Deadrunner
A pirate who has crossed the line that the king's marshals draw between ransom and slaughter. Ordinary pirates of Tress's world rob but do not kill — surrender and pay and the chase is over, and if you are caught the king imprisons you rather than hangs you. A crew that kills the people aboard a ship it takes — or scuttles the ship with the crew aboard — becomes a deadrunner instead: hanged on capture, refused crew by other ports, hated even by other pirates.
