Nikaro
also known as Nikaro Yoji, Painter
A nineteen-year-old nightmare painter working the night shift in Kilahito. Lanky, with shoulder-length hair he believes is effortlessly impressive (and is in fact neither). Lives in a single-room apartment provided by his employer, prefers to walk his beat alone, and quietly cultivates the self-image of a solitary hunter of the dark — though he also goes by his title rather than his birth name, internalising the role more thoroughly than most of his colleagues. STD:YNP:Ch 1
Known facts
- goes-by-titleBorn Nikaro and styled Nikaro Yoji by his parents, he goes almost exclusively by his professional title — Painter — to anyone but his fellow nightmare painters. The tradition exists; few internalise it as completely as he has.STD:YNP:Ch 1
- works-aloneWalks his perimeter beat alone by choice, cultivating an image of the lone hunter against the shroud. Privately wishes that one of his colleagues would invite him along anyway, so that he could turn them down.STD:YNP:Ch 1
- bamboo-defaultDefaults to painting bamboo for every nightmare he meets — a single-stroke flourish-and-line he has practised to mechanical precision — regardless of what shape the nightmare actually resembles. It is efficient, which is what matters to him these days.STD:YNP:Ch 3
- paints-mother-to-drive-off-stable-nightmareCornered by a near-stable nightmare feeding on a child in Kilahito's outer tenements, he abandons his default bamboo, breaks the standing warning against painting nightmares as people, and paints the child's mother from a glimpse of her face. The strokes frighten the horror enough that it flees rather than risk being bound into a passive shape — the first time he has driven off something he had no business engaging.STD:YNP:Ch 7
- arrives-in-yumis-bodyHe blacks out in his apartment in Kilahito and wakes in Yumi's wagon on Torio — wearing her formal sleeping dress, perceived by everyone around him as her, and able somehow to read and speak the local language without effort. Yumi is present beside him as an incorporeal ghost only he can see.STD:YNP:Ch 8
- claims-to-be-a-heroAsked by Yumi whether he is a great warrior of his people, sent by the spirits to help her — and given a long beat to think about it — he agrees, telling her he is among the greatest of his kind, and accepts the role of the hero the spirits supposedly sent.STD:YNP:Ch 9
- connection-carries-emotionA second touch with Yumi in the spring confirms that the Connection between them carries more than the initial hion-line jolt — it bleeds emotion across, each tasting the other's fear, embarrassment, shame, and the deeper sense that something is wrong and neither knows how to fix it.STD:YNP:Ch 10
- swap-flips-on-sleepWhen he passes out from the heat at the end of the bath ritual, he wakes in his own apartment in Kilahito with Yumi beside him — now in his pajamas and able to interact with his furniture, while he is the one whose hand passes through a sock and a table. The trade between them flips at sleep.STD:YNP:Ch 10
- chooses-to-be-the-heroAsked again by Yumi whether he can help her free the trapped spirits, he drops the loner-warrior pose and answers from somewhere closer to himself — that whatever she needs, he will do it. He thinks of himself as a ruined canvas tossed in the trash and seizes the chance to start a new drawing on the back.STD:YNP:Ch 10
- admits-not-a-heroConfronted by Yumi after Akane ridicules him, he admits he is a capable nightmare painter but no hero — that he heard Yumi ask for one and let her keep assuming.STD:YNP:Ch 11
- met-akane-in-schoolMet Akane in painter school three years before the story; she was kind to him when other classmates made fun of his small-town background, asking him what had drawn him to paint nightmares.STD:YNP:Ch 15
- school-clique-included-tojin-masaka-izzyWas part of a five-person school clique with Akane, Tojin, Masaka, and Izzy — a group he was eventually dropped from and has spent years yearning to be invited back to, only to discover when he finally rejoins them invisibly that the longing was for something he had lost rather than for them as they are.STD:YNP:Ch 16
- ghost-can-trigger-hion-devicesDiscovers that although his ghost-form cannot grip ordinary objects, he can make a small zap of light spring from his fingertip and switch a hion viewer on and off — apparently because he can feel the hion lines themselves and tweak them.STD:YNP:Ch 17
- defines-art-as-feeling-not-precisionTells Yumi at the place of ritual that art is about feeling, not precision — about letting emotion out so it can be shared, about capturing a truth in oneself by tearing a hole in one's chest and exposing the soul. She dismisses this as pretty words; the disagreement frames their whole training.STD:YNP:Ch 18
- ghost-can-pull-clothing-soulsOn Yumi's suggestion, learns that his ghost-form can grab the *soul* of an item of clothing — a copy of it — by clearing his mind and reaching for one specific piece. The pulled-out souls hold for a while and then dissolve back to the original; he uses the trick to wear something other than the pyjamas he otherwise has on permanently.STD:YNP:Ch 19
- suspended-without-pay-by-foremanReceives a letter from Foreman Sukishi relieving him of duty for a month without pay as punishment for lying about his work — described to the other painters as medical leave, so as not to publicly shame him on his first offence. A second offence, or sustained failure to do his rounds, would cost him the apartment.STD:YNP:Ch 19
- keeps-locked-black-portfolioKeeps a large black portfolio tied with a cord at the bottom of his painting trunk, which he forbids Yumi to touch — *ever*, on his rules, with no explanation offered. His snap to stop her reaching for it is sharper than any he has given her so far.STD:YNP:Ch 19
- bamboo-is-his-rote-shortcutTeaches Yumi bamboo as the first form because it can be memorised as a pattern and reproduced with minimal effort — the technique uses the natural way ink runs down the brush to dark-light-dark a stalk almost without thinking. It is, plainly, why he submits bamboo for every nightmare.STD:YNP:Ch 19
- recognises-shared-passion-with-yumiWatching Yumi build a tower of ten stones in flowing, scooping motions, Painter realises her passion for stacking is the same passion he himself once felt — and that the loneliness-in-a-group, the shame, and the whispered fear of not being worthy of attention that he assumed were uniquely his are, in her, exactly recognisable. Without touching her, he understands.STD:YNP:Ch 20
- meditates-best-while-paintingPainter tells Yumi that the closest he comes to a quiet mind is while painting, and proves it at the orchard shrine by filling an hour-long scroll with quick-stroke faces and bamboo. Yumi grants that the rhythm of her bamboo practice has felt the same.STD:YNP:Ch 22
- draws-first-spirit-with-twelve-stackDuring the village demonstration, Painter finishes a stack of twelve, feels a tug on his Connection to the land, and a glowing spirit surfaces from the stone midway between him and the machine — Yumi judges he and the machine drew it together, the spirit ultimately drifting to the scholars.STD:YNP:Ch 24
- suspended-beat-likely-unstaffedPainter's suspension has not been backfilled. Foreman Sukishi presumed his quiet beat was either covered by others' overlapping patrols or one nightmares rarely visited; the bare-corner smoke trails Painter and Yumi find suggest the stable nightmare has had free run of the perimeter for over two weeks.STD:YNP:Ch 25
- confesses-bamboo-only-rutOn the fire escape Painter confesses to Yumi that he settled into a rut after school — painting only bamboo, the cheapest serviceable banishment — because real-world art is hard to do on schedule and bamboo works on the nightmares regardless of inspiration. Foreman Sukishi has read the rut as slacking; Painter insists no one ever got hurt on his beat.STD:YNP:Ch 25
- ghost-form-can-get-headachesAfter the nightmare feeds on him on the fire escape, Painter discovers that his ghost form can develop a pounding headache — the kind of detail he never expected of a body that does not breathe or eat.STD:YNP:Ch 26
- accepts-old-friends-finally-goneWalking behind Akane toward the noodle house intervention, Painter privately accepts that any hope of reconciling with his school clique is dead — and finds something close to relief in watching that door close for good.STD:YNP:Ch 26
- lied-an-entire-year-about-dreamwatch-acceptanceA year into upper school Nikaro auditioned for the Dreamwatch and was rejected — *poor style, bad grasp of perspective* — but told his school clique he had been accepted, then sustained the lie for an entire year. He spent the supposed training half-days sitting in the library, not reading, not studying, just staring at the wall; the friends only realised when they noticed he had never introduced them to any other recruits and confirmed it with the school administration.STD:YNP:Ch 27
- was-most-talented-artist-his-clique-had-ever-metAkane tells Yumi that her brother is the single most talented artist she has ever known: a child who had been painting since he could hold a brush, who dedicated his life to getting into the school, in contrast to the rest of the clique who showed up on a whim and were selected on aptitude. They believed his Dreamwatch story partly because his acceptance had seemed inevitable.STD:YNP:Ch 27
- parents-disapproved-of-low-class-painter-careerNikaro's parents hated that he wanted to be a painter — a low-class job in their view — and refused to celebrate the only thing he had ever wanted, which was ink and a page. Meeting Akane's clique at school was the first time anyone had ever been excited by what he could do.STD:YNP:Ch 27
- only-creates-when-there-is-an-audiencePainter admits to Yumi that he is not the kind of artist who creates for himself in the dark — once he found an audience in Akane and the others, painting only mattered when he could show it to them. Losing that audience is why the portfolio went into the trunk and stayed there.STD:YNP:Ch 27
- near-touch-of-yumi-sparks-magenta-and-azure-hionAt the top of the Jotun Line, Painter moves his hand an inch closer to Yumi's on the safety bar and feels a thrum of electric warmth where they almost touch. The narrator notes that two faint sparks — one magenta, one azure — briefly connect their skin: the same colours that had spun out of him when the nightmare fed on him.STD:YNP:Ch 28
- last-truly-happy-memory-was-upper-school-birthdayAsked on the Jotun Line when he was last truly happy, Painter dates it precisely: his birthday in the first year of upper school, about a month before the Dreamwatch test — a party with his clique and his old paintings, where Masaka gave him a black helmet with spikes for a birthday hat. Years ago now.STD:YNP:Ch 28
- can-manifest-paintbrush-of-essenceCornered between the stable nightmare and a downed Tojin, Painter thrusts out his hand and a large paintbrush bursts from his essence as if formed of silver light. He afterwards has no idea how he did it — but the brush feels as natural to him as his own heart, and the phantom ink he draws with it reshapes the nightmare itself.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- embrace-mingles-essences-and-shares-heatPainter's arms close around Yumi where she is freezing to death of essence-loss, and their two selves mash into one. Heat detonates inside her — the same warmth the half-touch on the Jotun Line only hinted at — pulling her back from the cold, leaving them both trembling and slick with sweat when he lets her go.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- ghost-form-can-feel-drowsy-after-soul-strainFor the first time since the swap, Painter feels properly tired in ghost form — a hollow, sleep-deprived fatigue left behind by the nightmare draining him and by his embrace mingling essences with Yumi. He thinks it will pass.STD:YNP:Ch 30
- realises-bitterness-painted-old-friends-too-darklyWatching the clique fuss over Yumi after the stable nightmare, Painter concedes he has been describing his old friends to her too uncharitably — that his bitterness about the Dreamwatch lie has been a mould on the painting of who they actually are, and he can quietly choose to be their friend in secret if he can let it go.STD:YNP:Ch 30
- can-mirror-yumi-stacking-after-thirty-days-trainingThirty days of stacking practice are not enough to make Painter a yoki-hijo, but they are enough that if Yumi places each stone's *spirit* first, he can lay the real stone over it perfectly — the way an art student imitates a master before finding his own style. With this trick the two of them stack at a height and pace far beyond anything he could manage alone.STD:YNP:Ch 31
- people-called-descendant-of-the-nomads-by-the-nightmaresThe lead-scholar nightmare addresses Painter as *the descendant of the nomads* and notes his people have done well for themselves — implying Painter's nation is the surviving line of a people who once fled across this same land that now lies under the shroud.STD:YNP:Ch 34
- snapped-back-into-his-body-when-machine-broke-the-connectionWhen the scholars throw a switch on the machine, the Connection to Yumi *breaks* with a distinct snap and Painter is hurled across the dark, through a blur of hion lines and buildings, and slams back into his own body in his apartment for the first time in weeks — covered in sweat, alone, with Yumi nowhere in sight.STD:YNP:Ch 34
- cannot-push-back-shroud-without-yumi-connectionBack in his own body, Painter stacks neatly twelve high in front of the shroud and the dark does not so much as twitch. He is forced to concede: being a yoki-hijo is not the technique of stacking but the power the spirits had given her. He could only call spirits, and only push back the shroud, while Connected to her.STD:YNP:Ch 35
- realises-dreamwatch-was-never-accessible-to-himHikiri tells Painter that the Dreamwatch is appointment, not promotion — names the three members in the lounge by family connection — and Painter grasps that he and his friends never had a chance no matter how hard they trained. The shame of his teenage failure is partly absolved and partly redirected.STD:YNP:Ch 37
- paints-nightmares-as-the-people-they-once-wereFacing Liyun's nightmare in the line outside Kilahito, Painter discovers what the painters have never been told: paint a nightmare not as a harmless bird or cat but as the human being it actually is, and it stays. The trapped person, eager to be themselves again, helps him paint the details. One by one he restores roughly a hundred Torish villagers — Liyun and Hwanji among them — to their own bodies.STD:YNP:Ch 40
- completes-the-masterpiece-and-paints-yumi-backWith the shroud unravelling overhead, Painter walks to the blank wall he had left unfinished and paints a young woman on the branch of a flying tree, sun blazing behind her. He paints from the last wisps of the dying shroud as if it were ink. The painting is recognised, even by those who find them later, as a masterpiece of incredible caliber — the masterwork he had spent his life avoiding.STD:YNP:Epilogue
Events
- STD:YNP:Ch 9 Present in Yumi's wagon in her body for the entire chapter — seen by Chaeyung, Hwanji, and Liyun as the Chosen herself, parroting the apology Yumi feeds him to keep the warden from probing further.
- STD:YNP:Ch 10 Walks the tobok-and-clogs procession to the cool spring in Yumi's body, is bathed and re-dressed by the attendants, and faints from heat and ritual layers as they tie his bow.
- STD:YNP:Ch 11 Incorporeal in his own apartment, prompting Yumi through the door conversations and finally admitting under questioning that he is not the hero she has been treating him as.
- STD:YNP:Ch 13 Kneels through six prayers and his first ever attempt at meditation; sustains a finger through the forehead from Yumi when he tries to nap.
- STD:YNP:Ch 13 Fumbles through stacking in front of a crowd, dropping his first stone, mashing his finger, and toppling every subsequent attempt.
- STD:YNP:Ch 15 Sits incorporeal outside Yumi's changing room and is forced into an awkward explanation of what a bra is, then into admitting why he likes Akane; later gawks when Yumi emerges in the blue dress.
- STD:YNP:Ch 17 In ghost form across the bar at the Noodle Pupil, hears Design address him by name, ducks behind the counter to question her, and learns he and Yumi would need Hoid to actually understand what has happened to them.
- STD:YNP:Ch 17 Coaxes his viewer on with a touch of his ghost-finger to a hion line, queues up Seasons of Regret for Yumi, and then, after she switches it off, agrees with bad grace to train her in painting in exchange for her training him in stacking.
- STD:YNP:Ch 19 Wearing Yumi's body, perches on a boulder in the place of ritual, drops stones in protest, and complains his way through eight straight hours of stone-weighing without showing the faintest improvement.
- STD:YNP:Ch 19 Wakes back in his flat as a ghost, clears his mind and manages to pull on the soul of a different outfit — stiff trousers, simple shirt, untucked oversize — and is told, to his irritation, that the technique is meditation.
- STD:YNP:Ch 19 Reads the foreman's suspension letter, demonstrates the bamboo-painting technique on a pulled soul of brush and ink, snaps at Yumi to never touch the black portfolio in his trunk — and accidentally takes her hand for the second time, the warm Connection pulsing again before he withdraws.
- STD:YNP:Ch 21 Sprawls against the altar (still confused about altars vs futons) and deflects every one of Yumi's outraged sallies against the machine, pointing out that his own world is full of machines doing what people used to and nobody has withered for it.
- STD:YNP:Ch 21 Mutters at the back of the room when the clique declares an intervention, advises Yumi to send them away, and is visibly thrown when she agrees to go.
- STD:YNP:Ch 21 Watches the cord lengthen, processes Design's line about the survey, and audibly registers that the launch must be heading for Yumi's world.
- STD:YNP:Ch 23 Eats with chopsticks while Liyun probes for the leak and supplies a smooth fabricated story about an anonymous note — a competence that quietly unsettles Yumi.
- STD:YNP:Ch 23 Floats beside Yumi in the cool spring and admits — for the first time — that he has always felt like he was on the other side of a window, watching the world he could not enter; then proposes sneaking into the scholars' tent.
- STD:YNP:Ch 23 Wraps his clogs in stocking cloth (a trick from the dramas), strips down to silken under-layers as a worker disguise, and ambles slowly across the open stone toward the tent — slow ruins the illusion less than running, he insists.
- STD:YNP:Ch 25 Chuckles at Yumi's shock over an on-screen kiss, defends the sad ending of the drama arc, tastes the over-salted noodle soup with a spirit-spoon, and reluctantly agrees it is time to take her on patrol.
- STD:YNP:Ch 25 Walks Yumi past the murals and into the inner streets, spots the smoke-trail nightmare signs before she does, and works out aloud that his beat must never have been backfilled — which is how a stable nightmare could prowl unchallenged.
- STD:YNP:Ch 25 Goes up to scout the window first, finds the nightmare has noticed him as plainly as Design would, begins to dissolve into twin hion vortices as it feeds on him, snaps back into shape when Yumi screams it off, and afterwards calmly coaches her on what to tell the woman who has been bled on without knowing.
- STD:YNP:Ch 27 Walks in on Yumi with the open portfolio in her lap, does not rebuke her, and tells her the whole story instead — the failed Dreamwatch tryout, the lie kept alive on Akane's birthday, the year of pretending — then quietly repacks the souls of the paintings and accepts her invitation to spend the night out at the carnival.
- STD:YNP:Ch 29 Runs ahead of Yumi through the alleys to lead her by sight, calls out the turn into the playground, then deliberately splits off to draw the nightmare south — knowing it can only see *him* — and sends Yumi to circle back for the bell.
- STD:YNP:Ch 29 Rounds the playground in time to see the nightmare over Tojin, steps between them, summons a paintbrush of silver light from his own essence, and — even as his shape begins to crumble at the edges — paints around the creature on the concrete until it shrinks, breaks his spell with a howl, and flees. Then he kneels and embraces Yumi, pouring his heat into her until the freezing stops.
- STD:YNP:Ch 31 Rests in the spirit water of the spring picking holes in Yumi's time-travel theory and ribbing her about being a noodle princess; both of them note in silence that they would rather not solve any of this.
- STD:YNP:Ch 31 Paints townspeople in the shrine line one by one — simple portraits, still more skilful than his bamboo — while Yumi prays and meditates beside him.
- STD:YNP:Ch 31 Kneels at the place of ritual in Yumi's gloves and kneepads and lays each real stone over the spirit-stone she has set for him — building higher and faster than he ever has alone — and is the one to realise, when the spirit is dragged away, that she has been right all along about the machine.
- STD:YNP:Ch 33 Laughs in vindication when Design confirms Masaka is not human — *I knew it* — then kneels to study her map and palm-measures the distances; convinced that the shroud's walled circles overlap the towns of Torio. Memorises the drawing to reproduce later on his side.
- STD:YNP:Ch 33 Emerges from the kitchen as Yumi is finishing her speech in his defence; falls in beside her as she leaves dinner uneaten.
