Idris
The cold highland kingdom north of Hallandren, living by the austere teachings of Austrinism: drab clothing, whitewashed stone, no bright colour anywhere, Awakeners unwelcome by definition since without colour they have nothing to work with. Ruled from Bevalis by King Dedelin under a fragile peace treaty with the lowland court below the passes. STD:WB:Ch 1
Known facts
- true-hallandren-royal-lineThe Idrian highland kings are not, despite the Court of Gods' rhetoric, foreign rebels — they are the actual surviving royal line of pre-Manywar Hallandren, whose continued existence in the mountains is a standing challenge to the Court of Gods' legitimacy. Any sensible monarch executes anyone with a better claim than his own; that is why a faction wants them killed.STD:WB:Ch 5
- many-idrians-living-in-ttelirParlin's scouting of the T'Telir market turns up many Idrians — some trading, many working as common labourers — easily distinguished by their muted dress and accented voices. Commerce up in Idris has been weak enough lately that countrymen have drifted south for work in surprising numbers.STD:WB:Ch 9
- expats-in-ttelirPerhaps ten thousand Idrians live in T'Telir — most of them families who fled the highlands after a crop failure or a forfeited farm rather than leave a wife and children to starve for the weeks it would take to petition the king for relief from a distant village.STD:WB:Ch 28
- royal-line-descends-from-first-returnedHoid tells Siri what her own people apparently do not say: the Idrian royal house descends from the First Returned through the pregnant widow who became the first queen of Hanald. When her descendants broke away they took that blood with them, leaving the God Kings of Hallandren without it.STD:WB:Ch 32
