A large black portfolio tied with a cord, kept hidden at the bottom of Painter's painting trunk and forbidden to anyone else's touch. Inside are dozens of his old masterpieces in ink — streets that seem to come alive, faces with glittering eyes, towering architecture, intricate flowers — every piece in a different mode and far beyond what he now produces.
