Koloss
A species of blue-skinned, red-eyed humanoid warriors of enormously varying size — from five-foot scavengers to ten- foot-tall giants — that the Lord Ruler raised as the empire's heaviest shock troops and kept far from cities. Their bodies grow continuously through life, but their skin does not; the eldest tear bloodily at the edges of their eyes, mouths, and chests, and most die when the swelling body finally overwhelms the heart. Their society — if it can be called that — is run on sudden, casual murder between near-equals, with the survivor stripping the weapons and the small leather pouches the dead kept tied to their straps. They have no economy, breed and grow quickly, and will eat anything — meat, grass roots, ash. They obeyed only the Lord Ruler during his rule, and nobody yet understands quite how. MB1:WoA:Ch 19
The Lord Ruler's monstrous shock troops — larger than men, used at his command to crush rebellions where his soldiery cannot. Kelsier brings them up at the planning table as an obstacle the crew will have to think around. MB1:TFE:Ch 4 superseded at MB1:WoA:Ch 19
Known facts
- trophy-pouchesCarry small coin-sized leather pouches tied to the leather straps that hold their oversized swords; the killer of another koloss takes the dead one's weapons and adds his pouch to his own, the largest warriors accumulating several. Their contents are not yet known.MB1:WoA:Ch 19
- went-rogue-when-lord-ruler-diedAccording to soldiers from both the South and the Northwest who reach the Luthadel palace council, every koloss garrison the empire had stationed across its territory snapped within a day of the Lord Ruler's death, abandoning their posts to ravage the surrounding villages, garrisons, and cities. Cett tried to recruit one garrison near his lands and held it briefly before it turned on him; killing the five-hundred-strong garrison cost him nearly two thousand soldiers. Whatever bound the creatures to obedience died with the Lord Ruler.MB1:WoA:Ch 23
- sacked-suisnaThe koloss army moving south through the Central Dominance reaches and sacks Suisna, a day's march from Luthadel. Its survivors are passed through Straff Venture's barricade as refugees — stripped of food and equipment along the way — and arrive at Luthadel's gates as further drain on the besieged city's supplies.MB1:WoA:Ch 34
- koloss-army-arrives-luthadelJastes Lekal's koloss army finally reaches Luthadel after sacking Suisna and funneling refugees ahead of it, and joins the siege as a third force on the plain — neither attacking Straff nor Cett but waiting. The scout reports give Elend confirmation that Jastes still has enough hold on the koloss to keep them in check, for now.MB1:WoA:Ch 37
- paid-with-fake-boxingsElend discovers, after cutting open a pouch he has taken from a koloss he killed himself, that Jastes Lekal is buying his army's obedience with boxings — counterfeit ones, little wooden discs covered in gold paint that no sane human would accept as money but that koloss take and hoard, with the biggest beasts carrying the largest piles. This is something the Lord Ruler had never done.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- believe-themselves-humanInside Jastes's camp the koloss have begun wearing the clothes they stripped from Suisna's villagers and telling visitors that they are not koloss but humans — that they will live in Luthadel, and that they will kill its people to take it. Whether this is a new derangement or something the Lord Ruler had simply been suppressing, Elend cannot tell.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- not-of-natural-reproductionKoloss do not appear to reproduce in any way humans recognise: no female has ever been observed, no juvenile smaller than the bottom of their size range, no remains that give rise to new ones. They grow throughout life — size implies age — and new ones, Human tells Vin, somehow come from existing koloss.MB1:HoA:Ch 8
- want-to-be-humanEven the more articulate koloss speak with quiet certainty of wanting to become human — taking human cities, killing humans, becoming human in the process. The desire is consistent enough across individuals that Vin finds it as chilling as it is strange.MB1:HoA:Ch 8
- made-from-humans-by-driving-spikes-into-themThe koloss are not a separate race. They are made from human beings. After a cavalry skirmish a Vin-bonded koloss named Human flays a dead member of his band, retrieves four small bloody spikes from beneath the loose folds of skin, and carries them — and the spikes — into the camp's triage tent, where he selects an unconscious soldier and reaches to drive the spikes into him. Vin stops him in his head only when she realises what he is doing. The folds of slack skin on every koloss are pinned in place by these spikes the way nails pin cloth to a wall. Koloss have no young, Human tells her, because the army has never needed any: the koloss replenish themselves by spiking the next batch of captives. The Lord Ruler kept the secret for a thousand years.MB1:HoA:Ch 37
- village-warband-has-no-inquisitor-shepherdA thirty-thousand-strong band of koloss burns through a village on the way to Fadrex with no Inquisitor guiding them — large groups had always been shepherded by one in the past. Their riot is true frenzy, and the fact that Elend can eventually Pull control of the whole mob away with a single duralumin-flared zinc burst suggests no one was holding them at all.MB1:HoA:Ch 51
- allomantic-orders-can-only-be-bluntElend explains the limit of his command over the koloss: he can tell them to attack, freeze, follow, or carry, and that is the ceiling. They cannot deliver a message, name a target by description, or be asked to decide how to do a thing — only to do it.MB1:HoA:Ch 61
Events
- MB1:HoA:Ch 1 Roughly ten thousand strong, marching on Vetitan from the north; at the chapter's close they have begun making camp outside the city when Elend's militia charges out of the gate at them.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 3 Ten thousand of them, attacked from cold camp; they go through the predictable surprise-then-frenzy and then are taken whole, in a single emotional Push under duralumin, by Elend once the Inquisitor running them dies.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 6 A camp of koloss surrounds the gathering of Inquisitors under the falling ash; the beasts are gathered to Ruin's new army with no human master in sight.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 73 Tens of thousands of koloss besieging Fadrex suddenly pull back from the gates and run east toward Luthadel at inhuman speed, Ruin redirecting them away from the city the moment Vin's mistwrap begins.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 81 Follow Human through the tunnels at Ruin's command and crowd up around the empty pit in the Trustwarren, confused, the hoard their master sent them for already gone.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 19 A small patrol of seven surrounds Sazed's aspen while he is up the tree, the largest of them shaking the trunk and ordering him down. He obeys.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 19 Walked past at the borders of Jastes's tent and through the camp on the way out — the human guards keep their hollow free of them.
Relations
- relatedJastes — Elend's camp visit confirms that Jastes Lekal is holding his army together not through the Lord Ruler's old methods but by paying it in counterfeit gold-painted wood — a substitute that works only because koloss do not check. MB1:WoA:Ch 42
