Blatant Barm

The villain in a story Wayne's mother used to tell — *the worst villain there ever was* — who in the end is hunted by the lawman to a mesa and turns out to *be* the mesa itself. Wayne could never make the ending make sense as a child; on the Bilming billboard, watching the floodlights atop Independence Tower, he tells Wax the spire is the mesa and finally has a guess at what his mother might have meant: that it is the world itself, not any one bad man, that we have to worry about.
