The Voice
Not a god and not a spren — one of the Unmade, hiding in the cavern beyond the Sheathing of Swords in the Bondsmith monastery. For generations she has spoken inside the heads of the Shin stone shamans and Honorbearers as Truth, nailed spren to her chamber walls as ornaments while she remakes them into *better versions of themselves*, and chosen Honorbearers to *prepare* for what she means to do — including the boy Szeth, who first heard her speak on the day he killed. SA:WaT:Ch 94
A speaker the Shin stone shamans and Honorbearers obey — heard inside their minds and treated as Truth itself. After Szeth takes Tuko's Blade, the Voice calls him to fly to the second pilgrimage and, on its completion, to come to Ayabiza and seek the holy grotto beyond — where, it promises, Szeth will at last know the full extent of Truth. Known facts
- tortures-spren-in-the-grottoThe Voice keeps a stone chamber in the Bondsmith monastery in which she has affixed spren of every variety to the walls with crystal spikes — windspren, flamespren, gloryspren, an angerspren, a translucent arrowhead-shape, and others — *on purpose,* she says, *so they have to learn their true master.* She means to transform them into versions of themselves that match her and *what she needs them to do.*SA:WaT:Ch 94
- pushes-szeth-to-bait-the-honorbearers-with-a-larger-armyRe-entering Szeth's head after he sinks into despair on a town boardwalk, the Voice tells him the other Honorbearers hide and ignore him only because his rebellion is still small — and that he must build *a real army* big enough to be impossible to ignore. Szeth tries to shout it out of his head and instead takes its advice.SA:WaT:Ch 106
- voice-promises-to-harden-szeth-and-return-in-a-decadeSpeaking only into Szeth's head as the judgement gathers around the fire, the Voice tells him plainly that it had hoped he would strike his father down and start a real revolution, and that it must therefore *do something to harden him* into a general acquainted with war. *Goodbye, Szeth. I'll see you in a decade.* Then it vanishes, and he is left to wonder, that night, whether he ever heard it at all.SA:WaT:Ch 117
Events
- SA:WaT:Ch 83 Speaks to the assembled Honorbearers from inside their minds, calling Szeth to Ayabiza for his second pilgrimage's reward.
- SA:WaT:Ch 94 Speaks inside Szeth's mind throughout, leads him along the trail to the holy grotto, and walks out of the inner tunnel as a man-shaped darkness coming to be worshipped.
- SA:WaT:Ch 106 Returns to Szeth's head on the boardwalk after a long absence, mocks the other Honorbearers as too weak to come at him while his rebellion is small, and pushes him to build a real army.
- SA:WaT:Ch 117 Speaks privately to Szeth around the fire, then through the other Honorbearers, announcing it will return *in a decade.*
