First Generation
also known as the First
The oldest, founding generation of the kandra, to whom the First Contract is owed and from whom the law of the kandra people is reckoned. TenSoon, imprisoned beneath their authority, suspects they have stopped paying it serious heed. MB1:HoA:Ch 2
Known facts
- spoke-aloud-to-lessers-for-the-first-time-in-memoryWhen TenSoon shouts up at their alcoves that they must call the Resolution before the world dies, the First Generation do something they are not known to do — one of them, in a soft, scratchy, tired voice, breaks their long custom of silence in front of lessers and tells KanPaar to proceed. The audience actually gasps. TenSoon is not awed; he has talked with them before they grew too superior to deal with anyone but the Seconds. He is just disappointed.MB1:HoA:Ch 33
- are-the-packmen-who-climbed-to-the-well-with-rashekTenSoon reveals that the First Generation are the original Terris packmen who climbed to the Well of Ascension with Alendi and Rashek. Rashek could not allow them to live as ordinary men — they were powerful Feruchemists, the one thing he feared — and could not bring himself to kill his oldest friends, so while he held the power at the Well he spoke directly into their minds and offered them immortality in exchange for their Feruchemy and their humanity.MB1:HoA:Ch 62
- only-ten-members-the-original-terris-companions-of-rashekThe First Generation is exactly ten kandra — the ten Terris companions Rashek climbed to the Well with. They are the only of his packmen he restored from the mistwraiths he made of the rest of the Terris Feruchemists.MB1:HoA:Ch 68
- wear-their-own-original-terris-bonesThe First Generation wear, beneath their drooping translucent flesh, the ordinary white skeletons of their original Terris bodies. They had not yet the skill or art to make True Bodies when the Lord Ruler first awakened them, so he returned to each of them their own bones, and they have worn them ever since.MB1:HoA:Ch 68
- first-generation-imprisoned-in-pit-cellsThe Seconds did not kill the First Generation outright; they liquefied each Elder and dropped the bare ropes of muscle into the prison-pits that lesser kandra traitors had occupied for centuries, having quietly killed the real prisoners first. To outside eyes nothing changed: the Fifth guards kept feeding the cells, and only a careful look at the colour of the muscles within would have given the swap away.MB1:HoA:Ch 78
Events
- MB1:HoA:Ch 9 Watch in silence from shadowed alcoves running around the upper perimeter of the Trustwarren, so far back into their cells that TenSoon can make out little more than humanoid shapes. They do not speak at the trial; that is what the Seconds are for.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 11 Silent in their shadowed alcoves above. When the judgment lands at the First Contract's clemency-clause point, they offer no motion and no sound — declining, by silence, to stay TenSoon's punishment. TenSoon has not heard them speak in centuries.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 33 Sit lump-shadowed in their alcoves above the Trustwarren floor and remain almost as silent as ever — one of them speaking aloud only to tell KanPaar to proceed with the sentence.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 68 Speak at last from the back of the metal-plated chamber, silencing KanPaar and dismissing the Seconds; shuffle out through a back door — ten ancient figures with canes, white Terris skeletons beneath drooping translucent flesh — and seat themselves to hear what Sazed has come to tell them.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 71 Sit in their alcove chamber with Sazed, lay out the Terris cosmology and the First Contract charge, and finally direct his attention at the metal dais under which the Trust is hidden.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 75 Convene in the Trustwarren with Sazed, explain the Resolution charge to him for the first time, are interrupted by the coup and dragged out gagged alongside him.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 78 Found alive — liquefied muscle in the other prison-pits, the slightly different colours of their flesh giving them away. They will need hours to grow new bodies.
