Elend Venture
Heir of House Venture — nobleman-philosopher, would-be reformer, and as of the morning the Lord Ruler died, king in Keep Venture. He took the city not by claim but by stepping up to the skaa mob with Breeze's quiet help and saying what no one else was saying. The nobility mean to puppet him, the skaa already mean to fight him; he is drafting a law code anyway. MB1:TFE:Epilogue
Heir to House Venture. A loose-suited young nobleman who carries a book in his coat pocket and prefers reading on a quiet balcony to dancing in the hall below. Speaks of his own house and its servants with an irreverence Vin does not expect from a high lord. MB1:TFE:Ch 12 superseded at MB1:TFE:Epilogue
Known facts
- engagement-shan-elarielElend tells Vin he may be engaged to Shan Elariel — neither side has moved on the matter for a year or so, and he is hoping the question has been forgotten by everyone involved.MB1:TFE:Ch 18
- tower-reading-circleElend meets in a Hasting tower with four other young nobles — including Telden and Jastes — to share banned books, debate fairness and moderation in government, and talk about what their houses might do once their generation comes to power. They are, Kelsier judges from three nights of eavesdropping, harmless.MB1:TFE:Ch 23
- father-arranged-skaa-girlAt thirteen Elend was taken by his father Straff to a skaa woman who was killed after the visit, in the standard Luthadel manner — a thing Elend only understood afterward, and has not repeated. By his estimate roughly a third of Luthadel's noblemen routinely keep the practice.MB1:TFE:Ch 23
- hands-vin-handkerchiefOn the Hasting balcony Elend hands Vin his own handkerchief after hers is ruined with weeping; when she tries to return it he tells her — gently — that it was not intended as a practical gift. By Luthadel custom, that makes a second formal courtship offer for her in one evening.MB1:TFE:Ch 23
- learns-vin-is-skaaOnce Felt traces Valette's steward to a watch-nested woodcrafter's shop, Elend concludes she is a skaa thieving-crew plant. He is relieved more than betrayed — and arrested by the implication that, if a skaa girl can pass for an aristocrat under his nose, the line his class draws over hers cannot be where it claims to be.MB1:TFE:Ch 31
- refuses-to-abandon-luthadelWith his father fleeing Luthadel under cover of the skaa rising, Elend refuses to leave Keep Venture. Left in nominal command of the abandoned keep, he marches the household to Keep Lekal under a peace offer and sets out with five soldiers to surrender himself to the rebels.MB1:TFE:Ch 36
- offers-truce-to-rebelsHaving surrendered to Dockson's crew under a sack hood, Elend offers them a truce on behalf of the noble houses — pull the skaa armies off the keeps and pour them at the Ministry and the Lord Ruler instead. Without an economy to inherit, he argues, a rising in chaos will eat itself.MB1:TFE:Ch 37
- becomes-king-in-luthadelWith no atium in the Lord Ruler's treasury and the city streets in massacre, Elend climbed onto a podium before the rebel army and condemned the bloodshed. Breeze worked the crowd; the speech held. By that evening he was being treated as king from Keep Venture — by skaa leaders, by surviving nobility, and by Marsh on behalf of the Ministry.MB1:TFE:Epilogue
- founded-luthadel-assemblyFounded the Luthadel Assembly, a twenty-four-man parliamentary council with real legal authority alongside the throne — a deliberate break from the rule-by-decree of the Lord Ruler and the chosen frame of his new Central Dominance kingdom.MB1:WoA:Ch 1
- besieged-by-straffA year into his reign in Luthadel, finds his own father Straff Venture camped outside the city wall with fifty thousand soldiers, intent on taking the Central Dominance from him.MB1:WoA:Ch 1
- cannot-find-atium-cacheHas searched Luthadel for a year without finding the Lord Ruler's reserve of atium — a missing fortune every surviving warlord in the old empire believes he is sitting on, and the chief reason so many of them keep sending men to take the city from him.MB1:WoA:Ch 3
- saved-by-kelsierReveals to Vin that on the morning of the Lord Ruler's death, Kelsier looked him in the eye and threw himself at an Inquisitor that had been about to take his head off — saving a nobleman's life on purpose, despite his reputation for hating nobles.MB1:WoA:Ch 5
- assembly-solidarity-voteWins a two-thirds vote of the Luthadel Assembly binding it not to surrender the city to Straff Venture until the king has met his father in official parlay — carried on Lord Penrod's grudging support, given to deny Philen and the merchants the chance to hand the city over before the nobility extracts guarantees.MB1:WoA:Ch 10
- chooses-divide-the-armies-strategyCommits himself and the crew to the plan of his that the crew spends the meeting trying to talk him out of — instead of surrendering Luthadel to Cett in exchange for a vassal governorship, he means to keep both Straff Venture and Cett each convinced the city is on their side, drag the standoff out, harass their canal supplies, and let the two armies bleed each other down to where what is left can be fought. He frames it as the Assembly's solidarity vote requires: no surrender until he has parlayed with Straff in person.MB1:WoA:Ch 13
- accepts-tindwyl-as-kingship-trainerAccepts Tindwyl's offer to train him into the kind of king people will follow — posture, words, presence, the mechanics that books on governance never give. She tells him, plainly and across his protests, that his Assembly ignores his authority, his skaa do not believe he can protect them, and his own council made plans in his absence; he has good ideas and is not yet a king.MB1:WoA:Ch 14
- white-uniform-and-coronetReplaces his loose scholar's suits with a fitted white military uniform — stiff jacket buttoned to a rigid collar, wooden buttons, a shieldlike spear device over the breast, white cape, polished black boots, dueling cane on his belt — at Tindwyl's insistence, and cuts his hair short to match. With the uniform he accepts a simple silver- painted wooden coronet that he is to wear at all times, in public or private, as a constant reminder that he is in charge. The change of dress is when his bearing starts to follow.MB1:WoA:Ch 16
- trained-as-king-by-tindwylSubmits to a discreet, comprehensive kingship-training program under Tindwyl — covering dress, posture, speech, walking, the handling of weapons, and the cultivation of a commanding manner — to be conducted alongside private dueling lessons in the cane and sword, so that the garrison never sees their king losing a sparring match.MB1:WoA:Ch 16
- walks-into-straffs-camp-with-vinDecides over his crew's objections to walk personally and unarmed into Straff Venture's siege camp, taking only Vin with him, to convince his father that Luthadel is on the Venture side of the three-way standoff — and then to walk into Cett's camp afterward and tell Cett exactly the opposite. The Assembly has the power to elect a new king if he is taken hostage; the family relationship is meant to keep him alive long enough to be released.MB1:WoA:Ch 20
- deposed-by-assemblyElend is deposed by his own Assembly under the no-confidence clause he himself wrote — a unanimous vote of all twenty-three sitting members held the same evening he was at Straff Venture's camp negotiating for the city's survival. The letter is handed to him in his carriage on the way back through Tin Gate.MB1:WoA:Ch 27
- refuses-martial-law-to-keep-throneFaced with his own deposition, Elend refuses every plan his advisors put to him to keep the throne by force — Tindwyl urges him to declare martial law and sequester the Assembly, Clubs offers to put soldiers on the streets by dawn — and tells them he will not exempt himself from his own laws. He will fight the deposition only by the legal means written into the kingdom's charter, and if he cannot win it back lawfully he will accept the loss and serve the kingdom anyway.MB1:WoA:Ch 28
- claims-survivor-legacyFrom the Assembly lectern in the wake of his deposition, Elend publicly binds his government to the Survivor's legacy and names Vin as the Survivor's heir — the most powerful Mistborn alive, the threat that keeps his father from the walls. The speech is meant equally for the chamber, the city beyond it, and the spies in Straff's camp.MB1:WoA:Ch 31
- claims-throne-for-selfWalking the city wall with Ham the morning of the vote, Elend hears himself say plainly, for the first time, that he wants to be king — the position is his, the city is his, and he will not surrender either to Penrod or Cett. Ham names it self-confidence; Elend calls it the arrogance he has been missing through most of his reign and decides he will rule as the scholar-idealist he is rather than try to be either Kelsier or any of the pre-imperial kings of his books.MB1:WoA:Ch 37
- joins-church-of-the-survivorFrom the Assembly lectern on the day of the vote, Elend Venture announces that he has joined the Church of the Survivor — a manoeuvre cooked up the night before with Ham and Demoux to lock the skaa Assemblymen behind him and deadlock the vote. He tells the Church he can offer devotion but not yet belief; in exchange they offer the Heir an open public ally on the throne.MB1:WoA:Ch 38
- confronts-jastes-with-knifeElend rides alone into the koloss camp, walks into Jastes Lekal's tent, refuses the offered drink, and — when Jastes calls his guards to take him hostage — drops both soldiers and pins his childhood friend to a desk with the obsidian knife Vin once gave him. He leaves Jastes alive and orders him to march his army out of the dominance.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- kills-koloss-aloneOn the way back out of the camp Elend picks a small koloss from his escort, attacks it with the obsidian knife, takes a sword-cut across the ribs, and finally rams the blade into its eye — winning a fight with a koloss alone and on foot, with the rest of the escort watching impassively as its kin died.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- marries-vin-by-larsta-riteElend marries Vin in Sazed's rooms in Keep Venture while Sazed stitches her fight wounds, by the rite of the Larsta — the Terrisman standing as sole witness.MB1:WoA:Ch 48
- zane-was-his-half-brotherVin tells Elend that the Mistborn she just killed — Straff's own Mistborn — was Zane, Elend's half-brother. He pushes it aside as less urgent than her wounds.MB1:WoA:Ch 48
- executes-jastes-lekal-for-koloss-armyElend beheads Jastes Lekal — his old friend from the book club — on the road north of Luthadel for raising the koloss army, leading it in a tyrannical assault, and then abandoning it leaderless outside the city. It is the first man he has ever killed, and he weeps for it afterward; the execution is the moment he begins to accept that he is a tool of the kingdom whether he wears the crown or not.MB1:WoA:Ch 51
- becomes-mistborn-via-disk-beadDying at the empty Well in Vin's arms, Elend is given the small bead of unknown metal from the one unbroken pottery disk on the ledge — at the spirit's urging — and washed it down with one of Vin's vials. Colour returns to his cheeks. She burns bronze and feels Allomantic pulses coming off him: he is burning pewter. He is now Mistborn.MB1:WoA:Ch 59
- survives-gut-wound-with-pewterElend survives the spirit's gut wound only because the metal bead Vin fed him made him Mistborn and he could burn pewter through the surgery; even with pewter the surgeons were unsure he would live. He rises the first day he is lucid and is up on the city wall in one of Tindwyl's white uniforms, harder than he was a few weeks before.MB1:WoA:Epilogue
- rides-alone-to-vetitan-as-emperorTwo years after taking Luthadel, Elend Venture is riding the Southern Dominance alone in a white emperor's uniform, calling himself emperor to the small skaa towns that lie outside any garrison's reach. He arrives at Vetitan ahead of a koloss army of about ten thousand, accepts Fatren's oath under duress, and takes command on his own authority — making clear that he will take it whether the oath is given or not.MB1:HoA:Ch 1
- teaches-skaa-defenders-to-fight-kolossElend arrives at Vetitan and in minutes drills a peasant militia on what he has learned about koloss from his own campaigns: that they fight as individuals and will not help a struggling comrade, that they should be ganged two-on-one (more for the larger creatures), that big ones should be cut down at the legs before the kill, that small ones should not be allowed to snag a blade in their loose skin, and that the most dangerous moment is the frenzy — which fades into looting if the line holds long enough.MB1:HoA:Ch 1
- unusually-strong-as-allomancerVin has been telling Elend for a year now that his raw Allomantic strength is unusual: his emotional Pushes reach more people than they should, and a duralumin-fed Steelpush at his weight should not be able to throw an Inquisitor across a hill the way his does. Elend himself attributes it tentatively to the source — the Well of Ascension — that made him Mistborn in the first place.MB1:HoA:Ch 3
- joined-church-of-survivorElend has formally joined the Church of the Survivor — politically, to forge a link between himself and the skaa whose faith it is, though Vin is uncomfortable enough with the church's growing reach to be quietly uneasy about it.MB1:HoA:Ch 8
- emperor-must-make-everything-betterElend privately reduces the emperor's role to a single duty: to make everything better. He tells himself this in the mirror as he buttons the white uniform with its gold-painted wooden buttons cut deliberately too low in metal to be Allomantically Pushed — the king's image he wears for his men's sake more than his own.MB1:HoA:Ch 12
- intentionally-inoculates-army-against-mist-sicknessOn the march toward Fadrex, Elend deliberately exposes his full army to the daytime mists outside their tents, knowing roughly one man in fifty will fall to mist sickness and that most who fall will recover and emerge immune. Of those who fall, the army will then be free to march and fight in the mists without the morning losses that would otherwise be inevitable inside Western Dominance territory.MB1:HoA:Ch 17
- commits-empire-to-vins-ash-missionReversing his earlier division-of-labour speech — empire-building for him, mists and ash for her — Elend tells Vin he will help her save the world. He accepts that she does not need a worshipper but a husband, and agrees to investigate the strange mist-sickness survival percentages on her behalf while letting her work the larger problem alone.MB1:HoA:Ch 28
- killed-jastes-lekalIt is established here in passing — Elend thinks it as he leaves a conversation with Telden — that he was the one who killed Jastes Lekal. The two of them had been close in their youth; the war that ended with Jastes putting koloss on Luthadel's doorstep ended with Elend killing him for it.MB1:HoA:Ch 32
- shard-of-preservation-allows-him-to-soothe-an-entire-roomDuring the Orielle ball, Elend burns zinc continuously to Soothe the emotions of the entire ballroom at once — keeping the Fadrex nobility from feeling too angry or threatened by his intrusion. Most Allomancers — even Breeze or Vin — would struggle to push that many emotions at once; for Elend, whose Allomantic power runs unusually deep, it costs almost no attention.MB1:HoA:Ch 32
- poisons-fadrex-wells-with-warningOn Cett's urging, Elend sends Vin to poison the six wells inside Fadrex — and to leave a written notice on each one, so the citizens turn to Yomen for water and burn through his storage cache demanding it. He will not slaughter the city; he is willing to thirst it. The decision marks the line between the Elend who has only ever defended and the Elend Tindwyl and Cett have been training.MB1:HoA:Ch 36
- decides-the-enemy-acts-with-a-patternElend arrives at a working theory of the war he is actually fighting: the chaos following the Lord Ruler's fall is not chaos at all. The koloss attacks on Penrod's messengers, the Luthadel riots, the precise three-sixteens pattern in the mist-sickness — all of it is too organised to be happenstance. Something intelligent is using the cousin-system of Hemalurgy to direct its tools, and is working hard to make him pull back from Fadrex. He orders Noorden to throw out the assumption of koloss randomness and replot every uncontrolled koloss movement on record, looking for the pattern.MB1:HoA:Ch 40
- sends-demoux-and-the-mistfallen-back-to-luthadelAfter a brawl in which the mistfallen are again the target — and in which one of them strikes Demoux himself — Elend decides that the camp will tear itself apart if the two factions stay together. He orders Demoux to take roughly three hundred soldiers (the number of mistfallen) back along the canal with the messenger Conrad to reinforce Penrod in revolt-torn Luthadel. He also resolves that the man who struck Demoux will be executed.MB1:HoA:Ch 47
- resolves-to-turn-koloss-armies-against-yomenConvinced by Cett that the siege of Fadrex cannot hold — supplies failing, Luthadel in revolt, raiding parties returning empty-handed from starving villages — Elend decides to abandon pure siege. He goes to Noorden's tent and pulls out the koloss-band maps he had asked the former obligator to compile, intending to bring them to bear against Yomen.MB1:HoA:Ch 47
- captures-a-thirty-thousand-koloss-army-from-an-unprotected-villageElend leaves the Fadrex camp alone, steel-pushing himself northeast through the mists with a bag of copper clips, and finds a wandering force of some thirty thousand koloss sacking an unnamed village. He fights through it on foot — flaring pewter, wielding a koloss sword too heavy for an ordinary man — until he can extinguish his metals, burn duralumin on a zinc Pull, and seize emotional control of the whole army at once. He turns the survivors east toward Fadrex as his own.MB1:HoA:Ch 51
- koloss-bond-persists-as-long-as-the-allomancer-livesElend confirms to Ham that the koloss he gave Vin before her capture still answer to her, and that this is itself proof she is alive: a koloss bond holds as long as its Allomancer lives, with or without metals on her person.MB1:HoA:Ch 61
- chooses-not-to-storm-fadrexOn the rock outcropping above his army, with Fadrex's defences in reach of his koloss, Elend thinks of Vin after Cett's tower and tells Ham to sound the retreat. He will not unleash a horde on a city, even for the cache and even for Vin; they will find another way to get her free.MB1:HoA:Ch 65
- reconciled-his-many-selves-after-choosing-not-to-take-fadrexVin sees, watching Elend in the ash above Fadrex, that the part of him that was the idealist at court and the part of him that was the wartime emperor have settled into one man. He found the balance — and he found it by deciding not to take a city he could have taken. From here on he carries both halves of himself without contradiction.MB1:HoA:Ch 67
- killed-by-marsh-after-burning-the-last-of-ruins-bodyElend dies in the ash outside the Homeland, beheaded by Marsh after a long battle in which he and Demoux's Seers burned every bead of the Trustwarren hoard. His last words are an admission to Marsh that the slaughter was never the point: Ruin's body has been destroyed. His final atium-and-duralumin burn gives him one flash of total understanding before the metals run out.MB1:HoA:Ch 81
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 12 Returns to his favorite reading spot on the upper balcony to find Lady Valette standing in it, talks her past her own refusal to engage, then goes back to his book the moment her Terrisman steward comes looking for her.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 18 Drops a stack of books on Lady Valette's table and reads at it rather than visit the partner his family had arranged for him; asks about the skaa of her plantation, lets her dance, and leaves the ball with young lords of Venture's rival houses.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 23 Arrives late to the Hasting ball, lets Vin confront him about his treatment of skaa women, takes her aside onto a balcony, tells her the truth about the night he was thirteen, and gives her his handkerchief on the way out. Then he goes upstairs to meet his Jastes-and-Telden circle.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Sits in the noble bleachers across the square with a small group of younger men, none of them laughing — one of the small minority Vin picks out through tin who look horrified at what is being done.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 28 Pulls Vin into a balcony alcove, gives away House Venture's atium secret, and asks her again to leave the city while the house war finishes.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 30 Excuses himself from the head table to break things off with Vin in a corridor behind the host's overhang — cold, sharp-suited, deliberately staged so she will leave the city.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 Pushes through the soldiers with two beleaguered bodyguards and a dueling cane, shouting for Valette and demanding to know who authorised the raid on Renoux's convoy.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 34 Burst into the freed convoy demanding which cage Valette had been in; Kelsier hauls the Inquisitor off him in time, then sends him away with the wounded Renoux.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 37 Pulled in off the street as a hooded captive after offering Dockson's rebels gold to be taken to their leader; lays out a truce, then recognises Ham and asks after Valette.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 37 Charges into the torture-room with five Venture house guards and Goradel, dueling cane in hand and no armour; plants himself in front of Vin against the Ministry squad, then reacts poorly to learning she is also a Mistborn in her underclothes.
- MB1:TFE:Epilogue Working at his Keep Venture desk under the patched skylight, drafting the new law code; catches Vin when she finally drops down through it.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 1 Rides into Vetitan alone in a white emperor's uniform, vaults his horse to the top of the bulwark with Allomancy, names himself emperor, drills Fatren's militia on koloss tactics, and leads the charge out of the gate at the koloss camp.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 3 Joins Vin on the hilltop in mid-fight by Steeljumping on a coin; the Inquisitor underestimates his raw Allomantic strength and is thrown bodily across the hill by a single Steelpush; he then helps her hold the creature long enough for one of her hijacked koloss to kill it. Closes the battle by Soothing the entire koloss army under duralumin.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 5 Talks Fatren into giving up the cache without Soothing him; reads the Lord Ruler's plate with Vin; sets the next campaign at Fadrex City for the supplies the empire needs, while she sets it for the atium she is sure is there.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 8 Walks into the camp in his white uniform, Soothing only enough to dull the immediate edge of grief, and tells Fatren plainly that the inoculation was the only way to get the townspeople to the Central Dominance alive. Calls it being the kind of monsters they have to be.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 8 Dismounts in Demoux's camp, gives the orders for splitting the army — barges back to Vetitan for the cavern supplies and an escort north for the refugees — and confirms that the last cache lies in Fadrex. Calls a meeting for the evening to plan the conquest of what is left of the world.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 12 Stands at the mirror buttoning his white uniform with its gold-painted wooden buttons, listens to Vin's read of the crew's failing morale, and accepts that fixing it is part of the emperor's job.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 12 Lays out the Noorden map and explains the three mist-perimeter circles, commits the army to march on Fadrex and the smaller party to Urteau, and closes by asking the crew to smile in defiance, the way Kelsier used to.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 15 Conferring with Ham outside the imperial tent at the head of the day's march, Elend argues against waiting out the morning mists. With Vin agreeing, he commits to taking the army into them, inoculating the soldiers as he inoculated Vetitan; then privately admits to her the bitterness of speaking so callously about the men he is ordering to die.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 21 Stands at the prow of Vin's narrowboat through the early scene staring west, brooding on the men he sacrificed to mist-inoculation; turns the conversation to the Lord Ruler, to Snapping beatings of noble children, and his fear that he is becoming the kind of leader who treats people as resources. Later he is the one who folds down to read Noorden's ledgers and admits the sixteen-percent pattern is wrong, very wrong.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 30 Talks the plan through with Ham and Cett on the deck of the narrowboat, settles the empire's succession on the spot, and loses his sentence when Vin comes out of the cabin in her gown.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 30 Walks Vin up the marble steps of Keep Orielle, shoves the barring footman aside with pewter, hands his name-card to the herald, and stands beside her under the announcement.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 37 Moves through the wreckage of the camp's perimeter being seen by his soldiers; pulls Vin aside to tell her the cavalry strike was a feint and the koloss paddock has been trebuchet-flattened. On the plateau he hands her a thousand of the surviving koloss off his bond — they had been too concentrated, and he had lost them, briefly, when their enemies were impossible to reach.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 43 Crouches beside Vin in the mist, flaring tin to try to make out the shadow following them.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 43 Walks into the ball with Vin, notes the converted meeting hall and the lack of dining space, refuses a dance because of nerves, and splits off to mingle with a group of men Vin does not recognise.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 67 Stands the Fadrex wall with Vin and Yomen as the worst quake yet rolls through; speaks steadily about the koloss threat and the city's chances; lets Vin go alone for the atium when she asks, knowing she is lying about something and trusting her anyway.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 76 Glimpsed from far above near the end of the chapter, Vin sensing him riding into Luthadel on bursts of Allomancy.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 82 Headless, in his red-soaked white uniform, atop the pile of koloss corpses where Sazed kneels to find Vin.
- MB1:HoA:Epilogue In a brilliant white uniform and cape — whole, healed, headless no more — at rest with Vin at the center of the field of flowers.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 5 Holds Vin in his plush chair while Dockson finishes the ledgers, then watches her swallow the duralumin and admits afterward that Kelsier saved his life once.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 10 Speaks his prepared address at the lectern asking for a vote of solidarity not to surrender the city without consideration, struggles to hold the floor through a chaotic argument, and scrapes his two-thirds majority once Lord Penrod backs him.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 10 Crosses the stage to Vin, lets her wave him to the unknown Terriswoman, deflects her paranoia with a deliberate compliment, and is about to return to the Assemblymen when the runner reaches the stage.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 14 Sits beside Vin on the council table after Tindwyl has gone, walks her through what little the Ministry taught the nobility about the Deepness and the Well of Ascension, and leaves her to her window before going off to do his late rounds.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 17 Arrives in his new white uniform and short hair, finds Vin writing notes for the first time, and calls her down to receive his father's messenger.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 17 Holds the audience with Zane carefully, refuses to give a date for the meeting, and tells the messenger he will send word when he has decided.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 20 Stands behind his study desk in the new white uniform, pushes the crew through the plan to walk into Straff's camp himself, and finally pronounces it not a discussion — his fists clenched at his sides the whole time.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 28 Stands at the front of his study under the stained-glass window, wilting under Tindwyl's interrogation about why he wrote a deposition clause into his own law, refuses to use the garrison against the Assembly, and rallies the crew to a legal counter-fight by the morning.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 31 Returns to the Assembly in white cape and military-cut suit, dueling cane at his hip, Vin on his arm and the Survivor's crew at his back, and turns the meeting that was meant to bury him into the opening of his own campaign for the throne.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 32 Sits at the Assembly table opposite Cett through the warlord's pitch, casts the lone vote against admitting him into the city, and on the dais afterwards is rebuked by Penrod that ideals cannot face down armies and then accepts Gneorndin's invitation to dinner with Cett.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Musters the escort in the courtyard at Keep Venture — two hundred soldiers and Ham in full kit — and rides with Vin through the mists toward Keep Hasting reminiscing about the ball they never attended together.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Sits across the table from Cett in Keep Hasting and lets the warlord speak. Hears himself called too honest to be king, hears the terms of his own assassination should Cett win, rises to leave when Cett declares the skaa will go back to serving — and sits again when Cett says the word atium.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 36 Arrives at the warehouse in his white uniform with Ham, scolds the clothing merchants of Kenton Street in absentia, then leaves.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Greets every Assemblyman at the dais as they enter, takes the lectern to announce he has joined the Church of the Survivor, then fights off Coinshots with a fallen Thug's dueling cane until Vin finishes them.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 40 Sits beside Vin's bed in a nobleman's suit from his old wardrobe — no white uniform, no crown — accepts his loss to Penrod with relief, and flinches at her touch when she lays a hand on his arm.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 43 Asleep in his bed throughout the scene, a quiet presence over which Vin stands while Zane makes her his proposal.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 45 Walks into Sazed's room in his restored white uniform with the posture of a king, sends Tindwyl out, and asks plainly whether he and Vin are simply too different, accepts Sazed's lock-and-key answer, and is told only that Sazed believes the Deepness never left and is the mists themselves before excusing himself to return to his work.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 Sleeps in the tent the mist spirit enters with a blade raised; Vin cuts the spirit's strike out of the air over his head.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 Steps out of the trees behind Vin's attack, hears Jastes's confession, pronounces his old friend forgiven and his kingdom unable to forgive, and beheads him in a single stroke; afterward sits on a rock in the woods and tells Vin he understands now what it is to be a knife for someone else.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Follows Vin up through the city into Kredik Shaw and down the hidden staircase she has forced open.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Stops Vin from rushing the pool, holds her face, tells her she will know what to do — and picks out the one unbroken bead-disk on the ledge.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Walks unarmed up to the figure and is cut open across the gut; falls; bleeds out at Vin's feet.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Lies dying on the cavern floor beside the pool as Vin takes and then releases the Well's power instead of healing him.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 59 Bleeds out in Vin's arms, swallows the small bead from the disk he had himself broken, and wakes burning pewter — a new Mistborn.
