Karata
Leader of the gang that holds the palace section of Elantris. A stern, careful woman who takes the food of newcomers personally but rarely hurts them; she has been caught three times in Kae near King Iadon's palace, and a fourth attempt would see her burned. EL:EL:Ch 4
Known facts
- pledges-loyalty-to-raodenOnce Raoden holds his end of their bargain — and once she has recognised him as the prince she used to guard — Karata folds her gang into his band. She had served Iadon from inside the palace as a guardsman's wife for twelve years; now she serves Iadon's son, by her telling, because of who he is rather than in spite of it.EL:EL:Ch 13
- protects-the-children-of-elantrisKarata's entire faction exists to protect the children the Shaod casts into Elantris — every one of her people left a child of their own outside. The kept ones play in a guarded room deep in the Elantrian palace; a separate room holds those who have already broken.EL:EL:Ch 13
- extracts-staples-not-weaponsAsked for her bribe, Karata dictates not weapons or coin but a long, sober list of cloth, grain, worked-metal sheets, wood, straw, and oil — the basic stock the city has been starved of. The exchange establishes, for Sarene as much as the chapter, that rule of Elantris turns on controlling necessities, not violence.EL:EL:Ch 23
- acts-as-regent-of-new-elantrisWhen Raoden leaves Elantris under his Kaloo illusion to work on the Arelene succession from outside the walls, he hands New Elantris over to Karata to keep running in his absence — the first time the community has had a leader other than him since he founded it.EL:EL:Ch 52
- diesThrows herself unarmed at a squad of six Fjordell soldiers on the southern road, alongside Galladon, to buy Raoden the seconds he needs to close his line in the dirt. Beheaded by a sword stroke moments before the Dor erupts from the Chasm line she died to let him draw.EL:EL:Ch 61
Events

- EL:EL:Ch 13 Rides the river out with Raoden, leads the silent crawl through Kae's streets, and slips into the barracks to lay a necklace and a note beside her sleeping daughter.
- EL:EL:Ch 13 Leads Raoden through the old palace into the children's room, explains why her gang exists, and pledges her loyalty.
- EL:EL:Ch 16 Furious and helpless after Dashe walks out with her men; guides Raoden by a side route to the rigged building.
- EL:EL:Ch 19 Sprints into the chapel area, sludge-tracked, after hearing of the raid and is annoyed to have missed it; reports that the relocation of her people from the palace is underway and falls into line with Raoden before returning to the palace.
- EL:EL:Ch 23 Stands beside Mareshe-as-Aanden on a heap of broken furniture, plays the firm half of the act, dictates the supply list, and gives Sarene her word that no Elantrian will be barred from the cart.
- EL:EL:Ch 23 Holds back laughter at Mareshe's preening and confirms to Raoden that they have given Sarene exactly the city she expected to see.
- EL:EL:Ch 25 Sits outside the Hall efficiently stitching the gash in Saolin's sword arm — a skill she picked up nursing for a mercenary company.
- EL:EL:Ch 25 Holds the lantern through the shrine and library, opens the inner door with Aon Tae, and warns Raoden back from the pool's edge when its pull starts to take him.
- EL:EL:Ch 31 Carries a sack into Shaor's bank as part of Raoden's seed-corn gambit.
- EL:EL:Ch 34 Karata sits in on the AonDor lesson and presses Raoden on the seon-Passing question — what happens if no master is named?
- EL:EL:Ch 37 Karata tells Raoden he was glowing as he convulsed — light like an Aon's.
- EL:EL:Ch 60 Helps Galladon lift the Hoed Raoden and starts the climb up the mountainside toward the pool to give him peace.
- EL:EL:Ch 60 Stands with Galladon above the pool when Raoden suddenly twists out of their hold and falls in.
- EL:EL:Ch 61 Beside Galladon at the pool's edge when Raoden surfaces.
- EL:EL:Ch 61 Throws herself unarmed at the Fjordell patrol to buy Raoden seconds and is beheaded a few yards from the line he is dragging shut.
