Yumi
A nineteen-year-old yoki-hijo of Torio — and, the scholars reveal, one of the *rogue spirits* their machine was rebuilt to recapture. The town she has been visiting is not a town at all but a stage of nightmares in human masks; she herself is not what she has thought. When the scholars sever her tether to Painter she begins to distort like the others — less than they do — and the Connection to him, anchored from outside, was the only thing keeping her memories from being rewritten. STD:YNP:Ch 34
A nineteen-year-old yoki-hijo of Torio, marked at her birth by a falling star and taken from her parents to be raised to her calling. Her every day is structured around ritual — ritual eating, ritual bathing, ritual dressing, ritual prayer — and her duty is to summon and bind the primal hijo for the towns she visits. Devout, decorous, and quietly aching for a single day in which she might be ordinary. STD:YNP:Ch 2 superseded at STD:YNP:Ch 34
Known facts
- chosen-by-starChosen as a yoki-hijo at birth, when a falling star marked the sky over her — the omen that taken her from her parents to be raised to her calling.STD:YNP:Ch 2
- wants-festivalPrivately wishes to spend the next Festival of Reveals in Torio City dressed as an ordinary person, for one day — a longing she cannot quite voice aloud to Liyun, who reframes it as a wish to spend the day in pious gratitude.STD:YNP:Ch 2
- thirty-seven-spiritsSummoned thirty-seven hijo in a single session at a small Torish village, in service of an elaborate spiral sculpture worked through the artist's sequence. Most yoki-hijo are lucky to summon six; her own previous record was twenty.STD:YNP:Ch 4
- asked-for-boon-by-spiritsOn the night after her thirty-seven-spirit summoning, a distant spirit reaches her mind in her wagon and — uniquely in her experience — answers her thoughts directly. It offers her a boon, which she refuses out of duty, and then asks her for one in return: to help free it and its kind, who are trapped in some terrible existence. She accepts, vowing to do whatever she can, and immediately blacks out.STD:YNP:Ch 6
- incorporeal-after-swapAfter the trade, she persists as an incorporeal figure only Painter can see — her hands pass through her own blankets, her attendants walk straight through her, and she feels no heat from the Torio stone she has walked on her whole life. She can speak with Painter, but not directly with anyone else.STD:YNP:Ch 8
- connection-touch-with-painterAlthough her ghost-self passes through everything else on Torio, touching Painter produces a startling, electric Connection — cold then a wash of overwhelming warmth that thrums through her like contact with a raw hion line. She is also tethered: she cannot move more than roughly a yard from him before being yanked back.STD:YNP:Ch 9
- explains-everyone-serves-herShe explains to Painter the inversion at the heart of a yoki-hijo's life: everyone serves her so that she may serve the world. The people are deeply invested in freeing her from worldly concerns so she can give her whole attention to calling the hijo and binding them to the service of Torio.STD:YNP:Ch 9
- claims-to-be-painters-sisterTo explain her presence in Nikaro's apartment to the foreman and to Akane, she introduces herself as his visiting sister Yumi — a deliberate untruth that she expects the spirits to strike her down for, and which they do not.STD:YNP:Ch 11
- commanding-in-her-roleFurious and forced to direct Painter through her duties, she becomes a commanding figure who out-looms Liyun herself — a presence the timid girl of the previous day had completely concealed.STD:YNP:Ch 12
- trained-to-relentless-solemnityTells Painter she was raised under deliberate, unyielding conditioning toward solemnity — the wish for levity and individuality drained from her like pus from a boil — because the yoki-hijo cannot fail, since Torio's farming depends on her.STD:YNP:Ch 13
- taken-from-parents-as-babyWas chosen by the spirits as a baby, taken from her parents, and raised entirely by the wardens for her singular purpose — never permitted a childhood, since a yoki-hijo is neither a child nor an adult but a manifestation of the spirits' will.STD:YNP:Ch 14
- first-choice-she-has-madePicks out and pays for — through Akane, on Nikaro's tab — three outfits including the blue dress, her first possessions and the first decision she remembers having made just for herself in her entire life.STD:YNP:Ch 15
- considers-herself-a-conceptTells Painter outright that she is not a person but a concept — a thing owned by society, who would do her job better as a machine — and that the small freedoms she has tasted in his world are dangerous because she still has to go back.STD:YNP:Ch 16
- rewrites-body-via-spiritual-aspectDesign identifies that Yumi carries a remarkably strong Spiritual aspect, highly Invested in some strange way — the reason she has been able to rewrite Painter's body with her own soul, shrinking the bones and reshaping the muscles to match her sense of self. Each swap, Design adds, should cost a little less energy as the body fights her less.STD:YNP:Ch 17
- drew-first-spirit-after-two-weeks-trainingTells Painter her own first spirit came to her after only two weeks of training as a child — but it then took another four months for the second, and years before she could summon them every time. The early successes, she warns him, are not consistency.STD:YNP:Ch 20
- averages-twelve-spirits-per-sessionYumi averages around twelve spirits summoned per session — exceptional, given that most current yoki-hijo draw only five or six and Hwanji's reformist former mistress Dwookim averaged about ten. The figure makes her, by Hwanji's reckoning, the strongest of the fourteen.STD:YNP:Ch 22
- ghost-passes-through-walls-by-not-thinkingIn ghost form Yumi passes through solid matter only when she does not concentrate on it — the same rule Design explained for picking things up, run the other way. When she politely petitions a tent wall in respect for its spirit it pushes her back; closing her eyes and stepping forward without thinking, she walks straight through.STD:YNP:Ch 23
- realises-she-owns-nothing-and-never-willWalking home from the carnival, Yumi tells Painter that she has realised she owns nothing — and never will. Even the dress she loves will stay behind when the spirits end the swap and she wakes up in her own body again. She paints the view from the ride as a memento and gives it to him to remember her by.STD:YNP:Ch 28
- stacking-rocks-mid-attack-makes-nightmare-hesitateBleeding out her essence, Yumi reaches for a chunk of torn concrete and stacks it on the one beside it — the only thing her dying hands know how to do — and the stable nightmare hesitates, stops feeding, and stares at the stones as if something in it *remembers*.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- invested-at-returned-or-elantrian-levelDesign's borrowed Investiture-reading device confirms Yumi is Invested far beyond a normal mortal — *Returned-level. No, more. Elantrian-level.* — to the point that the instrument cannot read her cleanly. Design is delighted, and idly speculates Yumi might explode when she dies.STD:YNP:Ch 32
- has-memory-excision-from-stable-nightmare-touchDesign sees in Yumi's spiritweb a clean excision — about a day's worth of memories cut out — that lines up with the stable nightmare's incorporeal touch in the playground. Memories in heavily Invested beings spread through the whole soul, which is why a Cognitive Shadow remembers what its body did; whatever was taken from Yumi is gone.STD:YNP:Ch 32
- thematic-connection-lines-to-thirteen-other-yoki-hijoOn the spiritweb reading, Design picks out thirteen odd thematic Connection-lines from Yumi — a count that matches the thirteen other living yoki-hijo of her generation — running west, the same direction Painter patrols the shroud. They are on this same planet.STD:YNP:Ch 32
- memory-of-painter-excised-after-machine-firedAfter the machine severs the Connection, Yumi resumes the daily ritual without Painter in her memory — but the excision is incomplete. She glances repeatedly at the empty side of the cold spring expecting someone to be there; the desire to ask for a trip to Torio City that she carried for weeks now feels hollow; the shrine she has never visited feels *familiar*. She reads the hollowness as growing finally into the obedient yoki-hijo her warden wanted.STD:YNP:Ch 35
- trapped-living-the-same-day-for-seventeen-centuriesLiyun tells Painter she has been in this state *since before your people made cities, since the days when this land had a sun* — centuries upon centuries, millennia. The same single day for Yumi erased each night so she can live it again the next, for roughly seventeen hundred years. Her one-day memory loss is the truth of her entire life.STD:YNP:Ch 36
- overhears-her-keepers-debating-her-memoryYumi dreams in voices and overhears the three who manage her — a *patch* on her memory weakening, a debate over cutting a month of memory out entirely with the machine, the admission that the strength is not available and that she would notice the attempt, and the final fallback: *we deal with her, then try again.*STD:YNP:Ch 37
- memory-of-painter-restored-by-his-paintingThe painting Liyun carried out of the shroud — two overlapping hands, one Yumi's, one Painter's, above a sea of lights — restores her memories of him in a single shock that hits her like a hundred-foot tower of stones collapsing.STD:YNP:Ch 37
- centuries-of-practice-survived-the-nightly-memory-wipeThe machine failed to plan for one thing: although Yumi's memories were erased each day, skill is not memory. Muscle and soul retained what mind could not. Across seventeen hundred years she perfected her stacking until — on the day of the story — she had become literally the best who ever lived at it, with the equivalent of twenty lifetimes of practice.STD:YNP:Ch 39
- can-shape-shroud-stuff-by-deciding-it-is-somethingOut in the shroud Yumi discovers she is the same substance as the dark around her, and so the dark obeys her conviction. The unravelling tree stays a tree as long as she insists it is one; the wind blows the direction she requires; *my world, my rules.* She is the substance of the shroud and outranks it.STD:YNP:Ch 40
- stacks-the-trapped-spirits-free-and-kills-the-machineYumi kneels in the rubble of Torio City and stacks. With twenty lifetimes of perfected art she draws the bound spirits away from the machine one by one until none are left to fuel it. The self-perpetuating device, starved, falls still and disintegrates. The shielded barrier never had to be broken; the machine was beaten by something it could never match — meaning.STD:YNP:Ch 41
- cannot-survive-the-end-of-the-shroudThe fourteen yoki-hijo only stayed alive after their initial death because the machine held the shroud in place around them. With the machine gone and the shroud unravelling, Yumi dissolves with it. She knows this when she places the final stone; she does it anyway, as service to her people, the spirits, and Painter.STD:YNP:Ch 41
- painted-back-as-real-because-she-wanted-to-beThe same principle that makes nightmares real — raw Investiture taking the shape an imagination forces on it — works in reverse for Yumi. From the last shreds of the shroud and his finished masterpiece, Painter forms her body; she meets him in the smoke; and at the last, when she at last consents to choose for herself — *I deserve to choose; I deserve love* — she stays. As real as anyone else. Because she wanted to be.STD:YNP:Epilogue
Events
- STD:YNP:Ch 10 Follows Painter past the privacy rocks to the spring because the tether will not let her stay further away, undresses to perform her own ritual cleansing as duty requires, and discovers that the spring's water is the first thing other than Painter that she can actually feel.
- STD:YNP:Ch 10 Wakes on the floor of Painter's apartment in Kilahito wearing his oversized pajamas, her hair a frizzy mess, and stumbles to her feet — this time she is the one who knocks an old noodle bowl on the table, while Painter's hand passes straight through it.
- STD:YNP:Ch 12 Pacing behind Painter invisible to everyone else, finally breaks her silence to take control of the conversation with Liyun.
- STD:YNP:Ch 12 Walks tethered alongside Painter, stepping between him and the steamwell eruption to enforce the yoki-hijo's composure she expects of him.
- STD:YNP:Ch 12 Spends the entire ritual standing in the water waiting for Painter to peek so she can catch him at it, then stubbornly closes the last inch to nose-touch him for the shared hion jolt.
- STD:YNP:Ch 14 Argues with Painter over his failed stacking, then accepts the apartment shower as her first ever solo bath and dresses in his clothes in three improvised layers.
- STD:YNP:Ch 14 Bows the foreman a full ritual obeisance and acts as Painter's mouthpiece in asking about the Dreamwatch.
- STD:YNP:Ch 14 Accepts Akane's help through sobs, the first time anyone in Kilahito has offered her something she actually needs.
- STD:YNP:Ch 16 In Painter's body, arranges her new outfits on the floor and is taught what a closet is, then argues down Painter's objections and walks out to meet Akane for lunch.
- STD:YNP:Ch 16 Is paraded by Akane before Tojin, Masaka, and Izzy as Nikaro's little sister, fed an invented fortune, and given a sketch of a cute bunny with cavernous eyes.
- STD:YNP:Ch 16 Joins Painter at the bar to confess she does not know how to be a person, and watches him reach to take her hand before remembering he cannot.
- STD:YNP:Ch 18 In ghost form, floats nearby in the cool spring insisting they bathe at the same time, then coaches Painter line-by-line through the ritual apology to Liyun.
- STD:YNP:Ch 18 In ghost form, circles Painter at the place of ritual running him through stone-weighing — heft, balance, centre of gravity — and dismisses his speech about art-as-feeling as poetry, a luxury they are not allowed.
- STD:YNP:Ch 20 In ghost form, walks circles around Painter coaching the first real stacks of his training, breaks into a startled grin when he gets six stones up, then builds her own delicate ten-stone tower with the flowing, scooping motions of someone who has been doing this all her life.
- STD:YNP:Ch 20 Yanked along after Painter from the place of ritual, recognises the visitors as university scholars from Torio City and admits, with a hand to her lips, that she has always wanted to see them.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Hyperventilates in ghost form as Painter eats his own breakfast and stands his ground against Liyun; afterward asks to be left alone.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Eventually slips into the cool spring beside Painter, conjures spirit copies of the soaps, and concedes she cannot refute his logic about the Chosen being the actual decider.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Kneels beside Painter at the floating orchard shrine, identifies Hwanji's face in a few-stroke sketch, and quietly admits her bamboo practice has felt like meditation too.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Coaches Painter through hours of stacks, warns him about Liyun's power to refer unfit yoki-hijo for "special attention", and concedes he is wearing her body and his transgressions show on her.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Steps barefoot onto the hot stones without noticing as the schism is laid out, then sinks to her knees with tears in her eyes; asks Painter to go to sleep so she can be someone else for a while.
- STD:YNP:Ch 24 Bursts through the tent wall in a panic about *categoric hooliganism and malfeasance*, scrambles up onto a low branch, and rides the unhooked tree slowly skyward as the scholars below point.
- STD:YNP:Ch 24 Crying and laughing on her branch, hair caught in the wind, she leans toward a butterfly that cannot see her and tells Painter she is glad she saw this before losing everything.
- STD:YNP:Ch 24 Coaches Painter through hours of stacks, cheers when the spirit surfaces, then cries when it swims to the scholars instead — and tells him afterward that he can still beat the machine on stack quality if not speed.
- STD:YNP:Ch 26 Caught on the fire-escape landing holding Painter's bag, looks sheepish, lets Akane tow her down the steps, and as they walk choke-tells the others about the elderly woman and the nightmare feeding in her room.
- STD:YNP:Ch 26 Seated at the clique's table with Akane's arm around her shoulders and a bowl of warm broth in front of her, slowly settles enough to listen as Izzy begins to explain what her brother actually is.
- STD:YNP:Ch 28 Wide-eyed at the lights, asks what a game is, eats too many fried pop'ems, watches the performers with serious delight, then assesses the box-toppling stall like a stacking puzzle — paying for ten throws, finding the weighted box, and winning five in a row — and gives the giant pink dragon (named *Liyun Noodleface*) to a child instead of carrying it home.
- STD:YNP:Ch 28 Rides the Jotun Line with Painter in the same two-person pod, watches the carnival turn into a pattern below, admits she is happy, and rests her hand on the bar an inch from his at the pinnacle.
- STD:YNP:Ch 28 Stops on the cobbles to kneel and paint the view from the ride — their hands overlapping on the bar this time — gives the picture to Painter as a memento, tells him she does not think he is a liar but a dreamer, and then sees the stable nightmare step out of the alley behind them.
- STD:YNP:Ch 30 Sits at the clique's table over her second bowl of spiced broth, refusing the hospital, defending her brother fiercely against Izzy's assumption that he must have run — *I saw him earlier today. You're all wrong about him.*
- STD:YNP:Ch 30 Steps up beside Painter at the viewer as the lead explorer reports oceans and boats — words she doesn't recognise — then watches in silence as four-armed chalk-white locals approach the ship and the long-held assumption about her homeworld dies on the broadcast.
- STD:YNP:Ch 32 Sits at Design's bar while the fabrial reads her as overwhelmingly Invested; goes silent when told she has lost a day of memory and again when she sees the count *thirteen* and realises Design is describing the other living yoki-hijo of her generation.
- STD:YNP:Ch 32 Kneels in front of the shroud at the edge of Kilahito and stacks pebbles faster and faster until the dark splits open onto another yoki-hijo reaching toward her in silent scream.
- STD:YNP:Ch 34 Studies the overlay of the two maps and recognises Painter has been right; proposes that they destroy the machine by invoking the yoki-hijo's ultimate authority over a town she visits, not by trying to outfight scholars.
- STD:YNP:Ch 34 Speaks the firm version of the command through Painter — *either you will help me or you will physically restrain me* — startling even him with how stern she can be.
- STD:YNP:Ch 34 Marches at Painter's side with the bailiff and twelve hammer-men, urges him to ask the scholars more questions before letting them break the machine, then falls to her knees as the machine starts up — her body twisting into wisps of smoke, less than the others around her but unmistakably the same kind of transformation. *Nikaro. What is happening to me.*
- STD:YNP:Epilogue Reaches out of the last vortex of dying shroud behind Painter's finished masterpiece, takes his hand, then his other hand; chooses, for the first time in her long life, *for herself*, and stays — found by passersby moments later in his arms beneath the painting, as real as anyone else.
