El
A tall, untitled, completely rhythmless Fused whose carapace has been remade into magnificent shimmering steel ridged with metal horns — *not to be trifled with,* in Leshwi's warning to Venli. He differs from the other Fused in tolerating, even valuing, dissent: those who turn against Odium are often their best, he tells Venli, and *if we cull ourselves of our strongest wills, what is left?* He is the only one of his kind to have no honourific title, and is the writer of the Part Five epigraphs *Musings of El.* SA:WaT:Ch 91
Identified only by the epigraph attribution "Musings of El, on the first of the Final Ten Days" — a writer whose musings replace the Lasting Integrity letter as the book's epigraph series in Part Five, beginning with a wry note about looking forward to ruling humans. SA:RoW:Ch 98 superseded at SA:WaT:Ch 91
Known facts
- experiments-on-fused-souls-with-warped-voidlightEl is testing a knife that holds Voidlight warped around its gemstone — the new god granted an exception to revive a Fused the old way solely so El could try it. He uses it on the Pursuer and tears the Fused's soul apart. El wears metal carapace inclusions in place of natural ones, is forbidden the rhythms, and speaks without one.SA:RoW:Ch 116
- named-ruler-by-odium-the-nine-report-to-himNamed ruler — with no title, at his own insistence — by the new Odium. The Nine are folded under him and ordered to report to him. He is to lead the assault on the Shattered Plains via the Horneater Peaks with Dai-Gonarthis joining him to open the portal in.SA:WaT:I-3
- heralds-deserve-annihilationSpeaks of the Heralds — his former friends — as a people that *enslaved* his own when left in charge of Roshar. To him their destruction is *a mercy*, and he will help bring it.SA:WaT:I-3
- rewards-dissent-as-a-mark-of-the-bestEl tells Venli he is of a different mindset than other Fused — that those who rebel against Odium are often their best, that the previous Odium stamped them out and wasted them, and that he finally has a god who shares his tolerance. He offers Venli elevation to Fused status and pardon for Leshwi and the other rebel Heavenly Ones — in exchange for the chasmfiends she has somehow won over.SA:WaT:Ch 91
- threatens-listener-refugees-explicitlyEl lets Venli know that Odium knows about her listener refugees at the edge of the plateaus and intends to deal with them soon. The offer he extends is, frankly, the only avenue to their survival.SA:WaT:Ch 91
- forms-a-shardblade-from-the-airWhen a Magnified One in his retinue draws back a hand to strike Venli, El forms a long thin sword from air — a Shardblade — and runs it through the side of the Fused's head without looking up from Jasnah's treaty. *We will hold to the terms our god has made.*SA:WaT:Ch 137
Events
- SA:RoW:Ch 116 Stands at a Kholinar window with his back turned, metal carapace inclusions catching the Voidlight wrong, speaks without rhythm, and kills the Pursuer with a knife of warped Light.
- SA:WaT:Ch 91 The metal-horned Fused Leshwi kneels before, who introduces himself by name to Venli — *Once Odium's own Voice. Welcome.* — offers her elevation to Fused and pardon for her allies, and threatens her listener refugees if she refuses.
- SA:WaT:Ch 118 Carried onto the captured Narak plateau by a Heavenly One, strolls the camp, and posts Venli's chasmfiends to a staging plateau in case the humans attempt a rally — wary of the wrong kind of trap.
- SA:WaT:Ch 137 Reads Jasnah's treaty quietly, forms a Shardblade from air to kill the Fused who proposes simply taking Narak, then dismisses the Blade and accepts the terms — *we will hold to the terms our god has made.* He calls for the retreat.
