The Shaod
also known as The Transformation
The Transformation that once made an ordinary person into one of the Elantrians. It strikes without warning, usually at night, and is said to take beggar, craftsman, noble, or warrior with equal indifference. EL:EL:Prologue
Known facts
- now-curses-instead-of-blessesSince the Reod the Shaod no longer transforms people into silver-skinned gods but into hairless, splotch-skinned half-living things. The taken are cast through the gates of Elantris by the priests and the guards of Arelon keep them in.EL:EL:Ch 1
- bound-to-arelene-land-and-aonic-bloodRaoden gathers, while arguing with Galladon, that the Shaod takes only people of Aonic descent living in or beside Arelon: native Arelenes, the occasional Teo who has settled there, and a few northern Dulas from the border, but never a Fjordell no matter how long he stays. The taking, AonDor, and the Dor all appear to be tied to this same patch of land and bloodline.EL:EL:Ch 19
- unfinished-transformationRaoden's working theory after weeks of AonDor practice and a study of a botched Aon Ien healing: the Shaod is not death but a halted transformation. The Dor begins to remake the body and is blocked partway through — leaving the blotched skin, the hair that does not regrow, and the wounds that never heal because the body believes no time is passing.EL:EL:Ch 25
