Midnight Aether
also known as Midnight Essence
The aether form taken when midnight spores are germinated — a black, glossy blob of matter that imitates a nearby object or being and remains under its creator's control as long as they keep feeding it. Ulaam tells Tress it is the most practical of the spore creations for things like spying, and the most nefarious; that it needs constant water from the host who germinated it; and that a creation larger than a fist is likely to break free. Known facts
- bonded-host-must-fight-creations-impulsesThe not-rat carries its own preferences — it wants to pounce, to bite, to chase living prey — and resists boring tasks like reading. As long as the Luhel bond holds, the host has to consciously override those impulses; lose the contest and the creation starts to act on its own, until the bond ruptures and casts the host back into a dangerously dehydrated body.STD:Tress:Ch 30
- collapses-to-black-smoke-leaving-no-traceUlaam confirms for Tress that when a Luhel bond breaks, the Midnight Essence under the host's control evaporates into black smoke that disperses quickly and leaves no residue behind. As long as no one actually witnessed the aether moving while it was being controlled, a sneak-and-flee mission with one cannot be traced after the fact.STD:Tress:Ch 33
