Wyndle
A spren bonded to Lift who manifests in the Physical Realm as a creeping ribbon of dark green vine studded with smooth quartz-like crystals; the spent trail hardens into crystal and crumbles to dust behind him. He grows rather than moves, can form a face out of vine and gem at the end of his coil, and is invisible to almost everyone but his bondmate. Insists he is not a Voidbringer and that he was, before all this, a gardener. SA:ED:Prologue
Known facts
- gardener-of-chairsBefore the bond was, in his own telling, a gardener in Shadesmar — and not of plants, but of chairs. He cultivated the souls of furniture that came across from the Physical Realm into crystals: Winstels, a Shober, several spoonbacks, even a throne or two. He was preparing an exhibition of sofas when the Ring of cultivationspren assigned him to bond a human.SA:ED:Prologue
- bonded-lift-by-ringBonded Lift on the assignment of the cultivationspren ruling Ring, against his own preference for a distinguished Iriali matron — the Ring overruled him on the grounds that Mother had blessed Lift and that, being young, she could be moulded. The transition into the Physical Realm was, by his account, easier than expected — a side-effect, he suspects, of her own unusual nature.SA:ED:Prologue
- must-get-lift-to-say-the-wordsConfesses out loud, in the Yeddaw slot, that his appointed job in this bond is to get Lift to say the Words. He clearly expects this to involve being slammed into people as a weapon, and is openly miserable about the prospect.SA:ED:Ch 4
- explains-ideals-as-living-wordsWyndle explains the Ideals to Lift as living ideas with power — Words she must let into her soul to advance their bond. He notes that the Skybreakers they overheard the night before are pursuing the same next step in their training, which is also what eventually grants a Shardblade.SA:ED:Ch 11
- volunteers-to-eavesdrop-on-skybreakersEven though he admits he doesn't know whether the Skybreakers' cultivationspren will be able to see him — and that yes, spren of his kind can be destroyed, in their own way — Wyndle volunteers to creep alone into the closed room to listen, while Lift waits outside past the assassin in the silvery sheath. He is, in his own assessment, frightened past the point of being able to make a sound.SA:ED:Ch 15
- first-shard-manifestation-as-silvery-rodWhen Lift speaks the Third Ideal under Darkness's descending Blade, Wyndle sighs *a long, soft sigh*, melts away, and condenses into a silvery rod glowing in the dark — not a sword, because Lift doesn't know crem about swords. It blocks the Herald's blow. *Ow*, his voice says in her head. He explains later that the metal has to be metal — the connection between Radiant power, when condensed, and metal — but the shape is up to her.SA:ED:Ch 19
- must-be-metal-but-can-take-any-shapeThe morning after the storm, Wyndle explains the rules to Lift in the Stump's bedroom: when he condenses, he must be metal — there is *a connection between our power, when condensed, and metal* — but the shape is up to her. A sword is traditional. He has heard stories of spren becoming bows, though he can't figure out where the string came from. He is, however, very vocal that he would make a stately Shardblade if she'd let him. She summons him as a giant silvery fork instead, stabs him through a stack of pancakes and into the dresser, and declares him majestic.SA:ED:Ch 20
Events
- SA:ED:Prologue Coils up walls and along floors at Lift's side throughout the heist, ladders her over the palace wall and along a ledge above the guards, and circles her vine-distress as Darkness draws the Stormlight out of her.
- SA:ED:Ch 1 Grows along the ground beside Lift through the open Tashikk fields, pleads with her to turn back to Azimir, and reminisces at length about his lost chair-gardens in Shadesmar.
- SA:ED:Ch 2 Coils up beside Lift above the trench-city, climbs the back of a chull cart in the queue to lecture her face to face about chasing a deific Shardbearer, and ducks the question of what he knows about Shardblades.
- SA:ED:Ch 3 Invisible to Hauka but present alongside Lift — his crystal trail crumbles into the strange black dust the captain finds at her feet by the ledge after Lift jumps over.
- SA:ED:Ch 4 Acts as Lift's vine-rope down the cliff drop, grows along the slot walls beside her through the immigrant quarter, twines up her arm to read the stolen guard logbook, and complains about being used as a weapon when she pinches a book she cannot read.
- SA:ED:Ch 5 Sits beside Lift on the tarp above the shanty as a small tower of vines and leaves in the breeze, and asks her quietly why she has never been to the Reshi Isles and who she actually is.
- SA:ED:Ch 6 Stretched along the wall beside Lift in the slot alley and on the orphanage benches; complains about her opportunistic theory of orphan-running and asks who the doorman is.
- SA:ED:Ch 7 Grows down Lift's arm and along the cliff to make her a climbing rope up the Yeddaw tenement, nudges her awake from the treb-vines at dawn, whimpers his way through the eavesdropping.
- SA:ED:Ch 8 Trails Lift through the Yeddaw streets and over the cistern bridge, grows up the ornamental tree she uses for cover, snakes vines through the shutters to unlatch them, and reluctantly agrees to help her spy on Darkness from inside his own safehouse.
- SA:ED:Ch 9 Coils around Lift's leg in the alley afterwards and works out who the safehouse's master must be — *Nin* is a Herald-name, Nalan's name — in a voice gone small with dread.
- SA:ED:Ch 10 On the orphanage steps beside Lift, coats the wall and works the conversation up to her real reason for being in this city — and what she actually wants out of any of it.
- SA:ED:Ch 11 Curls along walls and vines beside Lift through a public garden and up to a perch above Yeddaw, trying to pin her down on the Words and watching her work out where the city stores what it writes.
- SA:ED:Ch 12 Climbs the alley wall ahead of Lift and curls beside her on the field-rim, forming a vine face to argue against her plan to drop him into the Indicium and have him read every paper inside.
- SA:ED:Ch 13 On the floor and table beside Lift throughout the interview with Ghenna, growing the vine-shaped letters for the calling card she presents and, later, for the spanreed note to Gawx.
- SA:ED:Ch 14 Coiled on Ghenna's desk throughout the research session, then trails Lift into the unlit back corridors where, finding only paper and locked sphere-lanterns, the two of them conclude they have to follow Darkness's apprentices to wherever those apprentices' own scribes have looked.
- SA:ED:Ch 15 Scouts the room numbers ahead of Lift, then — when she can think of no other way past the assassin — volunteers to creep alone into Bidlel's room to listen, growing along the corridor with side-shoots that crumble to dust behind him. Comes back unable to remember which oddity the Skybreakers settled on, but certain they have settled on one.
- SA:ED:Ch 16 Sticks to Lift as she trails the Skybreakers through the Indicium and out onto the landing, and stands by — small and uneasy — as she questions the assassin and resolves, with no plan and no chance, to chase the other two across the city anyway.
- SA:ED:Ch 17 Trails Lift through the trenches as she falls over and over again trying to skid through the city, then curls onto the wall beside her in the dim orphanage hall as she answers his old question: she wants control. He doesn't entirely follow what she means, but agrees, gently, that it sounds like a reasonable thing to want.
- SA:ED:Ch 18 Coils tight around Lift's leg in the dark alley, whimpering, then climbs the shanty wall beside her — and the cremlings that compose Arclo shy away wherever he goes. They can sense him.
- SA:ED:Ch 19 Grows handholds for Lift up the kitchen wall and across the storm-blown roof, then — when Darkness's Blade descends and the Words are spoken — sighs out of his vine form and condenses into a silvery rod in her hands, glowing in the dark, blocking the Herald's blow. *Ow*, his voice says in her head.
- SA:ED:Ch 20 On the Stump's dresser, theorising about spren-as-bows and admitting he would love to be a stately Shardblade some day. Gets summoned as a giant silvery fork instead — stabbed through pancakes and dresser-top — and then, on the road out of Yeddaw, skeptically declares Lift benevolent and asks her, hopefully, whether he was at least a regal fork.
- SA:WaT:I-13 Mopes alongside Lift in Navani's office, indignant about untouched caviar, then turns into a sword and a crowbar so she can cut her way up through an aluminum-lined ceiling.
