Logna
also known as Thokk
A goddess of the Weswaran pantheon, sister of Woden — *mother of monsters, harbinger of the end of the time of gods.* She walked beside John from the Preserve onward disguised as the hearth-keeper Thokk in order to hide her presence from her brother, steered him toward the Maelport crisis, and resumed her own form after Sefawynn broke Woden's hold on the city. She declines to remain at John's beck and call afterward — she says she is in the whole business for the stories — but tells him that as long as he keeps moving across Weswara, his presence will protect Sefawynn from Woden without poisoning the land. STD:FWH:Ch 37
A goddess of the Weswaran pantheon, sister of Woden — *mother of monsters, harbinger of the end of the time of gods.* She has walked beside John since the Preserve disguised as the hearth-keeper Thokk, steering him without his noticing; her body breaks apart when she touches anything from John's dimension, and she cannot get near Ulric at all. STD:FWH:Ch 35 superseded at STD:FWH:Ch 37
A short, thickset old hearth-keeper with white hair piled on wooden sticks — a travelling tinder-seller working the road near the Preserve. She informs Yazad's house that she has seen a red-haired beardless stranger pass through and pronounces, on first sight, that John is a perfectly fine specimen of aelv and that she is dangerous when she wants to be. STD:FWH:Ch 17 superseded at STD:FWH:Ch 35
A figure invoked by one of the villagers as a possible cause of the strange burn in the field — Logna's flames being a candidate explanation for the scorched circle and the human-shaped silhouette left within it. STD:FWH:Ch 1 superseded at STD:FWH:Ch 17
Known facts
- speaks-in-johns-ear-and-knows-his-nameBack at the preserve John addresses the voice that nudged him during the fight in Wellbury and the same one that burned across the Hordaman sail. It answers in his ear that it does not take orders, it accepts bargains, and tonight it wants none — addressing him by the name he kept private, *John of Seattle*. It knows the city he is from.STD:FWH:Ch 23
- plays-the-wicce-on-the-roadCornered by John between the trees and the road, Thokk admits the act — she is not a wicce, a forest spirit, or a god in disguise. She is a regular old woman who got tired of being told regular old women do not travel alone, and discovered that other people will write the witch story for her if she gives them the slightest excuse. So she gives them the excuse. The act stops working in a group, which is why she has to scout from behind rocks if she wants to keep the routine going.STD:FWH:Ch 24
- thins-near-outsider-techLogna cannot touch outsider machinery without paying for it — breaking the small augment in Wellbury cost her a day before she could re-form a body. The longer the outsiders stay in Maelport, the thinner she gets, *like a plank sanded until you can see light through it.* She cannot get near Ulric at all; her essence breaks apart in his presence. Stopping him has to fall to John.STD:FWH:Ch 35
Events
- STD:FWH:Ch 23 Answers in John's ear when he addresses the nudge from Wellbury aloud — declines all bargains for the night and signs off by calling him John of Seattle, putting the lie to any thought that the voice was internal monologue.
- STD:FWH:Ch 28 The wight attached to John speaks to him near the rock and names the poison Earth-presence carries for wights.
- STD:FWH:Ch 35 Catches John's elbow before he can dash into the square, gives him sight to see the hearth-wights hiding under the eaves, explains Woden's real motive, reveals herself, and sends John off to break the portal — what she cannot touch.
- STD:FWH:Ch 37 Appears behind John and Sefawynn on the dock, still in Thokk's old-woman shape; reports on Ealstan's survival and Godric's death, sends Sefawynn back to the city, and stops John from drowning himself — first by mockery, then by telling him he can stay if he keeps moving.
- STD:FWH:Ch 17 Arrives with a basket of tinder-sticks, presents one to the aelv with a stiff warning that she is dangerous when she wants to be, and describes the red-haired stranger she met on the road in enough detail for John to sketch him.
- STD:FWH:Ch 18 Calls Wealdsig a fool to his absent face, snipes at Woden for being a drunkard who keeps wanting more wine, and declines Yazad's invitation to convert on the grounds that his god wouldn't want her anyway.
- STD:FWH:Ch 19 Insists on coming inside the walls of Wellbury despite Ealstan and Sefawynn trying to leave her at the storehouse — she pronounces them dead without her help and pronounces the apple farm boring.
- STD:FWH:Ch 20 Refuses Ealstan's polite suggestion that she stay at the corner, sneaks the alleyway with surprising quiet, and snickers from outside the window as John reads Wealdsig's choice of his own crotch behind the cloak.
- STD:FWH:Ch 24 Pops out from behind a rock along the road as the three riders pass, asks if she can travel a while for safety, drops behind with John, and explains the wicce-on-the-road routine — then warns him too late about the bandits who were waiting in the trees.
- STD:FWH:Ch 25 Steps in close to a tense John and tells him to be quiet — these are desperate men who have already shed their fathers and their gods and cannot be frightened — then plays the harmless-old-aunt card with the lead bandit, naming John her slow-witted nephew on the spot, and sighs when he congratulates the bandits for being the first thing in this country to make sense to him.
- STD:FWH:Ch 26 Among the bandits at the fire; turns to face John as he runs in.
- STD:FWH:Ch 27 Among the bandits at the fire.
- STD:FWH:Ch 28 Among those at the fire when Ryan turns on John.
- STD:FWH:Ch 29 Suggests Sefawynn share the tool shack with her for the night.
- STD:FWH:Ch 30 On the third horse with the gear; rides past Sefawynn muttering 'fool'.
- STD:FWH:Ch 31 Refuses to be parked with Hend and the horses, telling Ryan that the chance the Ulric's men might kill her is part of the fun; threatens to curse him if he keeps insisting.
- STD:FWH:Ch 32 Splits with Sefawynn when the alarm rings; murmurs in John's ear as a leaf-rustle voice, talking him onto Quinn as he comes down the alley.
- STD:FWH:Ch 33 Whispers in John's ear, a voice like rustling leaves, that bringing more outsiders through to fight the Hordamen would break this land in a different way — then pops the locks on the saferoom shutter from a single berry, complaining at the principle of the bribe.
