Oathgates
Ancient Soulcast portals — and, in the storm that closed the war on the Plains, the only way out. Each Oathgate is itself an enormous fabrial: a ringed plateau whose centre is a domed chamber lined with ten gem-fed lamps and a steel keyhole that flows to fit any Shardblade slotted into it. Shallan discovers that ordinary Shardblades will not turn the lock — only a Knight Radiant's living spren-Blade. When Pattern turns the inner wall from the depiction of Natanatan halfway around to the depiction of Urithiru, the entire plateau and everyone on it is moved instantly to the matching plateau in a ring of ten outside Urithiru's gate. SA:WoR:Ch 86
Ten ancient devices of instantaneous travel, one in each of the ten capitals of the Epoch Kingdoms, that together linked the Epoch Kingdoms to Urithiru and its conference chamber of ten thrones. Long treated as folklore by the Vorin scholarly mainstream; Jasnah and Shallan read the old maps as evidence the gates were real. SA:WoR:Ch 60 superseded at SA:WoR:Ch 86
Folkloric devices of instantaneous travel mentioned repeatedly in pre-Recreance tales, including the Alezarv story in Among the Darkeyed. Modern scholars treat them as fable. SA:WoK:Ch 39 superseded at SA:WoR:Ch 60
Known facts
- dais-survived-as-circular-plateauShallan recognises that the Oathgate near Stormseat sat on a raised stone dais — and that when the Plains shattered around it, the break ran the dais's outline, leaving it as the only perfectly circular plateau at the heart of the Plains.SA:WoR:Ch 83
- keyhole-fits-a-shardbladeInside the central mound on the dais, Shallan finds a steel ten-pointed star with a thin slot in its centre. The metal cannot be cut by a Shardblade — *made of the same stuff* — and the slot reshapes itself to match a Blade slid into it. The Oathgate door is unlocked but not yet turned.SA:WoR:Ch 84
- the-plateau-itself-is-the-portalWhen Shallan turns the Oathgate keyhole at the centre of the Plains, the entire round plateau and every soldier on it vanishes from the Plains and appears in the matching ring at Urithiru. The plateau itself was the portal, not a chamber on it.SA:WoR:Ch 86
- oathgate-spren-announce-end-of-stewardshipTransferring to Azimir, Adolin hears the overlapping voices of the Oathgate spren announce that *the time has at last come for our stewardship to end* — when their new allies arrive they will stop aiding humans, and a transformation approaches. Azimir's Oathgate will be unusable for transfers shortly after the final crossing.SA:WaT:Ch 34
