Tashi's Light Orphanage
An orphanage built into the corner of the Tashikki immigrant quarter of Yeddaw — the bright-orange face on the main street is for officials, the alley side opens onto a half-circle of stone benches where urchins are told to wait. Run on a hard line: three meals total per beggar, no more, with the door shut behind each one. Locals call its caretaker the Stump. SA:ED:Ch 6
Events
- SA:ED:Ch 6 Orange-faced corner building set into the rock of the immigrant quarter, with an alley side that opens onto a half-circle of stone benches; the place Lift picks for tonight's meal and stone-bench bed.
- SA:ED:Ch 10 The doors are open and the children let out into the amphitheatre between meals; the Stump hands out clemabread from a cart and disciplines fighters with earmuffs and quiet corners.
- SA:ED:Ch 17 Lift is dragged in out of the coming storm and finds the big entry room full of frightened children sitting on mats by the light of a single ruby sphere, the Stump handing out cold sweet-centred pancakes from a private stash, her older helper murmuring in the next room about going up top to charge spheres in the strange storm.
- SA:ED:Ch 19 The whole building becomes the battlefield: Darkness cuts the bar off the entry door with his Blade, the children huddle in the main room as Lift glows like steam off a hot griddle, the kitchen wall serves as her hiding place, the upper hallway is where the Stump is beaten down, and the rooftop trapdoor opens onto the storm.
- SA:ED:Ch 20 The morning after the Everstorm, the orphanage stands more or less intact — Lift holds court in the Stump's bedroom upstairs eating pancakes off the dresser, the front door opens for Mik's mother, and Ghenna is shown up to the same room. Lift slips out the front door with a wink to one of the orphans on her way out of the city.
