Hijo
also known as spirits, primal spirits
The primal spirits of Torio, called forth by a yoki-hijo from the warm stone of a place of ritual. They cannot be commanded by just anyone; they respond to creativity — order from chaos, beauty from raw materials, something from nothing — and once persuaded they can split into a paired pair of statues that take a working physical form (a light, a flyer, a lifter). Known facts
- bind-for-yearsA bound hijo typically holds its working form for between five and ten years, with effectiveness waning toward the end. The more spirits a yoki-hijo binds in a single session, the longer they all tend to last.STD:YNP:Ch 4
- split-into-pairOnce persuaded by a yoki-hijo, a hijo splits in two to take its working shape — paired statues whose features mirror each other and which together produce a tool the supplicant has asked for: a light, a repelling pair, a hovering flyer with a paddle of control, a saw, and so on. Almost anything can be made from one if the request is properly shaped.STD:YNP:Ch 4
- newly-summoned-can-speakNewly summoned spirits can still answer questions from the yoki-hijo who calls them; once a spirit has been formed and dedicated to a service it can no longer speak — or chooses not to.STD:YNP:Ch 13
- can-vocalise-when-capturedWhen a spirit is forcibly pulled into the scholars' device mid-summons it can vibrate a few words to its yoki-hijo — heard by Yumi and, through her, by Painter. The plea: *Please. Freedom. Please. Stop the machine.*STD:YNP:Ch 31
