Torio
A kingdom on a hot, sunlit world, ruled by a queen from Torio City. A dominant red-orange sun bigger and closer than the one above your world bathes its landscape; the ground itself is sacredly warm, the source of life and heat. Plants here float on thermals rather than touch the searing stone, water bursts from periodic steamwells, and the country's holiest figures are the yoki-hijo. STD:YNP:Ch 2
Known facts
- thermals-from-stone-and-floating-plantsThe narrator concedes he never fully figured out Torio's aerodynamics — his current theory is microfractures in the stones forcing air upward as thermals, which would also account for the plants' ability to drift in the air the way they do.STD:YNP:Ch 20
- cusp-of-hion-industrial-revolutionThe Institute's machine is powered by hion lines — magenta and azure — drawn from a living person's hand by a primer plate, which means Torio's scholars have independently figured out how to summon hion and stand at the edge of their own industrial revolution. Painter recognises the colours instantly.STD:YNP:Ch 23
- floating-plants-lighten-what-clings-to-themPainter confirms by experiment in a chained shade tree: Torio's floating plants make whatever clings to them lighter the closer it is to the trunk. Climbed and hugged tight, a person becomes nearly weightless and the plant lifts; out on a branch, the weight returns and the plant settles. They have barely any roots — only vestigial curls — well adapted to a ground too hot to anchor in.STD:YNP:Ch 24
- no-large-bodies-of-standing-waterYumi does not know the word *ocean*. Standing water on her world is limited to the occasional cool spring high above the searing stones; anything larger would boil away.STD:YNP:Ch 28
- overlaps-the-shrouded-walled-circles-of-painters-worldOverlaying Masaka's map of the shroud's impassable walled circles onto Liyun's wagon-driver map of Torio at scale shows a perfect correspondence: every circle of solidified shroud sits over a town in Torio, and the largest of them is Torio City itself. The two lands occupy the same ground, neither overlapping the other's actual living space but never more than a few miles apart.STD:YNP:Ch 34
