Water Cannonball
The standard ship-to-ship round on the spore seas: a hollow ceramic shell carrying a charge of metal beads and a payload of water. On impact it shatters and dumps the water onto the spores, which germinate explosively into vines that grip and tear the target ship. STD:Tress:Ch 9
Known facts
- fused-to-incapacitateA water cannonball is supposed to be fused to burst against a ship's hull rather than punch through it — incapacitating the target so it can be boarded and looted, not sunk. The round that holed the Oot's Dream's hold flew clean through both walls because its fuse was defective.STD:Tress:Ch 13
- internal-mechanism-three-aethersReading Weev's salvaged papers, Tress learns that a standard cannonball on her world combines three aethers in sequence. Firing breaks a small glass vial of water onto a clipping of verdant aether, whose vine grows at a measured rate down a tube and drives a silver-tipped plug into a roseite sphere; the silver cracks the sphere, water floods out onto the zephyr spores packed around it, and the charge detonates. The fuse length is the length of vine; silver is the one thing that can wound roseite; wax inside the sphere insulates the water from the spores until the moment of breaking.STD:Tress:Ch 36
