Pakson
One of the Dougs aboard the Crow's Song. Tall and a bit awkward on land — built as if his legs were always one size too large for his torso, and bald despite his relative youth, with a chin that runs more or less directly into his neck. The first crewman to die on the Crimson crossing, run through by aether spikes when a wave sloshes crimson spores across the deck. STD:Tress:Ch 42
Known facts
- killed-by-spores-on-deckPakson is the first crewman lost on the Crimson crossing. When Salay's evasive turn skirts the Song past a rainline and the resulting waves spill spores across the deck, the silver is overwhelmed for a few seconds and he is run through where he stands at the foot of the quarterdeck steps, multiple aether spikes erupting through him at once.STD:Tress:Ch 42
- kind-doug-who-helped-tress-aboardThe narrator, who has earlier implied that he could not be bothered to learn the names of the Dougs, admits in retrospect that he was lying for narrative convenience. Pakson had a sister also serving on the Song; he was unaccountably kind, had thanked Fort for every bad meal he had ever eaten, and was the Doug who had kept checking on Tress when she was clinging to the side of the ship and then had helped haul her back aboard. He had always wanted to learn music, and never had.STD:Tress:Ch 43
Events
- STD:Tress:Ch 42 On the main deck at the foot of the quarterdeck steps when a wave washes live spores over the rail. The silver is overwhelmed for a few seconds and he is impaled in place by a sudden eruption of aether spikes — the first crewman lost on the Crimson crossing.
