The Voice
also known as the Voice
A disembodied speaker that appears in young Szeth's head during his first hours at the Shin soldier camp. Of indeterminate pitch — Szeth cannot tell whether it sounds male or female — it claims to be the *spren of the stone* he discovered as a child and to have watched over his family for years. It coaches him through Betheth's recruit assessment and asks that he tell no one of it. SA:WaT:Ch 51
Known facts
- bonded-only-to-people-of-shin-landThe Voice tells Szeth that it can speak only into the minds of those of his land — it cannot whisper into the surviving stonewalker captain. Asked to try regardless, it says only *perhaps there is something I can do.*SA:WaT:Ch 59
- encourages-the-practice-of-oathstonesThe Voice claims to have actively encouraged the Shin practice of Oathstones — the small sacred stones used to bind a condemned soldier into service. *I approve of oaths. Unbreakable, binding your will to the people you serve.*SA:WaT:Ch 59
- speaks-to-honorbearersThe Voice speaks not just to Szeth but to every Shin Honorbearer — it is whose service they actually owe, and it can override the Farmer's rulings whenever it cares to. To a layperson chosen by it before becoming an acolyte or shaman is *very rare*.SA:WaT:Ch 68
Events
- SA:WaT:Ch 51 Speaks in Szeth's head for the first time as he hands over his colour kerchief, then walks him through Betheth's test line by line.
- SA:WaT:Ch 57 Speaks in Szeth's head throughout the day — telling him to hit Jormo hard, refusing to answer plainly whether he should obey Szrand, and observing later that Szeth is *not impossibly timid* after all. Asks whether Szeth would like to hold an Honorblade — *the time is not right; perhaps it never will be.*
- SA:WaT:Ch 59 Talks Szeth through every beat of the raid trap, restores him from a gut wound on the enemy deck, supplies the foreign words that frame him as a Stormrider, and tells him the truly capable raiders of the world live not here but in Azir.
- SA:WaT:Ch 68 Breaks its long silence to override the Farmer's gentle posting and order the Honorbearers to take Szeth into a monastery.
- SA:WaT:Ch 75 Speaks to Szeth in the rock garden, claiming credit for orchestrating his life and warning him the next stretch will be hard.
