Jastes
A noble heir, friend of Elend Venture — one of the five young men who meet in a Keep Hasting tower to debate forbidden books and what their houses might become if their generation could be persuaded to act in concert against the Lord Ruler. MB1:TFE:Ch 23
Known facts
- marches-koloss-army-on-luthadelHas, by means he does not explain to Sazed, gathered more than twenty thousand koloss under his command and is marching them across the Central Dominance toward Luthadel, where he intends to offer Elend Venture the third army's protection in exchange for the Lord Ruler's atium and a place inside the city walls. He is the first man on record to have brought a koloss force to bear since the empire fell.MB1:WoA:Ch 19
- pays-koloss-with-counterfeit-boxingsJastes Lekal is keeping his army in line by paying it in counterfeit boxings — gold paint over hardwood blanks — a fact Elend confirms by looting a pouch from a koloss he kills himself outside Jastes's tent. The fakes are crude enough that only a koloss would take them, and Jastes has clearly run out of real money.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- killed-by-elend-for-koloss-armyJastes flees north after his koloss army's supply of wooden coins burns and the creatures turn on him; he overtakes Elend Venture's party on the road and is beheaded by Elend for raising the army and abandoning it on Luthadel's doorstep.MB1:WoA:Ch 51
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 23 Speaks from inside the lit tower room as Vin listens at the shutter — pushing the circle to treat reform of their houses as a real political project, and naming three of his companions as second heirs at minimum.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 28 In his own family's lounge with Elend and Telden after the night's meeting; warns Elend that Valette fits no honest country-cousin shape and is too convenient an attachment.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 28 Comes to Elend's rooms in the small hours to report that Valette's carriage was leaving Fellise empty — and to push for treating her as a planted spy.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 31 Drives Elend out of the chaos with the sack of forbidden books, then sits annoyed while Elend is more relieved than alarmed that Valette turns out to be a skaa thief.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 19 Calls himself King Lekal, paces nervously while running a hand through his thinning hair, tries to draft Sazed as his steward, and finally settles for sending him on as messenger to Elend Venture with an offer of third-army alliance for the city walls and the atium.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 42 Elend's old friend is found unshaven, half-bald, and drinking alone among his empty bottles; he tries to take Elend captive, ends up pinned to his own desk with an obsidian knife through the shoulder, and is sent away with his soldiers tending him, the hatred plain in his eyes.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 Climbs out of his collapsed tent thin and haggard, admits he tried to lead his koloss away from the city and failed, that his supply carts of wooden coins burnt, and that he fled rather than be torn apart by the creatures when they demanded an attack. He begs Elend's forgiveness; Elend grants it personally and beheads him in the same breath.
Relations
- relatedKoloss — Elend's camp visit confirms that Jastes Lekal is holding his army together not through the Lord Ruler's old methods but by paying it in counterfeit gold-painted wood — a substitute that works only because koloss do not check. MB1:WoA:Ch 42
