Aanden
also known as Baron Aanden, Aanden
The man behind the Aanden mask, as Raoden recognises him from a distance through the Shaod's ruin: not a baron at all but one of Kae's finest sculptors before the change took him. The decade in Elantris has reduced him to incoherent blubbering over a court of similarly broken Elantrians. EL:EL:Ch 10
Self-styled monarch of Elantris, holding court in the university section. Claims to have been a baron before the Shaod took him, though Raoden — who would have known any baron — does not recognise the name. Notorious for whim-judgments and for feeding his followers on boiled vellum from the university's older scrolls. EL:EL:Ch 4 superseded at EL:EL:Ch 10
Known facts
- actually-taan-the-sculptorSpying on his court, Raoden recognises Aanden — despite the Shaod's distortion — as the Kae sculptor Taan. The "baron" title is invented; the fake mustache is, even more obviously, fake.EL:EL:Ch 10
- drops-aanden-mask-pledges-to-spiritCalled by his real name and shown what Elantris really is — a city of sculpture, with masters' reliefs hidden under the Reod sludge in every wall — Taan tears off his Aanden mustache, lays down his axe, and orders his men to do likewise. He pledges himself and his university gang to Raoden's band on the spot.EL:EL:Ch 16
Events
- EL:EL:Ch 10 The face behind the false baron's mustache — recognised by Raoden even through the Shaod's distortion.
- EL:EL:Ch 16 Enters axe-raised over the support pillar; loses his fake mustache and his pretend barony when Raoden shows him the carvings under the slime.
- EL:EL:Ch 19 Kneels at a low wall in the chapel area, absorbed in cataloguing the carvings — by his own count he has identified more than ten new techniques in the week since joining. Roughly a third of his former followers have crossed to Raoden; he leaves administration to Karata.
- EL:EL:Ch 41 Sits in the street whittling a small stone horse with one of Sarene's bent nails, a knot of children clustered around for the finished piece.
- EL:EL:Ch 10 Holds court from a gold throne over a sickly retinue, blubbering at them incoherently.
