Thude
A bearded young listener of Eshonai's generation and circle of friends, easy-going and prone to teasing. Thinks aloud about taking mateform with a femalen named Bila, in part for the bond it leaves behind. SA:RoW:Ch 57
Known facts
- led-listener-survivors-into-exileYears before, Thude refused stormform and was central to the group of listeners — mostly the femalens and malens closest to Eshonai — who walked away from Venli's new order. Eshonai separated them off rather than killing them as Venli had wanted, and they survived as nomads in the hills near the Unclaimed Hills.SA:RoW:Ch 96
- listeners-bonded-chasmfiendsThude and the listeners who escaped the Shattered Plains survived the chasms during the Everstorm by way of chasmfiends; the great creatures walk unalarmed through their camp on the eastern flats.SA:RoW:Ch 115
- leader-of-listeners-and-composerThude sits on the Five who lead the surviving listeners and, in the absence of a keeper of songs after Jaxlim's long illness, has taught himself composition — authoring *the Song of the Beasts* about the truce with the chasmfiends.SA:WaT:Ch 56
Events
- SA:RoW:Ch 57 Stands at the shelter mouth chewing fruit with Eshonai, teases that Venli has finally sauntered out to find mateform, and is the first to ask her, when she returns, whether it had worked.
- SA:RoW:Ch 68 Among the dozen listeners who take warform in the storm beside Eshonai; restrains Melu from grabbing for the Shardbearer's Blade and argues for not killing anyone in the standoff outside the gates.
- SA:RoW:Ch 81 Runs the plateaus in warform with Eshonai and Rlain, then presses her on whether Gavilar's death was worth what is coming.
- SA:RoW:Ch 115 Emerges from behind the listeners' rock fortification in warform; refuses to trust Venli at first, then walks with her to Jaxlim. A chasmfiend looms unalarmed nearby.
- SA:WaT:Ch 56 Asks Leshwi to walk with them in the camp, then sits with Venli afterward and sings her *the Song of the Beasts*.
- SA:WaT:Ch 58 Sings *the Song of the Beasts* and afterward presses Venli on its meaning — the chasmfiends never saw the listeners as food, only as rivals worth living beside.
- SA:WaT:Ch 60 Hears the stones' chorus during the storm and agrees, with the other budding Willshapers, to join Venli's expedition through the chasms to Narak.
- SA:WaT:Ch 72 Walks at Venli's side with a gemstone for light, voicing the listeners' refusal to fight and asking her, at last, to let the past go.
- SA:WaT:Ch 79 Proposes the dullform spy plan and volunteers himself first.
- SA:WaT:Ch 89 Calls the vote of the Five and appoints nine of the listeners to hold the chasm entrance while the rest descend.
- SA:WaT:Ch 90 Reaches the cavern beneath Narak first, taps the pool with his axe, and asks whether all three Shards have one of these.
- SA:WaT:Ch 101 Insists that *rejecting him is what defines us* — the listener position Thude holds without qualification.
- SA:WaT:Ch 112 Stands tall on the chasmfiend's back beside Venli on the staging plateau above Narak — *it's easy, once you get the hang of it.*
- SA:WaT:Ch 118 Whoops on the chasmfiend's back at the start of the Narak charge — joyful, almost the old him again — and afterwards laughs while the others stand wobbly and traumatised by the ride.
- SA:WaT:Ch 137 Holds up the Jasnah-signed treaty and, to Determination, asks El to withdraw his forces under its terms.
- SA:WaT:Ch 146 Kneels by the filling pool and asks Venli what it means; is told their little land is going to be important to the coming world.
