The Lord Ruler
also known as The Lord Ruler
The Terris packman of the logbook — and, a thousand years later, the Lord Ruler himself. He killed his master on the way to the Well, took the power meant for the Hero, and used it to remake the world to his own ends. Slain in Kredik Shaw on the morning of the Luthadel rising. MB1:TFE:Ch 38
The immortal sovereign of the Final Empire, able to wear the body of a handsome young man or a liver-spotted elder at will. Spears driven through his body do not slow him; his passive Soothing smothers every skaa within reach. When he leans close enough to touch Vin's face, she can feel something godlike — power enough to slaughter every soul in Luthadel by himself, tirelessly, without fear of any rebellion. MB1:TFE:Ch 36 superseded at MB1:TFE:Ch 38
The immortal sovereign of the Final Empire, seen in person for the first time at Kelsier's execution: a tall, jet-haired, confident young man in an exaggerated black-and-white coat, every finger ringed. Spears driven through his body do not slow him; his passive Soothing smothers the emotion of every skaa within reach. He claims to have killed Kelsier once already and to have never made a mistake. MB1:TFE:Ch 34 superseded at MB1:TFE:Ch 36
A Terris packman in the unnamed narrator's caravan, named in the logbook. The narrator finds him quietly contemptuous, and worries that a Terrisman of Rashek's bearing has seen through him. MB1:TFE:Ch 21 superseded at MB1:TFE:Ch 34
The immortal sovereign of the Final Empire. He overthrew the world and remade it in ash and mist a thousand years ago. MB1:TFE:Prologue superseded at MB1:TFE:Ch 21
Known facts
- soothing-auraNear the Lord Ruler's person — and inside Kredik Shaw itself — emotions are damped as if by a powerful Soother, smothering hope and resolve in everyone close enough to feel it. Burning copper shields a single Allomancer against the effect.MB1:TFE:Ch 14
- regenerationKelsier tells Dockson that the Lord Ruler shrugs off ordinary wounds — even taking his head off is reported to be no more than a nuisance — and that he once walked out of a burning inn as a skeleton and reknit his flesh in seconds. Two years of searching turned up only the Eleventh Metal story as a way to kill him.MB1:TFE:Ch 15
- persecution-of-terrisThe Lord Ruler has spent his reign trying to erase the Terris — first by genocide, later by a managed breeding program — and tried at one point to ban any Terrisman from touching or owning metal at all, to deny them the use of their art. Sazed suspects the original grudge has something to do with the packman Rashek from his own logbook, but no one alive knows for certain.MB1:TFE:Ch 22
- mass-soothing-at-executionsOn the executions, the Lord Ruler holds tens of thousands of skaa in a Soothing field so deep that even Vin's copper cannot fully shut it out — a wash of flat, willless apathy. By Breeze's practised measure, the strongest Soothers he has ever known can manage a few hundred targets at most. Kelsier has to flare zinc continuously, helped by Vin, just to keep their own small group thinking clearly.MB1:TFE:Ch 26
- atium-market-controlElend explains the economics of the atium market: the Lord Ruler hoards the supply, then releases small quantities at extreme prices, both to fund his own armies and to deny noble houses the metal they need to defend against Mistborn attacks. It is one of the levers by which the Final Empire keeps the nobility leashed.MB1:TFE:Ch 28
- spears-through-body-unaffectedWhen four rebels charge him at Kelsier's execution, the Lord Ruler keeps walking with two spear-shafts protruding from his body, as though their iron were beneath his notice. He pulls one out of himself and uses it to kill Kelsier.MB1:TFE:Ch 34
- shifts-between-young-and-oldThe Lord Ruler Vin sees in his pack-rat den is a wizened, liver-spotted old man in his seventies; the Lord Ruler she is dragged before in the glass spire afterwards is the handsome jet-haired young man who killed Kelsier. She can feel them as the same man.MB1:TFE:Ch 36
- both-allomancer-and-feruchemistStripped to the waist before Vin, the Lord Ruler is plainly both Allomancer and Feruchemist. He carries an open palmful of jewellery — and two bracelets driven through both upper arms so no Push or Pull can take them. Those two are the ones that hold him young.MB1:TFE:Ch 38
- final-warningBefore Vin killed him, the dying Lord Ruler insisted he was still doing something for mankind — and that ending him would end them with him. Vin notices afterwards that he spoke of it in the present tense, as an ongoing task and not a finished one; and that his eyes carried fear, not pride.MB1:TFE:Epilogue
- built-five-numbered-supply-caches-for-the-mistsThe Lord Ruler built five supply caches across the empire — numbered one through five, each rotated and restocked over centuries by his Steel Ministry — for the moment when the mists returned and food failed. Each cache stores tons of preserved food and basics; each contains a steel plate by his hand giving up one Allomantic secret and a map to the next cache. Elend reads in this that the Lord Ruler believed the Deepness could be beaten.MB1:HoA:Ch 5
- hidden-warning-only-your-thoughts-are-safeCarved at the bottom of the Vetitan cache plate in letters small enough that Vin only finds them with tin-enhanced fingertips, the Lord Ruler left a final line: be careful what you speak, it can hear what you say, it can read what you write, only your thoughts are safe. He never left this knowledge in any of the plates' main inscriptions — he meant to hold the power himself again and finish the job — but he left a warning for whoever finally came after.MB1:HoA:Ch 5
- feared-the-deepness-might-outlive-himThe Urteau cache plate reveals that the Lord Ruler wrote it expecting to be dead — that his real plan had been to seize the returning power at the Well himself and keep the Deepness trapped, but he was not certain he would succeed. He confesses the thing had grown subtle and clever inside his own mind, that he could not yet see how it would kill him, but that he worried it might. The caches were his fallback for a world he had failed to save in person.MB1:HoA:Ch 31
- hid-ruins-body-and-left-the-fact-on-the-fadrex-plateThe steel plate in the Fadrex cache is written in the Lord Ruler's own voice, by turns penitent and arrogant. He admits that he does not know how to defeat the thing whose voice has whispered in his head for eight hundred years, hoped only to forestall it by taking the Well's power for himself again when it returned, and adds at the very end the single line that makes the plate worth reading at all — *I have hidden his body well.* Vin grasps at it. Ruin's power is not complete, and the part that is missing is a body that the Lord Ruler has hidden somewhere in the world.MB1:HoA:Ch 48
- bred-feruchemy-out-of-the-terris-population-because-of-his-friendsSazed sees, in TenSoon's reveal, the reason behind a millennium of Terris breeding programs: Rashek knew his old Terris companions could become both Allomancers and Feruchemists as he was, and spent a thousand years driving Feruchemy out of the Terris gene line so that the combination would never appear in another man.MB1:HoA:Ch 62
- rashek-opened-the-ashmounts-to-save-the-worldVin, looking back through the power's memory of its prior wielder, sees what Rashek did at the Well. He pulled the planet toward its sun and overshot, then pushed it back and overshot again, leaving the world alternately freezing and burning. To save it from his own miscalibration he opened the ashmounts and reddened the sun — saving the planet by half-killing it, the doom of the world arising from the same act that preserved it.MB1:HoA:Ch 76
- lord-ruler-protected-the-pits-from-ruinVin sees from above what the empire's atium economy was really for. The Lord Ruler held a thousand years not for vanity but for this: to keep the atium gathered, hidden, and unfindable, so that when Ruin finally walked free he would not be able to take back the chunk of his power that had been siphoned from him at the binding. *You don't know what I do for mankind,* he told her once. Now she does, and she thanks him.MB1:HoA:Ch 79
- planned-well-for-the-end-and-was-honorable-beneath-ruins-influenceIn the postscript-style letter Sazed leaves to Spook, the new god grants Rashek something the skaa rebellion never could: an honest verdict. Rashek suffered terribly beneath Ruin's thousand-year whispering, but he was a good man at root, who planned the storage caverns well enough that far more people fled into them at the end than anyone expected, and whose intentions were honorable.MB1:HoA:Epilogue
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 38 The age stored in the bracelets unwinds out of him: the handsome young man crumples through middle age into a wheezing, white-haired ruin crawling toward the broken window. Vin finishes him with a wooden spear.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Rides into the square in a black carriage drawn by white stallions and sits inside it through the entire execution, never appearing in person — present only as the silhouette inside the open window and the Soothing pressed flat across a hundred thousand skaa.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 34 Steps from a black carriage in the centre of the crowd, walks through four rebels' spears, exchanges a few words with Kelsier about hope, and kills him with a spear pulled from his own body.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 36 Wizened, liver-spotted and seventy-something, the Lord Ruler turns in a pivoting chair beside the hearth in the small building-within-a-building and orders Vin killed before Kar petitions to keep her.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 36 On the elevated throne in the centre of the streaked glass chamber, this time the jet-haired young man who killed Kelsier; tilts Vin's face up to his and reads the truth out of her.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 38 On the throne dismissing the prelans, handing the Ministry to the Canton of Inquisition in person.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 38 Sits the throne and watches Vin's daggers pass through his past-self; calls the rest of the Inquisitors to him, with only mild interest.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 38 Rises from the throne, calls for the rest of his Inquisitors (and finds the spikes Marsh has piled by the door), and breaks Marsh with a single elbow.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 38 Strips his torn coat off, blows every loose metal from the room out through the broken window, and crushes Vin against a pillar with a Push so heavy the metals in her stomach try to rip out of her — while she names him Rashek.
Relations
- relatedkandra — OreSeur tells Vin outright that the Lord Ruler created the kandra during his Ascension, and that they still call him Father. MB1:WoA:Ch 40
