POV: navani
Summary
Navani sits forward as the small meeting room — monarchs in an inner ring, highprinces and viziers and lesser primes around them — freezes on Wit's confirmation: Odium is no longer the same person. The Sibling and the Stormfather both speak inside her head; the Stormfather reaches out, *looks*, and admits it — Rayse is dead, the tone of the Shard has changed, and a new Vessel he cannot name now holds it. He regrets only that his own lightning and wind never reached Rayse's corpse. Wit explains the consequence: a formal contract still binds the Shard regardless of bearer, but the lesser promise Rayse made Dalinar not to chase loopholes died with him. The new Odium will be brasher than the old, more willing to risk. Fen asks whether they can simply walk away from the contest; Wit answers that breaking the contract frees Odium to kill every person on the planet with a flick of the wrist. *Well*, Fen says, sitting back, *that answers that*.
Navani lays the geometry out flat. Eight days; if any of Azimir, Thaylen City, or the Shattered Plains capitulates, the whole kingdom passes to Odium regardless of the contest. Wit has already chased every clever variant — changing capitals, equivalent moves — and his off-planet consultant ruled them all foul under Alethi law. *Three armies, three capitals, eight days*, she says aloud. Dalinar turns to logistics: *we do not give one inch of stone to him*. Stargyle raises Shallan's Lightwoven battlefield map in the middle of the chamber and the Mink walks through it like a man wading.
The map shows the bind. The bulk of coalition force is in Emul, six days from Azimir and unable to be moved through an Oathgate in time; the Oathgate at Azimir will soon stop functioning for coalition use under the contract; reinforcements will be locked out. Thaylen City faces two hundred troop transports bearing roughly forty thousand singers. The Shattered Plains faces a thousand Fused — including thunderclasts, Heavenly Ones, and Deepest Ones — which Sigzil warns is suicide for conventional troops without Radiant support. Urithiru is its own fortress; the Sibling confirms that no Fused or Regal can hold a singer form inside the tower since their reawakening, and the enemy knows it.
The plan that lands: a thin defence at Azimir to hold the dome until the returning Emul army arrives in five or six days; the twenty thousand Urithiru can spare to Thaylen City to man the walls; Radiants to Narak to counter Fused Investiture. Jasnah takes Thaylen City herself, bringing Stonewards to reseal walls and Edgedancers to heal. Sigzil gets Narak with the Stormwall in reserve. Adolin volunteers for Azimir — two thousand of Alethkar's best plus the Cobalt Guard — and Dalinar visibly hesitates, asking eventually who will lead the other fronts because his own attention has to go to the contest preparation. The room reads the hesitation; Yanagawn vouches for him as a swordsman trained by the Blackthorn himself, and Dalinar nods his son through.
The meeting breaks. Adolin hesitates at the door, comes back, and delivers Shallan's message Dalinar could only learn here: a network of offworld spies — the Ghostbloods — has been inside Urithiru from the start, recruited her when she was new and isolated, and is moving now. She needs authorization for an operation and a Radiant strike force. Dalinar dislikes greenlighting a strike on a group he barely knows, and Adolin cuts back with the worst line he can — *you don't know about it because you killed the woman who raised me*. Evi's name is not spoken, but everyone in the room hears it. Dalinar gives the authorization anyway.
The reconciliation is half a reconciliation. Dalinar catches Adolin at the door, can't manage the apology Navani is silently begging for, and instead offers a Bondsmithing — a Connection that will let Adolin understand Azish for as long as he's in country. Adolin grunts, nods, and goes. Navani presses her husband on why he won't say more; he answers, quietly, that he did not so much raise Adolin as order him. Then his eyes turn distant. There is, he says, something more important he needs to talk through after the strategy session — with her, Jasnah, Wit, maybe Fen. *On the way to the meeting today, I encountered a god*.
