The Dougs
The narrator's collective name for every member of the Crow's Song's crew he does not bother to remember individually. *Doug*, he insists, is a kind of linguistic convergent evolution that turns up across worlds — and, at minimum, one of the Crow's Song's Dougs really is named Doug, though he can no longer recall which. Known facts
- volunteer-to-eat-verdant-and-continue-voyageConfronted with the news that the food stores will only stretch back to the Verdant Sea, a delegation of Dougs meets Tress holding her captain's cap and tells her to keep going. They volunteer to eat verdant vines for a few weeks to stretch supplies enough to reach the Sorceress's island and back — because they will be the only pirates who ever robbed the Sorceress herself.STD:Tress:Ch 55
Events
- STD:Tress:Ch 23 Play cards with Hoid long enough to relieve him of his wages, then his remaining shoe, then leave him to find someone else to fleece.
- STD:Tress:Ch 24 Cluster anxiously at the rail through the long pursuit, scramble for muskets when Crow calls them to arms, cheer the clean capture, and pry Ann's pistol out of her grip in favour of a cutlass before she can use it.
- STD:Tress:Ch 25 Scramble in shouts after the prey's first hit, half a dozen of them wrestling Ann for her pistol while Crow does the actual shooting.
- STD:Tress:Ch 26 Throw the boarding hooks across the gap, drop anchor, and stand with weapons trained on the merchant crew through the standoff between Crow and Salay. None speak up — knowing whichever side they back, someone is about to get shot.
- STD:Tress:Ch 42 Working the sails and the wheel under Salay's orders through the rainline attack; three of them heave at the wheel with her to bend the Song aside in time. After Pakson is killed they remember their training and scramble for the emergency towels, sopping up his blood off the deck before any of it can run over the rail into the spores.
- STD:Tress:Ch 43 Up on the topdeck after Pakson's death, fishing the air to bring down what gulls they can — partly to keep their hands busy and partly because birds are rare on the Crimson and you take them when you find them. One spots another distant rainline from the rigging as Tress heads belowdecks; it swerves and vanishes without coming near the ship.
- STD:Tress:Ch 44 Eating in the galley after a long rain-haunted day; Captain Crow has approved opening a keg in their honour. They cheer Tress on her way out — not only, the narrator notes, because they are mildly drunk: Fort's cooking has improved sharply since she started helping.
- STD:Tress:Ch 47 Gather on deck shouting half-formed escape ideas — including running across the spores — and a lanky woman with a long tail of hair is sent by Tress to fetch the rope and water barrel. Once the aether tree has the ship aloft, they cheer the rescue (belatedly, the narrator notes) and help haul Tress back over the rail.
- STD:Tress:Ch 49 Gather on either side of the deck under Crow's call and watch the duel in silence, then lower their eyes as the captain scans them in its aftermath. The ship goes quiet — not the quiet of falling snow, the narrator says, but the quiet of a hospital room after a loved one has died.
- STD:Tress:Ch 52 Cheer Tress as she settles into the ship's launch after her return from the dragon's lair, and hoist her up to the deck as the spore tunnel collapses behind her.
- STD:Tress:Ch 55 A small delegation waits outside Huck's quarters, the lead Doug holding Tress's captain's cap. They ask her to keep sailing for the Sorceress's island and volunteer to eat verdant vines for the duration — surprising Tress with the news that fully grown vines, soaked, are technically edible. One concludes that after this they will be the only pirates who ever robbed the Sorceress.
- STD:Tress:Ch 61 Vote unanimously to give chase, line up at the stern poised to dump their barrels of water into the spores if Fort's parley with the monsters fails.
- STD:Tress:Ch 62 Work the sails to Salay's shouted orders as the ship threads the rocks.
- STD:Tress:Ch 63 Whoop and cheer on deck as the tower vanishes into the sky.
- STD:Tress:Epilogue Crew of the Two Cups; about to come ashore for leave, all but Laggart who is in the brig for starting a bar fight at the last port.
