Fort's Board
The flat black-faced board through which Fort talks to the hearing world. Speech in his vicinity prints onto the front as text, with a mark before each new speaker; the back is a keyboard he can tap with his knuckles, that anticipates his words at supernatural speed. The narrator, in an aside the reader is not meant to share with Fort, identifies the device as Nalthian craftsmanship with Awakened Connection circuits, and admits he is curious about which wizard-from-the-stars actually traded it away. Known facts
- nalthian-originAcquired by Fort from a "wizard from beyond the stars" some years ago in exchange for a hard-fought trade. Fort uses it to leave the inaccuracies of lip-reading behind; the narrator, in an aside, recognises it as Nalthian craft — Awakened predictive Connection circuits — and admits he is curious which off-worlder parted with it.STD:Tress:Ch 14
- snapped-in-half-by-captain-crowCrow walks over to Fort's magical writing board after the fight and snaps it in half under her heel. Fort cries out — the only sound the narrator has ever heard him make other than a laugh — and slumps weeping with bloody hands to bloody face.STD:Tress:Ch 49
- replacement-board-scrolls-text-and-supports-different-fontsThe replacement writing board Xisis supplies as one of Tress's boons improves on the original: rather than requiring Fort to wipe and restart, lines of text scroll past — old lines disappear at the top as new ones appear at the bottom — so he can keep typing in something approximating real time. It also supports different fonts.STD:Tress:Ch 53
