Nomad
also known as Nomad
A weary, dark-skinned traveller who wakes among condemned strangers on a planet whose language he does not know. He gives only the name Nomad, calls his own work-name a "soldier" he used to be, and is hunted across the cosmere by the Night Brigade — fleeing from world to world by Skipping when his stored Investiture allows. A bond he calls the Torment now binds his body whenever he tries to harm anyone, and he speaks constantly with a monotone voice in his head he calls Aux. STD:TSM:Ch 1
An Azish-accented Makabaki bridgeman with dark brown skin, black hair, and no beard — the rare clean-shaven one in Bridge Four. Asks Kaladin sharp questions when he demands the men train. SA:WoK:Ch 14 superseded at STD:TSM:Ch 1
Known facts
- research-programSigzil takes on the role of Kaladin's researcher, opening a ledger of glyph-notes on what Kaladin can do with Stormlight — and immediately running up against the limits of his own tools: no clock for the timing, no way to measure how much Light a given sphere holds.SA:WoR:Ch 12
- hunted-across-cosmereIs hunted across the cosmere by the Night Brigade and will not stop running — he believes no world he Skips to can hide him from them for long.STD:TSM:Ch 1
- homeworld-no-soilComes from a world without soil, where plants are far more vigorous than those on other planets and move to avoid being trodden on.STD:TSM:Ch 1
- bonded-to-auxCarries Auxiliary with him as a voice in his head and a shapeshifting metal tool he can summon at need; refers to Aux as his knight, addressed in return as the squire or valet.STD:TSM:Ch 1
- was-aspiring-scholarWas once an aspiring scholar — inquisitive by nature, in the habit of asking questions about how a world worked — before pointedly turning away from that life and becoming a soldier. He still has to beat the questions back with a firm hand.STD:TSM:Ch 2
- heals-on-investitureIs not immortal but is built of strong stuff — a baseline level of Investiture toughens his body, lets him heal burns and battering, and adapts him to local air pressure. Persistent or advanced weapons can still kill him by running his reserves down.STD:TSM:Ch 2
- tricks-torment-with-weightDiscovered in the arena that the Torment can be slipped by indirect means — holding Aux as a hundred-pound barbell over his head and leaping into an attacker's path is not "doing harm" enough to trip the lock, even though the collision flattens her.STD:TSM:Ch 3
- metabolizes-foreign-investitureHas acquired, as one of the rare gifts that came tangled up with his Torment, the unusual capacity to take in and convert almost any source of Investiture for his own use — sometimes with Aux as the intermediary.STD:TSM:Ch 4
- words-once-spokenCarries a buried memory of words he once spoke in a moment of true radiance — surfacing here, in the dark behind his own closed eyes, when he hears a stranger he owes nothing scream for help and finds himself unwilling, after all, to let the man die.STD:TSM:Ch 4
- fires-rifle-by-aiming-wideCannot fire a weapon at a person — the Torment freezes him the moment he touches a gun with intent — but learns in this fight that he can pull the trigger as long as he aims far enough away from any actual target, treating the rifle as a noisemaker rather than a weapon.STD:TSM:Ch 5
- chose-to-rescue-gap-toothed-manCursing himself for a fool, doubled back across the bombed-out arena field — under fire and at the edge of his Investiture reserves — to drag the gap-toothed man from the mud and throw him onto the rescuers' hovercycle, calling the impulse "the weight of forgotten oaths" on his shoulders.STD:TSM:Ch 5
- absorbs-potential-not-kineticHis Investiture-leeching ability works only on stable, *potential* sources — batteries, gemstones, charged cells — not on energy actively in motion. A rifle blast aimed at him, or the raw light of a sun, is too kinetic and intense to be absorbed. Drawing Investiture out of a living being is harder still and only possible under very specific circumstances.STD:TSM:Ch 6
- speaks-alethi-as-codeHabitually speaks his asides to Aux in Alethi — a language not native to him — so that the locals of whatever planet he is on cannot understand. His own native tongue would, through Connection, leak into the local dialect once Aux has finished tuning him.STD:TSM:Ch 6
- flight-feels-like-homeSomething in him relaxes the moment he is in the air with the wind on his face and the ground falling away — he describes himself and the sky as no longer on speaking terms, but admits they were intimate once and he still knows his way around her place.STD:TSM:Ch 6
- reads-scadrianCan read Scadrian script on sight — the symbol etched on Zeal's recovered disc is one he recognises immediately, which lets him identify it as a surveyor's authorisation key rather than the mythical Refuge key Beacon takes it for.STD:TSM:Ch 8
- from-rosharNames Roshar in his own head as the standard against which other storms fall short — confirming the homeworld he had previously only called 'back home'.STD:TSM:Ch 9
- footwear-ruleCarries an unbreakable traveller's rule from years across the cosmere: skimp on shirts if you must, but never on footwear. The boots he is wearing on this planet are still serviceable; the rest of his clothes are not.STD:TSM:Ch 9
- was-wits-apprenticeWas once apprenticed to Wit himself — taken on, by Wit's account, because he had always wanted the answers; he had believed he could tease the world apart, write it down, and catalogue every one of them if he just tried hard enough. He refuses the title 'apprentice' now and disowns the man it described.STD:TSM:Ch 10
- alethkar-arrowsYears ago in Alethkar he and his friends died to arrows in a moment Wit did not lift a finger to prevent — Nomad says he went to Damnation while Wit sat by playing a flute. He still carries the grievance: Wit lived in the same city for years afterward and never came by.STD:TSM:Ch 10
- carried-a-dawnshardHas carried a Dawnshard at some point in his recent past — the burden whose passing was what gave him his Torment and his Investiture-leeching gift. He fears that if the Night Brigade catches him, they will be able to trace the Dawnshard's path back through him to Wit, who is the reason it was given to him at all.STD:TSM:Ch 10
- oaths-endedNames, in his own words to Wit, that 'my oaths ended' — and that it was the ending of those oaths, not any youthful certainty, that taught him destinations really do matter.STD:TSM:Ch 10
- was-thirty-eight-when-ageing-stoppedWas thirty-eight years old when time finally stopped tracking him — his soul bent under the Dawnshard's influence — and by his own planet's reckoning, which uses longer years than most. He looks younger now that the grey is gone from his hair.STD:TSM:Ch 11
- homeworld-has-long-yearsHis homeworld uses longer years than most planets Nomad has visited — long enough that his stated age of thirty-eight at the end of his ageing was already a great deal of life by elsewhere's reckoning.STD:TSM:Ch 11
- touch-does-nothing-on-himCannot have his Investiture drawn out by an ordinary Threnodite touch — Rebeke lays her bare hand on his wrist and gets nothing. He explains it as a question of variety: his Investiture is finicky, of a different sort, and only the bracers were brutal enough to brute-force through his protections.STD:TSM:Ch 13
- first-kill-with-a-spearHis own first kill was with a spear, in formation; the moment passed too fast to register, and that night at stew it had felt like a surreal day of training. He could barely remember the moment itself. He tells Rebeke the story by way of comfort after her first.STD:TSM:Ch 14
- low-skip-capacityIs currently at barely ten percent Skip capacity. He can use Investiture for sustenance instead of food, but at this level would rather not burn the reserve on mere metabolism — and so chokes down Beacon's bland sandwiches.STD:TSM:Ch 15
- trained-by-wit-in-storiesWas trained by his master in the nature of stories and the people who tell them, though his own preference was always for engineering and the nature of Investiture and the mechanisms one could build by manipulating it. The story-training still serves him — he can recognise that the Beacon peoples' stories are bound to be fascinating, and feel the loss of not getting to stay and learn them.STD:TSM:Ch 15
- once-passed-through-royal-handsWas, in the early part of his life, traded between rulers like a coin, before slavery and then camaraderie brought him to flight. He has heard the line "a destiny to unite my people" from too many kings on too many worlds.STD:TSM:Ch 16
- body-shrugs-off-poisonHis Torment-soaked body sheds ordinary poison without effort; even strong liquor barely registers as a faint buzz before it burns off.STD:TSM:Ch 16
- trained-to-deflect-bulletsOnce spent weeks training Auxiliary as a thrown sphere to knock projectiles from the air. He estimates his hit rate at roughly one in ten — a trick that fails most of the time, but is spectacular when it lands.STD:TSM:Ch 16
- was-an-engineer-beforeWas, in an earlier life, a man of engineering and Investiture — comfortable with mathematics and aviation physics. His master pushed ethnography on him too, but engineering was where his heart had been.STD:TSM:Ch 19
- once-the-man-who-fixed-problemsAcknowledges to himself, watching Beacon's elders rise to defy the Cinder King, that what they need is not a soldier but the man he used to be — the one who could fix problems — and reluctantly steps forward to be him again.STD:TSM:Ch 19
- cosmere-travel-optionsKnows the cosmere's space-travel options first hand: the older, slower methods that walk through another dimension for months or years; flight that only exits at fixed points; and the newer faster-anywhere methods that are proportionally more difficult and carry their own terrible side effects — as he can attest from personal experience.STD:TSM:Ch 20
- said-yes-to-hoidHolds himself, ultimately, responsible for what happened to Auxiliary: he said yes to Hoid when Hoid asked him to carry a Dawnshard for safekeeping, and he bonded Auxiliary not knowing what either would lead to. Aux insists he did not know, and salvaged a sliver of his own mind before the rest of his soul was burnt.STD:TSM:Ch 20
- body-adapts-to-first-bond-formHis body, regardless of injury or time, eventually shifts back to how he looked at the moment he first took the Dawnshard from Wit. Hair regrows to that length; stubble returns at the same rate as it once did.STD:TSM:Ch 21
- plan-modify-engines-for-steamPlans to retrofit Beacon's existing sunheart engines to intake water and superheat it into steam for thrust, rather than building new engines from scratch — a slapdash conversion that will let the ships push off something other than thin atmosphere when they cross the mountains.STD:TSM:Ch 21
- adopts-sunlit-as-symbolHas decided to accept the title of Sunlit Man from the Beaconites even though he does not believe he earned it; he tells Rebeke he has seen this happen before, that sometimes a name is not about a person but about a symbol others need, and that this is one of those times.STD:TSM:Ch 22
- does-not-need-to-breatheDoes not strictly need to breathe — a quirk, he tells Solemnity Divine, of his heritage. He prefers to use natural respiration when he can, because it lets him talk and feels normal, but he can take a vacuum without much trouble and has done so for decades. He volunteers to pilot the cluster of pressurised ships himself across the airless heights above the mountains.STD:TSM:Ch 23
- engineering-as-young-exilePicked up what he knows about engineering during the first few years of his exile, when he fell in with a circle of scholars and had a stretch of time to study with them. It is not his trade; he had been thrust onto a soldier's path and chose to keep walking it, but the interest stayed with him.STD:TSM:Ch 23
- cinder-cure-did-not-work-on-himselfLocks up mid-grapple with Elegy the instant he tries to strike her — proof that the sunheart sliver in his arm did nothing for his own Torment. He cuts the chip back out afterward and notes, frustrated, that the local heat-transfer process worked on her cinderheart but not on his soul-scar. Aux suspects the difference is Connection: the locals share power so easily because of the Connection between them and their power, and Nomad is from somewhere else.STD:TSM:Ch 25
- has-stood-among-the-alethiTells Contemplation he has stood among the Alethi himself and called some of them friends — that they stand closer to the sky than any people he has ever known. He frames this as the punchline of a homeland story, not as a biographical claim, but the affection in the telling is real.STD:TSM:Ch 26
- night-brigade-survival-protocolWhen the Night Brigade arrive in orbit over Canticle Nomad briefs Contemplation on how to survive them: comply with every demand, answer every question, do not try to hide anything about him or anything else, do not play dumb. Making it easier for the Brigade to leave the locals alive than to kill them is the only way her people get out of this with their limbs and souls still attached.STD:TSM:Ch 27
- passed-the-dawnshard-onNo longer carries the Dawnshard he once took from Wit — he passed it on at some point, and Nomad reflects that this is why he had naively assumed the Night Brigade would lose interest in him. They have not. With their arts they can kill him, fashion a spike from his soul, and use the spike to find the person he gave the burden to. To them he is a crucial link in a chain — and worth more dead than alive.STD:TSM:Ch 28
- once-turned-himself-in-to-the-brigadeThe first time the Night Brigade caught up to him, Nomad walked right up to them and essentially turned himself in — assuming that, having passed the Dawnshard on, he had nothing left they could want. He was wrong. Auxiliary frames it as the same naivete that had once gotten him conscripted into a Rosharan army hauling siege equipment.STD:TSM:Ch 28
- knows-the-refuge-is-just-an-offworlder-facilityTells Aux privately, on the mountaintop, what the hard part of this contract is. Finding the Refuge and opening it are the easy parts. The hard part is what happens when Rebeke and the rest of Beacon's leadership find that the door the Cinder King has spent his life chasing does not lead to some mythical cavern utopia but to a small offworlder research facility. Nomad notes that he only swore to get the leadership through the door; he never promised to solve Beacon's problems with the Cinder King, or the larger truth that this planet probably has no real refuge from the sun.STD:TSM:Ch 28
- invested-body-makes-a-pressure-bubbleAbove the atmosphere on the test peak, when the air is too thin to breathe, Nomad's body wraps him in an invisible bubble of pressure on its own — a leftover from his old powers. It costs Investiture but is not a major drain, and it keeps him alive in near-vacuum so long as he is willing to spend Skip for it.STD:TSM:Ch 28
- now-lives-to-runWalked into Elegy's question and answered it honestly. He used to live for his friends; then he lived to protect the cosmere for the brief stretch in which he held one of its most dangerous secrets; now he lives to run. He admits, when she presses, that he does not find it satisfying — he is, by his own count, still trying to learn the same lesson he has just given her, and has had no more luck.STD:TSM:Ch 29
- once-burned-aux-as-fuelConfessed silently and entirely off the page until now. In the past, on Roshar, in a moment of power Nomad burned Auxiliary himself as fuel — his body sought any energy it could find, and his friend, made of pure Investiture, was the most convenient source. It was an ignorant act, but it left Aux the fragment of a being he has been ever since. The only piece left intact was Aux's personality and mind. Now, hanging beneath Beacon with sunlight rising and the chain slipping, Aux offers himself again so Nomad can fly. Nomad refuses absolutely.STD:TSM:Ch 30
- cannot-use-sunhearts-to-lance-soulNomad had hoped he could use a sunheart as the device to lance the boil on his soul — the Torment — by pouring some of himself into it the way Beaconites do at the heat prayer. He cannot. The sunhearts do not accept him as one of their own. The kind of rare device that could hack the connection is not available to him on this world.STD:TSM:Ch 33
- body-triages-skin-and-eyes-firstReduced to the dregs of his reserves and burning alive in the great maelstrom, Nomad's body falls back on its old triage. It will spend whatever Investiture it has left to keep his brain and core organs running and his skeleton intact, and let the skin, the nerves, and the eyes go. Burns are not the wounds that kill him; given time and a trickle of Investiture back, his body will rebuild what it abandoned.STD:TSM:Ch 34
- admits-running-has-stopped-helpingForehead against the vault door, Nomad finally lets himself see what he has been doing. He has been telling himself for years that running farther will outpace the Night Brigade and the Torment and whatever else is on his heels. It has not been working. He has been *frozen* — the Beaconite word for the death this culture fears most — somewhere deep in himself for some time, however fast his legs have moved on the outside.STD:TSM:Ch 35
- can-skim-torment-via-kin-sunheartDiscovers in the Cinder King's trophy cabinet that a sunheart rendered from a soul of his own people will accept his heat where Beacon's native sunhearts refused him — the kinsman's Connection is enough for the prayer to take. The siphoning thins the crust the Torment has laid over his soul. It will not burn the scar off, and he does not want it to; a careful skim restores enough fight to put a fist through one of the Charred without locking his arm in place.STD:TSM:Ch 36
- closes-fight-with-bridge-four-saluteFinishes the Chasm Kata he performs on the Dawnchaser's deck by crossing his wrists in front of him and softly mouthing the words *Bridge Four* — a salute his Beaconite audience cannot place, but which carries the whole weight of who he once was.STD:TSM:Ch 37
- learned-by-deliberate-practiceExplains to the new Elegy that he learned to fight by deliberate practice — focusing on one specific thing at a time until it became instinct, which freed his attention to learn the next. Stance first, then grip, then thrust, each turn folding into the body until it ran on its own. His advantage over an ordinary soldier was that being Invested let him survive the wounds that would otherwise have killed the lesson with him; over the decades the lessons accumulated into the man she now sees, a mess but a deeply tutored one.STD:TSM:Ch 38
- accepted-into-beacon-as-zellionAccepted into the people of Beacon by the Greater Good in a landing-circle naming after he saved their last ship from the dawn — given the name Zellion, *One Who Finds*, after the original Lodestar. He tries to argue that words cannot make a stranger into one of them, then accepts; the whole community files past and presses ungloved hands to him, each transferring a sliver of warmth. By Aux's count it is less than one percent of his capacity in total, and an enormous offering by each Beaconite individually; Nomad burns with it like a sun and feels more alive than he has in years.STD:TSM:Ch 39
- topped-up-to-five-percent-by-beaconBefore the assault, the Greater Good pour Investiture from every remaining sunheart into Nomad until he is just over five percent of his Skip capacity — barely above the floor he needs to fight at peak. He remembers, ruefully, when running at fifty or sixty percent was unremarkable, and is more grateful for Beacon's gift than he is wistful for the old margin.STD:TSM:Ch 41
- ten-armor-fragments-from-two-ordersAfter saving Jeffrey Jeffrey from a burning gunship by riding a bomb-blast and hooking back into the Dawnchaser, Zellion sees roughly ten armor fragments suspended around him — an arch over his head, three more on his arms, distinct kinds clearly belonging to two different orders. Almost like old times: the remnants of the oaths he had walked away from, both sets, reasserting themselves at once.STD:TSM:Ch 42
- lectures-beacon-on-air-superiorityWith the Cinder King's elite landed and dug in on the Refuge's door, Zellion scolds the Greater Good for not understanding air superiority — these are people who fly their whole lives but never go to war — and demonstrates: one gunship swings in at angle and rakes the immobile ground position with sunheart fire, dropping shots with gravity from out of rifle range. The line scatters in moments, opening the patch of mud for Beacon's landing.STD:TSM:Ch 43
- lies-to-timetellers-about-oaths-and-perpendicularityPressed by the TimeTeller researchers, Zellion denies having spoken any oaths and claims he was shoved onto Canticle by a temporary perpendicularity via Shadesmar. He also pretends not to speak Malwish — and is grateful that his old Azish has been overwritten by the local tongue, so his ignorance of *that* one is at least honest.STD:TSM:Ch 44
- tries-his-old-oaths-and-nothing-happensWatching Beacon surrender on a wall monitor, Nomad whispers the old words of his oaths. Nothing happens. Auxiliary is shocked — he had thought the wish itself would suffice — but Nomad knows better: he walked away from those oaths deliberately, and there are consequences for that, no matter how much he might now want them back.STD:TSM:Ch 45
- cannot-explain-why-he-abandoned-his-oathsPressed by Auxiliary for the first time about *why* he walked away from his oaths after leaving Roshar, Nomad finally answers, after one last attempt to dodge: he does not know. He cannot explain the mindset, cannot justify it, looks back on it and feels like the choice was unlike him; but he made it, in the heat of a moment, with no good reason — and the consequences stand. Humans, he tells the slow-to-change Auxiliary, are sometimes simply inconsistent.STD:TSM:Ch 45
- recognized-by-timeteller-researcher-as-night-brigade-bountyA TimeTeller researcher with a ponytail puts together a Rosharan arcanist with dark skin, the armor fragments briefly visible at his shoulders, and the Night Brigade ship in orbit — and announces that there is a bounty on his head big enough to buy a small planet. The bluff is over; the room turns on him.STD:TSM:Ch 45
- accepts-the-sunlit-man-title-from-contemplationInside the sealing dome, Contemplation thanks him by name and adds the title she had once tried to give him — Sunlit Man — and this time he does not push it away. He had told them earlier the title belonged to someone better than he was; having now come back for them by choice, he lets it stand.STD:TSM:Ch 47
- drained-the-cinder-king-and-skipped-off-canticleUsed his Torment in reverse — improvising a prayer for the dying in place of the prayer for the dead — to pull the Cinder King's long-hoarded reserve of Investiture into himself in seconds. The take is more than enough: well over a hundred percent Skip capacity, by his own count. As the dawn ignites his opponent he triggers the Skip and leaves Canticle for the next world.STD:TSM:Ch 52
- cannot-return-to-canticleForced into permanent silence about Canticle: any place Zellion visits twice will tell the Night Brigade it mattered to him, and the people there will become targets. He does not learn what happened to Rebeke, Elegy, the Greater Good, or any of Beacon; he hopes a short stay was enough to keep his attachment off the Brigade's radar. His rule of leaving each world before he is missed has become a rule of leaving each world before he is wanted again.STD:TSM:Epilogue
- named-commander-of-the-windrunnersAt Rlain's spren-bonding party, Kaladin names Sigzil the new Commander of the Windrunners over Sigzil's protest. Skar is bound to the new-recruit training; Sigzil has the meetings-with-monarchs poise, the immaculate battle plans, the daily concern for each soldier, and reports even Ka cannot keep pace with. Sigzil accepts.SA:WaT:Ch 12
- commands-shattered-plains-defenceWith Kaladin gone to Shinovar and the Windrunners the largest order of Radiant soldiers, Dalinar places Sigzil in field command of the Shattered Plains defence against the all-Fused strike force, with the Stormwall in reserve.SA:WaT:Ch 20
- narak-defence-uses-engineered-failure-pointsSigzil's defence of Narak spreads coalition troops across four walled plateaus rather than two and deliberately under-protects Narak Four as an *engineered failure point*, on the engineering principle that you put the breakage where you can afford it. The plan only has to hold six days; the goal is to bait the enemy into spending their assault on a plateau the coalition can lose, sparing Prime and Two (whose loss would surrender the entire region or the Oathgate lifeline).SA:WaT:Ch 47
- narak-four-deliberate-weak-pointAs commander of the Windrunner defense of Narak, Sigzil designates Narak Four — the plateau north of the Narak Two Oathgate — his intentional weak point, gambling that the enemy will spend resources taking ground he can afford to lose so the core plateaus survive the five days of Dalinar's contract.SA:WaT:Ch 56
- loses-first-squire-detiSigzil cradles his squire Deti as the boy dies during the fall of Narak Four — his first loss as commander. Forcing himself to grieve later and lead now, he begins consciously borrowing the model Kaladin left him: *blame the enemy, not the captain, for soldiers lost in soldiers' work.*SA:WaT:Ch 74
- comes-into-his-command-on-the-plainsOn the wall above Narak Prime, in the wake of his trap-feint to draw Odium's armies at Narak Three and his quiet pep talk with Leyten, Sigzil realises that here — beneath red lightning, on a plateau full of chasms he has claimed — he is finally the man he always wanted to be. Training with Master Hoid and learning under Kaladin had never done it for him; command did.SA:WaT:Ch 78
- narak-three-feint-takes-the-enemyUnder the Everstorm over Narak Prime, Sigzil sees the Focused Ones pivot and the singer army with them charge toward Narak Three and the Lightweaver-faked gemstone cache he and Stargyle planted there — the feint he proposed at the map table takes the enemy whole.SA:WaT:Ch 81
- gives-up-narak-three-on-the-planOn the fifth day of the defence, Sigzil springs the trap he laid: Yelig-nar is dropped into the middle of Narak Three, drawn down on a pyre of defenders, then killed; Sigzil gives the order, the Stonewards drop the bridge into the chasm, and the plateau is abandoned in good order to the singers, who never realise the cached gemstones they capture are spent.SA:WaT:Ch 88
- knows-the-name-of-his-killer-not-this-fusedPinned on the wall by a Husked One threatening to kill him as bait for the Stormblessed, Sigzil answers that he has heard the name of his killer screamed on the lips of a dying man — and it is not this one. He kicks the Fused off and breaks free.SA:WaT:Ch 103
- receives-venlis-offer-and-finds-the-piece-he-neededOut of Stormlight, on the edge of ordering the retreat, Sigzil receives word from Ka that Venli — *the defector, the friend of Rlain* — has made contact with an offer. Her literal offer of troops will not turn the battle. The fact of it, slotted into the plan he has been building all day, gives him the piece he was missing.SA:WaT:Ch 103
- sigzil-renounces-windrunner-oaths-to-save-vientaPinned and broken-spined under Moash on Narak Prime, with Moash about to drive an anti-Light knife into Vienta, Sigzil screams aloud that he renounces his oaths and is no Radiant — and means it. The bond breaks, Vienta vanishes as the knife strikes stone, and a Shardblade clangs down beside him. The renunciation leaves his soul, in his own words, hollow as a grand imperial hallway.SA:WaT:Ch 118
- bears-the-dawnshardWith Retribution moments from manifesting in Urithiru and about to vaporize Wit for the threat he poses, Wit gives the Dawnshard he had been hiding on Roshar to his former apprentice — explicitly because Sigzil is no longer a Radiant, and the enemy will overlook him. The ancient power settles into him with a single all-overwhelming directive — *Exist* — and a small clockwork hourglass Wit sticks to him drops him through into Shadesmar as Wit is vaporized above him.SA:WaT:Ch 146
- dawnshard-sustains-and-changes-himThe Dawnshard he bears for Wit sustains Sigzil without sleep or sufficient water, lets him perceive the world in new ways — and is beginning to change his body in ways he tries not to fear.SA:WaT:Ch 147
Events
- SA:WoK:Ch 14 Demands to know what they would do instead of sleeping
- SA:WoK:Ch 40 Chooses to sit on the far side of the fire from Kaladin
- SA:WoK:Ch 43 Joins with a flat statement of his preference for an Alethi blade over slavery
- SA:WoK:Ch 66 In Bridge Four; turns east with Kaladin
- SA:WaT:Ch 105 Meets the singer Radiant in his Narak command post — disbelieving until she walks in out of the rock — lays out his half-plan, and accepts her revision when she says it will need Jasnah.
- SA:WoR:Ch 9 Has come into the chasms to prepare to measure Kaladin's Surgebinding; sends Rock to fetch Kaladin when ready.
- SA:WoR:Ch 31 Notes that the borrowed bridgemen have been changed by their days on patrol and reminds Kaladin that a highstorm is due tonight.
- SA:WoR:Ch 41 Joins Kaladin in the chasms to puzzle through the assassin's Surgebinding and the cut railing.
- SA:WoR:Ch 46 Pays a market crier for the world news, eats chouta with mild misgiving, and grows visibly uneasy when Rock describes the white-haired god he met.
- SA:WoR:Ch 56 Watches Amaram from the arena perimeter with Kaladin, confirms Amaram has displayed no Surgebinding abilities, and presses Kaladin to consider revealing his own Radiant powers in support of Dalinar's announcement.
- SA:WoR:Ch 71 Sits the chasm watch with Teft, offering games of michim and a quiet ear, and gently coaxes the Envisager story out of him.
- SA:WoR:Ch 87 Explains Dalinar's pardon of Rlain to Kaladin, walks him through how to work the Oathgate mechanism, and tells him he is going to be at the centre of a lot of what comes next.
- STD:TSM:Ch 43 Non-POV in this chapter — seen and heard from Elegy's perspective as "the killer" before he descends into the Refuge.
- STD:TSM:Ch 48 Vaults up over Union's rim in his ember-coloured armour, asks if Elegy is all right, then carves a path through the Charred toward the centre of the city — punching them clear off the deck, using them as weapons against each other — until accumulated cracks burst his shoulder plate, the armour disintegrates off him, and he is left with only a fallen Charred's machete.
Relations
- relatedBridge Four — Nomad caps his fight on the Dawnchaser with a soundless Bridge Four salute, anchoring himself to the old comradeship even on a planet that cannot recognise the words. STD:TSM:Ch 37
