Midnight Spores
The black spores of the Midnight Sea — the most dangerous of the twelve seas' varieties, and the only kind that bonds with its host. Germinated with water, they grow into a small, controllable blob of midnight aether that imitates a nearby object or creature; the bond drains water from the sprouter for as long as the creation persists, and anything larger than a fist tends to slip its leash. The black spores of the Midnight Sea — the most dangerous variety in the twelve seas and the second of the two no sane captain sails for. Tress turns up a small aluminum matchbox of them hidden under the bed of her new cabin: somehow Weev had got hold of a private supply. STD:Tress:Ch 23 superseded at STD:Tress:Ch 27
Known facts
- bond-with-host-trading-waterUnlike the other spores, midnight spores need a living water source — the person who germinates them — to sustain their growth into midnight aether. The resulting blob is a controllable imitation of something nearby, useful for spying; Ulaam warns Tress to keep water and a silver knife on hand whenever she practises, and never to germinate more than four or five grains at a time, because creations bigger than a fist tend to break free of their maker's control.STD:Tress:Ch 27
