Telrii
A pompous duke of Arelon — strong-postured, gem-encrusted, gold-ringed, with a large purplish birthmark across the left of his face. Currently third-richest man in the kingdom behind King Iadon and Duke Roial, and one of the two men Lukel flags as next in line for the throne with Raoden gone. EL:EL:Ch 8
Known facts
- privately-accepts-hrathens-proposalFrom his private booth at Hrathen's chapel, Duke Telrii tells the gyorn that the proposal put to him after the recruitment meeting is too tempting for any man in Arelon to refuse — and accepts. Hrathen will need a week, and Wyrn's say-so, to begin.EL:EL:Ch 12
- receives-explicit-promise-of-throneOn the wall Hrathen crosses from veiled hints to an open promise: Telrii will have Arelon's throne. The duke also takes a standing payment to double his guards' wages — bribes routed through old friendships in the City Guard — so that the Guard learns to think of Telrii as a man who rewards loyalty.EL:EL:Ch 15
- seizes-elantris-city-guardTelrii has pulled the Elantris City Guard off the walls and onto his estate as a private force — six hundred men, enough to overmatch any remaining loyalist soldiers in Kae.EL:EL:Ch 35
- crowned-king-of-arelonCrowned king of Arelon under Fjordell patronage following Iadon's suicide, with Sarene in Elantris and the remaining nobility unable to mount a counter-claim.EL:EL:Ch 44
- letter-to-wyrn-demanding-gyorn-rankSent a letter directly to Wyrn of Fjorden days before Hrathen's audience, demanding clerical elevation to gyorn as the condition of his conversion to Shu-Dereth — a demand no Derethi doctrine permits, made to a man no living subject may make demands of.EL:EL:Ch 48
- killed-by-eondelBeheaded by Count Eondel in his own audience chamber the night after Roial's execution. The count's legion fought their way past Guard sentries, and Eondel's blade caught the king at the back-door threshold as he tried to flee.EL:EL:Ch 54
Events
- EL:EL:Ch 8 Pointed out by Lukel across the court — sparkling with gemstones, marked by a large purplish birthmark — as one of the two dukes in line for the throne.
- EL:EL:Ch 9 Uninvited but present at the back of the room — older, ringed, rubbing a large ruby and watching Hrathen with a musing expression. Hrathen holds him back at the end for a private proposal.
- EL:EL:Ch 12 Watches the sermons from a private side booth of the chapel, accepts Hrathen's standing proposal, and slips out a side door into the twilight with his attendants.
- EL:EL:Ch 14 Hosts a ball so lavishly lit that even the torches burn imported rocks; treats Sarene with calculated disinterest while pointedly avoiding any public connection to Hrathen.
- EL:EL:Ch 15 Wraps himself in a hood and a lavish lavender cloak; voices second thoughts after learning at his own ball that Hrathen was the gyorn in Duladel, then accepts the bargain when given an explicit promise of the throne.
- EL:EL:Ch 24 Picks Hrathen up in his carriage as the crowd disperses, complains that the princess has spoiled the public-enemy plan, and accepts the pivot to bankrupting the king only after Hrathen dangles money. Drops Hrathen short of the Derethi chapel in a calculated snub.
- EL:EL:Ch 25 Watches the unloading with lazy eyes and refuses to lift anything himself, sending a manservant in to do the work for him.
- EL:EL:Ch 32 Runs his own near-equal court of nobles in a hedged garden opposite Iadon's — sounding nothing like a man whose gyorn backer has just been lost.
- EL:EL:Ch 38 Watches the scroll be read with visible frustration; his claim collapses before he can speak.
- EL:EL:Ch 39 Catches Hrathen's eye in passing and nods, accepting the favour.
- EL:EL:Ch 48 Receives Hrathen in his lavishly redecorated study; refuses the agreed conversion and reveals he has petitioned Wyrn directly to be elevated to gyorn.
- EL:EL:Ch 53 Bursts into Kiin's kitchen with a Guard detachment and Ahan, orders Roial killed and the rest of the conspirators executed — then panics and runs when Raoden reveals himself alive.
- EL:EL:Ch 54 Glimpsed across the burning audience chamber, fleeing toward the back door; Eondel's sword catches him at the threshold.
