The Farmer
The local Shin ruler-by-vocation — one of those who *add* — addressed as *colors-nimi* and dressed in full color (violet outer robe, sky-blue inner) over the dirty work clothes that mark his nobility. Kindly oval face, flaxen hair, calluses and dirt under the nails. He governs by trying, seeing, acting; he sees Szeth at his cookpot and asks him to come dance for the farmers in the fields. Patron of Szeth's family homestead and overseer of the soldiers defending the coast from stonewalker raiders. SA:WaT:Ch 36
Known facts
- teaches-szeth-volition-as-the-mark-of-humanityThe Farmer tells the boy Szeth that the spren move most things in the world — rain, rolling rocks — but they do not move people. The defining difference between men and animals is that *men can take actions*; the right course is not known in advance but found by trying. The Stone Shamans teach the reason for this, and he ponders it as he works.SA:WaT:Ch 36
Events
- SA:WaT:Ch 48 Comes to the homestead the evening after Szeth kills the soldier; takes the entire blame, refuses to call the boy broken, invokes the Stone Shamans' doctrine and the old Radiant *watchers at the rim* to ask that Szeth be sent for training.
- SA:WaT:Ch 68 Carried into the office on his ritual mat; offers Szeth a quiet shepherding post at a high pass before the Voice overrules him.
