Notum
A tall, imperious honorspren captain who glows a soft blue-white and wears a sharp, outdated naval uniform that is part of his substance. Sports an unusual beard cut — chin shaved like a Horneater's, but with a thin moustache and a sculpted line of hair from it up his cheeks into his sideburns. Commands the Honor's Path, one of the ships of Honor's own people; takes custody of Sylphrena and her human party in Celebrant to deliver them all to Lasting Integrity. SA:OB:Ch 108
Known facts
- notum-releases-syl-rather-than-surrender-herSets Sylphrena and the human party free in Longbrow's Straits rather than hand them to the closing Fused, even with Azure staying behind as a decoy aboard the Honor's Path; admits he cannot promise his captured crew will keep the secret for long, because hurting spren is easy.SA:OB:Ch 110
- exiled-for-life-for-letting-the-ancient-daughter-goSpent five months in a Lasting Integrity prison for releasing Syl after capturing her, was demoted to the lowest rank an honorspren can hold, and has been sentenced to two centuries of patrolling the empty coast between the waystop and Lasting Integrity — close enough to see the fortress, never permitted to set foot in it. He believes the exile is for life.SA:RoW:Ch 30
- rides-horse-shaped-sprenTravels his patrol on a graceful white spren shaped almost like a horse — long legs, a neck no spine could make, no mouth, hair waving like glowing ribbons in a phantom wind — controlled by a simple twisted-thread bridle. When Adolin remarks that few spren take animal shapes, he notes only that not all spren were imagined by men.SA:RoW:Ch 34
- exile-completed-by-his-own-peopleWhen Adolin insists Notum enter Lasting Integrity with the column for safety, the honorspren patrol declares his exile complete — his complicities, they say, run deeper than anticipated — and orders him sent back into the wilds rather than home.SA:RoW:Ch 36
- honor-is-not-dead-outcryAllowed into Lasting Integrity in exchange for ending his exile and testifying against Adolin, Notum instead set aside his written statement and shouted *Honor is not dead so long as he lives in the hearts of men* until officiators dragged him out of the forum — splitting the honorspren crowd between outrage and visible support.SA:RoW:Ch 87
- cobalt-guard-captain-without-radiant-bondNotum is the first known honorspren to come to the Physical Realm without a Radiant bond; he adapts in only a day, where Sylphrena needed years. Adolin grants him a battlefield commission as captain in the Cobalt Guard, in charge of the messenger corps, with the caveat that he cannot hold a weapon in this realm.SA:WaT:Ch 67
- wields-deadeye-shardplate-as-an-honorsprenAlmost incorporeal in the Azimir palace, Notum discovers the windspren of a deadeye Plate will accept him as its bearer — *not much* of him is enough to control it, confirming the old saying that the strength of the man inside Plate matters less than the bond once the armour is alive.SA:WaT:Ch 136
Events
- SA:OB:Ch 108 Tall, imperious honorspren captain in an outdated naval uniform, beard sculpted up his sideburns. Grants Shallan beads to practise with despite calling unmonitored manifesting dangerous. Tells Kaladin he released them because *it wasn't honorable* to keep them, lectures him on Sylphrena being too young of mind for a bond and offers killing him as a clean way to free her; later gapes when Kaladin mentions Dalinar's bond and asks pointedly *which Bondsmith.*
- SA:OB:Ch 110 Bowed-head bearded honorspren captain who will not meet Sylphrena's eyes; opens the cargo door for the jump, urges them to be swift, and admits he cannot promise his crew will hold the secret long once taken — hurting spren is easy enough.
