Sisirinah
also known as Sisirinah Royal
Youngest of King Dedelin's four children at seventeen, redundant to the Idrian succession and happy to use it as cover for skipping tutorials and disappearing into the hills for hours. She is unable to keep her Royal Locks pinned to obedient black — they bleed blond with joy in the fields and flame-red when she is angry — and unable, by her own admission, to take Vorin propriety as seriously as her elder sister Vivenna does. STD:WB:Ch 1
Known facts
- fourth-childFourth and youngest of King Dedelin's children at seventeen — Vivenna the heir-bride, Ridger the heir, Fafen the monk — and treats the redundancy as licence to skip her lessons.STD:WB:Ch 1
- confined-to-court-of-godsAs wife of the God King, Siri is forbidden to leave the Court of Gods for the rest of her life; she may have anything brought to her, but she is not allowed out into T'Telir or the kingdom. The Wedding Jubilation further confines her to the palace itself for a week.STD:WB:Ch 8
- priests-listeningLearns from Treledees that the God King's priests have been monitoring her bedchamber from outside the door and know she has not yet lain with her husband — and that her position as Idrian queen now depends on producing an heir on their schedule.STD:WB:Ch 16
- fakes-consummationFaced with Treledees's threats and listening priests at the door, Siri climbs onto the God King's bed and counterfeits the sounds of consummation — a creak of the springs, a series of moans — for the priesthood's benefit. Susebron watches in baffled silence and does not give her away.STD:WB:Ch 18
- teaches-susebron-to-readAgrees to teach the God King his letters in secret, starting that night with shash, the first letter on the first page of his book of children's stories — a private defiance of the priests who have spent his life keeping him mute and unread.STD:WB:Ch 20
- suspects-priests-of-threatAssembles the pattern aloud in the bedchamber: Bluefingers said the danger is the child, not the act; the danger would arrive only after there was an heir; Returned do not age and do not catch diseases, and only four God Kings in centuries have died of "mysterious circumstances". The threat she has been warned about is almost certainly the priests themselves — willing, once an heir exists, to murder their own god.STD:WB:Ch 24
- hides-research-behind-lightsongRealising her own palace priests will only ever provide a storyteller who tells the official line, she asks Lightsong to order one in to his palace instead — using the court's only god who will talk to her as a screen for the research her own household will not permit.STD:WB:Ch 27
- extraction-bargain-with-bluefingersSiri struck a private bargain with Bluefingers in the bath chamber: in exchange for her promise to look after his Pahn Kahl people if her plans succeed, Bluefingers will get her and Susebron out of the palace if they fail. She also lied to him that Susebron himself had ordered the contact.STD:WB:Ch 34
- swaps-handmaids-to-pahn-kahlTo pry an unrelated concession out of Treledees in exchange for resuming her nightly act for the priestly listeners, Siri demands that her principal serving women be replaced with Pahn Kahl women. She frames the request as fellow-feeling between exiles and a fondness for their browns; the real aim is to put Bluefingers' people close to her so that, if she has to run with Susebron, she will have allies in her chambers.STD:WB:Ch 40
- consummates-marriage-with-susebronThe bedchamber conversation that began as a debate over God King succession ends with Siri and Susebron kissing, then sleeping together for the first time — on her initiative, her hair flushed deep red, the priests' listeners about to get the heir they have been waiting for.STD:WB:Ch 44
- priests-falsely-declare-her-pregnant-and-confine-herSusebron's priests intercept Siri in the palace corridors on her way to the assembly with a file of Lifeless, announce that she is with child, and confine her to her chambers. She knows the announcement is a lie — and realises in the same moment that the priests do not need her to actually conceive, only to be believed to have done so, before they spring their next move.STD:WB:Ch 49
Events
- STD:WB:Ch 1 Gallops back into the palace courtyard from her stolen ride, hair flame-red, laughing with a stableman — the moment her father sees her through the study window and chooses her over Vivenna.
- STD:WB:Ch 16 Sits formally for Lightsong's call, attempts the courtesies due a Returned, then throws up her hands and demands to know whether he is making fun of her. Receives a quiet hand on her shoulder before he goes.
- STD:WB:Ch 58 Watches the stranger Return in front of her husband, shares a baffled look with her sister, and listens as the founding of the D'Denir is laid out as a war plan against the advancing Lifeless army.
