Lestibournes
also known as Spook
Clubs's thin, awkward teenage nephew. Speaks in an Eastern street slang that most of the crew has to mentally translate. Tags along at Clubs's side, and his long name leaves Kelsier casting around for a shorter one. MB1:TFE:Ch 6
Known facts
- flares-tin-constantly-since-clubs-deathSpook has flared tin without let-up for a year — since Clubs's death in Luthadel — and the constant burn has permanently sharpened his senses far beyond an ordinary Tineye's reach. He sees by starlight as though by day; mists, to his eyes, are thin and weak. He must wear cloth across his eyes during real daylight; pebbles through his bootsoles feel like knife points; he wears a thick cloak even on a spring evening because the air seems freezing. He is aware the changes may be dangerous, and chooses to push them anyway because the world is ending and he wants to be useful.MB1:HoA:Ch 14
- sent-to-urteau-by-elend-vinElend and Vin sent Spook to Urteau alone to gather what he could about the new skaa government and its ruler, the Citizen Quellion. He files his reports back to Luthadel in steel-inscribed messages. The work is, in part, his own atonement for fleeing Luthadel during the siege and leaving his uncle Clubs to die there.MB1:HoA:Ch 14
- wears-blindfold-and-clear-spectacles-in-daylightTo function in Urteau's hours of mistless daylight without being blinded by his savant senses, Spook commissions spectacles set with plain glass and wears them under a dark cloth tied tightly across his face. The cloth blocks enough light to keep him from being blinded; the glass keeps him from having to close his eyes; his enhanced sight filters out the cloth the way it filters out mist.MB1:HoA:Ch 16
- fights-with-dueling-cane-and-tin-sensesSpook is not a Mistborn, but in close-quarters combat his savant-grade tin flare lets him read attacks before they land — breath of a swing, shift of a footfall, the closeness of a heartbeat — and his uncle Clubs long ago made Ham drill him to fight, so he carries a hardwood dueling cane as his usual weapon. He compares the awareness to burning atium.MB1:HoA:Ch 16
- snaps-as-pewter-mistingBleeding from a sword wound, out of tin, and dying inside a burning Urteau mansion, Spook drinks a vial taken from a dead nobleman's desk on instruction and discovers an unexpected new metal reserve within himself. Burning it floods him with the strength of pewter — making him, beyond his lifelong Tineye gift, a Pewterarm as well. The shock of dying in the fire is the trigger he had never previously hit hard enough to Snap on the second metal.MB1:HoA:Ch 19
- bought-by-clubs-from-his-own-villageSpook was born in the eastern lands to skaa miners. He Snapped as a Tineye young, and the people of his village — terrified that the Inquisitors would notice — decided to kill him for it; his own father had a boot on his neck when Clubs, his mother's brother, walked in with a bag of copper coins, bought him outright, and took him to Luthadel.MB1:HoA:Ch 23
- chose-his-own-name-i-have-been-abandonedOn the road out of his village, after Clubs had bought him from his parents, the boy chose his own new name: Lestibournes — eastern street slang for *I have been abandoned*. Kelsier would later find it too long to say and rename him Spook; he never asked whether Clubs understood the slang behind the original.MB1:HoA:Ch 23
- has-two-allomantic-powers-tin-and-pewterSpook is something Allomantic theory says should not exist: a person with two basic powers but not all sixteen. His native tin sense as a Tineye is now joined by pewter alone, granted in the same encounter at the Marketpit fire that left him otherwise alive. He has tried the other Misting metals and felt nothing.MB1:HoA:Ch 26
- hears-kelsiers-voice-without-the-apparitionAfter the visitation at the Marketpit, Spook continues to hear Kelsier's voice — a private, audible voice, with no apparition — speaking to him in private moments, telling him to leave the sword-fragment in his shoulder as a sign of survival, and that he can be great. No one nearby ever hears it.MB1:HoA:Ch 26
- wears-a-blindfold-against-his-savant-overloadSince Snapping into pewter Spook's tin sense has sharpened past comfort — his eyes are so sensitive that he now keeps a thick cloth bandage tied across them in daylight and still moves with ease, the cloth being just light enough to see through. Breeze dismisses it as a quirk; Sazed notices the strain and that Spook is also visibly stronger than he was.MB1:HoA:Ch 29
- chooses-to-become-kelsier-shaped-rescuerConfronted with a Durn gambler begging him to save the man's seven-year-old sister Mailey from one of Quellion's burnings, Spook hesitates only long enough to remember what he is now. He cannot do nothing the way the old Spook would have done nothing; he can act in the shape Kelsier would have acted. He turns the appeal into a transaction — ten men, gathered tonight, in exchange for Mailey — and starts the operation immediately.MB1:HoA:Ch 35
- pewter-savant-physical-feats-without-fatigueContinuously flaring pewter, Spook now moves with grace and force he had only ever envied. He never tires. He leaps the wall of a streetslot twenty feet down without breaking himself, kicks in Durn's hinged-and-barred door with one boot, and is as startled as the guards at how hard the door breaks — he does not yet have the reflex to judge his own strength.MB1:HoA:Ch 35
- counts-the-skulls-after-an-executionActing on Durn's cryptic tip to count the skulls, Spook hires Franson and a small crew to sift the burned ruins of one of Quellion's execution houses over three nights. They recover nine skulls. Ten people were sent in. The missing tenth tells Spook that Quellion's burnings are survivable — there is a way out — and is the seed of his rescue plan for Mailey.MB1:HoA:Ch 38
- publicly-becomes-the-survivor-of-the-flamesSpook cements the Survivor of the Flames rumour in person at the Marketpit burning. He cuts down the squad of soldiers the Citizen had sent to extract a hidden Allomancer through the bolt-hole, bars the secret door so the soldiers burn with the building, carries the surviving condemned skaa out through the basement passage, and walks the last one — a coughing child — out through the burning roof himself. He lands on the street in front of the crowd, cloak still smouldering, blindfold still on, and meets the Citizen's eyes in challenge before Allrianne's Riot covers his escape.MB1:HoA:Ch 41
- takes-charge-of-the-urteau-operationReturning bloodied to the Canton cavern after his Marketpit kill and his confrontation with Beldre, Spook takes operational command of Elend's Urteau team from Sazed — issuing instructions to Breeze to seed rumours that Quellion secretly uses Allomancers, and tasking Sazed to use his copperminds to engineer the canals' water back into Urteau's streets. Sazed, who has been letting himself drift, lets the boy lead.MB1:HoA:Ch 46
- takes-beldre-hostage-to-fracture-quellions-legitimacyWhen Beldre comes to plead privately for her brother's life, Spook decides on the spot not to let her leave. He has Breeze start the rumour that the Citizen's own sister has defected, and uses the fact that she slipped past her guards on the way in — a witnessed defection — as confirmation. The intent is to provoke Quellion into an attack on the fortified Canton grounds, which he cannot win.MB1:HoA:Ch 49
- promises-beldre-he-will-try-to-spare-quellion-and-the-citySitting with Beldre at the cavern's underground lake, Spook tells her he will not use her as a hostage to threaten Quellion — threats are hollow if you would not carry them out — and that she will, he believes, be safer with him than back in her brother's palace. At her plea he promises to try to save Quellion from his own extremism, and to save Urteau itself when the city changes hands.MB1:HoA:Ch 53
- durn-and-spook-set-the-canal-flood-plan-against-the-harrowsIn a back room of Durn's inn, Spook and Durn settle the terms for the coup: Durn gets primary trade contracts on all the canals and a title from Elend, and in return Durn commits to dam the mouth of the Harrows before Spook floods Urteau's dry canals at evening. Durn confirms he has the old lock system that was stripped from the Harrows when they were new, and can refit it in time. Spook warns him that the beggar population in the slums dies if the dam fails.MB1:HoA:Ch 53
- tells-sazed-what-faith-meansAsked by Sazed what faith is good for in a dying world, Spook offers — to his own surprise — that faith means trusting someone is watching, and that there will always be a way. It is the first answer either of them has heard that they want to keep.MB1:HoA:Ch 56
- bronze-shard-in-his-chest-was-rurinis-handleSpook realises on the rally stage that the Kelsier voice he has been hearing since the market fight is not the Survivor at all but Ruin, reaching him through the broken bronze sword shard left embedded in his own chest. He cuts the shard out with a glass dagger, casts it across the stage, and the voice is gone — along with his pewter and, he realises only later, the savant edge he had been calling his.MB1:HoA:Ch 58
- earns-the-name-survivor-of-the-flamesBurned, pewter-less, and with his arms a ruin he no longer dares to look at, Spook runs into the burning Ministry building above the cavern — extinguishing his tin so the heat cannot stop him — and throws the lever on Sazed's flood mechanism, sending the cache reservoir up into the canals to put out the burning of Urteau. The name Survivor of the Flames becomes literally his.MB1:HoA:Ch 58
- wakes-bandaged-and-immobile-but-aliveDays after the Urteau burnings, Spook wakes in bandages and casts that hold every part of him still except the fingers of his left hand. He had not expected to be alive. The boy who once flinched at every loud sound has come out of fire with burns that, Breeze tells him, are not as bad as they look — and with the skaa of Urteau calling him their Survivor of the Flames in earnest.MB1:HoA:Ch 64
- dictates-the-warning-on-steel-so-ruin-cannot-read-itRealising that whatever the voice in his chest could overhear can also overhear anything he speaks aloud, Spook has Goradel beat a thin sheet of steel and bring it back with a scriber. The warning to Vin is to be scratched into the metal; he will not say it.MB1:HoA:Ch 64
- healed-and-made-mistborn-by-harmony-as-kelsiers-parting-giftSazed heals the damage Spook did to his own body flaring tin in Urteau and remakes him as a Mistborn — a request from Kelsier, the note explains, a parting gift from the man who once led the crew. Spook is left in the meadow as the natural leader of the new age, charged with watching over the survivors.MB1:HoA:Epilogue
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 6 First appearance; fetches Vin to the meeting and sits beside Clubs throughout.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 10 Whispers Vin the gossip on Marsh's abandoned nickname, Ironeyes.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 15 Comes flying down the stairs in the rain to warn that someone is at the back door — a tall figure in robes — and braces the crew for an Inquisitor who turns out to be Sazed.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 16 Sits at Vin's bedside as she wakes, fetches her water, and tells her Kelsier has renamed him Spook.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 22 Tracks Vin down in Renoux's garden, blushes red, presses a pink-and-white lace handkerchief into her hand, and bolts before she can answer. By Luthadel custom it is the gift a young noble gives a lady he means to court in earnest.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 24 Fetches Breeze his wine on cue, exchanges a long string of Eastern Street dialect with Kelsier and Ham purely to bait Breeze into exasperation, and ducks Vin's eye for the entire evening.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Bursts in from the front of the shop with the news that the bells are ringing for a gathering at Fountain Square.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Feels the Lord Ruler's Soothing pulling at him from the rooftop and has to ask Clubs for the third time whether his copper is on; throws up over the back side of the roof when the killings begin.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 31 Tries (and fails) to keep up with Ham's banter around the table, and blushes furiously when Vin walks in in her undergarments.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 32 Crouched on the rooftop above Clubs's shop on early-evening watch when Vin joins him; passes on a Tineye's rule about choosing what to ignore and accepts that she still loves Elend.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 In the lead prison cart beside Renoux when the Ministry's raid arrives at the crossroads.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 35 On the roof with the crew, back from Renoux's convoy.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 35 Sent off by Dox to fetch the apprentices for messenger runs once the orders are read.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 29 Joins the embassy in disguise, then leads it into the Canton of Inquisition building and down to the cache.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 31 Argues for assassinating Quellion the way Kelsier killed the Lord Ruler; pushes back against the others' caution.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 31 Joins Sazed on the bank of the underground lake, removes his blindfold and one of the lanterns, presses him on religion and on Kelsier watching over the crew, then suggests Sazed may be acting on what Tindwyl would have wanted.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 41 Lands on the street with the rescued child in his arms, cloak smouldering, eyes bandaged, and stares down Quellion before vanishing down an alley.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 46 Returns to the cavern blood-spattered and with the bottom of his cloak charred through, eyes uncovered, voice hard. Issues orders to Breeze and Sazed for the operation against Quellion; when Sazed presses him on how he survived the leap, he asks only for trust.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 49 Walks over from the lake's edge to join Sazed and Breeze; visibly exhausted but refusing to sleep, eyes still bandaged with the strange spectacle bulge underneath. Tells them how Quellion originally took Urteau by leading the people into the killing mists, and lets slip that the nobility were apparently immune to the mistsickness.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 49 Paces during the interview, dueling canes strapped to his belt, then announces he will keep Beldre and use her arrival as a public defection to bait Quellion into a futile attack. Refuses to be moved by her arguments.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 62 Unconscious in his sickbed under Sazed's bandages, Beldre at his side; Sazed confirms the boy is not a Thug by giving him pewter to no effect.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 73 Bursts into Breeze's room in casts, half-collapsed against the frame, ordering Urteau evacuated into the storage cavern.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 6 Returns to Luthadel in a stolen guard uniform and a fake beard, having slipped into the city ahead of Dockson; reports that the planted rumors of the Lord Ruler's atium being in Luthadel have come back stronger, and the warlords' attention is being deliberately turned on Elend.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 11 Arrives at the gate last, snickers at Breeze's account of poisoning Cett's water supply, and slips back into his Eastern street slang when Breeze prods him.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 13 Spends the meeting taking Ham for his month's earnings at stones; otherwise quiet, peripheral, fetches Breeze's wine when asked.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 23 Perches on a serving table apart from the council, swings his legs over the side, pilfers tidbits from the working cooks, and flirts unsuccessfully with a drowsy kitchen girl.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 25 Drafted as packman in his palace-guard uniform (jacket undone, trousers loose), trails the party out to Kenton Street in a sulk; once at the shop, follows Allrianne around with a lively step until she fails to get his attention against Vin's blue gown. Earlier in the carriage Vin confirms on bronze that he is not the impostor.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 27 Among the crew waiting at Tin Gate, jokes that he was looking forward to taking the throne Elend is now keeping after all.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 28 Leans his chair back on two legs at the meeting and reports that he could not get Sazed to wake for it.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 31 Among the Survivor's crew arrayed behind Elend when he enters the Assembly chamber.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Acts as Elend's coachman for the trip to Keep Hasting, later standing near the stairwell with his Tineye ears on the dinner.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Stationed near the stairwell of the Keep Hasting dining hall with his Tineye hearing extended.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 44 Lounges in Elend's study, tosses a koloss coin onto the table after scraping the paint off, and confirms — both as an analyst and as a grieving mourner of Kelsier — that Jastes's money is fake.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 49 Arrives in uniform with saddlebags and a bag of pewter dust for Vin; rides scout on the way out the Tin Gate.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 50 Tends the horses and the cookfire; confesses to Elend that he feels useless next to Vin and reports glimpses of someone following them down the road.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 Returns from morning scout to report five men camped behind them, sits with Vin at the firepit, and confesses he feels useless next to a Mistborn and calls himself a coward — the first hint of what his uncle told him before they left the city.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 Stands at Elend's side during the confrontation; after Jastes is dead, confesses that his uncle had told him Straff would pull back and let the koloss attack, and that Sazed sent them away knowing it. He calls himself a coward for keeping the secret.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 56 Scouts ahead and back through the mist for Elend; identifies the watcher in the trees as only a mistwraith.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 56 Stands with Elend in the mist outside the camp, complaining the Terrismen's fires hurt his eyes; voices the fear that Luthadel has also fallen.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Spots the broken gates and burying crews from the trees and reads Elend's own flag on the gate before they slip in with the skaa line.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Walks with Elend in the growing crowd, enjoying the attention.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Sprints ahead down the cavern floor and discovers the rank on rank of shelved canned food the Lord Ruler set aside there.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Confused on the landing as Sazed runs past him with no answer to his questions.
Relations
- relatedVin — Spook gives Vin a lace handkerchief in the Renoux garden — the formal first gesture of a noble courtship, however little either of them belongs to the nobility. MB1:TFE:Ch 22
