Durn
A Urteau thief lord who works as Spook's underworld informant — disguising himself as a ragged beggar with a false limp and ragged hair, though Spook can smell soap and fine wine on him. He has a master street performer's sense of rhythm. Durn drums out complex patterns on the ground while reporting and has favored news of the Citizen's executions to feed Spook's watch on the regime. Known facts
- offers-urteau-underworld-against-quellionDurn offers Spook the active support of what remains of the Urteau underworld in any move against Quellion. The Citizen has been ruinous for business — Venture-vintage wine sold at a fraction of a clip, smuggling chains choked back to a trickle — and Durn judges the network smaller than it once was, but capable of doing surprising damage if it is pointed correctly.MB1:HoA:Ch 35
- knows-spook-by-tin-and-eyesDurn tells Spook he was never as anonymous as he assumed. A Tineye arriving in Urteau with apparently bottomless funds was not hard to identify, particularly with Spook's now-noticeable eyes; Durn has been seeding rumours that Quellion killed one of the Survivor's own crew, because the city loves the Survivor and anyone the Citizen uses his name against, the city will eventually turn on.MB1:HoA:Ch 35
Events
- MB1:HoA:Ch 16 Sits beside Spook in the Marketpit streetslot in beggar's guise, drumming complex rhythms on the ground, walks him to the execution then hands him the night's tip — "count the skulls" — and slips away into the crowd before the Citizen's speech.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 35 Plays a practice chips game with marked cards in his canal-wall hollow when Spook kicks down the door; admits to seeding Spook's name into Urteau taverns and offers the underworld's support against Quellion.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 53 Sets his price for the canal coup — trade contracts and a title — and walks Spook from bar to bar through the Harrows and the streetslots, building the Survivor of the Flames into a public figure.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 58 Meets Spook in a side streetslot on the way to the rally, warns him the city is unsettled and his Harrows men are stretched, then peels off to set the planned distraction at the back of the crowd.
