The Pits of Hathsin
A narrow slot-canyon network of crystalline caverns from the old world, preserved by Harmony at the Catacendre and folded into the Homeland warren beneath Elendel. The slick, knobbed walls still show the empty handholds where crystal geodes once grew, and Harmony has seeded the place with the same blue fungus he gave the Homeland so no one will ever again be lost in the dark down here. MB2:SoS:Ch 21
A network of crystalline rifts in the south of the Final Empire where the Lord Ruler sends his condemned to grope blind in the dark for geodes of atium. The only known source of atium in the empire — and the reason every condemned man is a slave instead of an Allomancer, since drawing Allomantically anywhere near the crystals breaks them, and they take centuries to regrow. A network of crystalline caverns where the Lord Ruler sends his condemned. None are meant to leave; Kelsier is the first to do so. MB1:TFE:Prologue superseded at MB1:TFE:Ch 32
Known facts
- atium-extraction-economyThe Pits yield atium one geode at a time, from crystal-lined pockets at the bottoms of narrow vertical cracks. Allomancy used near the crystals shatters them, so the Lord Ruler sends condemned slaves down instead — a geode a week is the price of another week of life; failure is execution by the taskmasters.MB1:TFE:Ch 21
- crystals-destroyed-corpses-remainSince Kelsier shattered the atium crystals at the end of the Final Empire, no skaa are sent into the cracks to dig for geodes any longer; the cracks themselves remain, the Terris fence them off, and likely hundreds of slaves still lie unrecovered in the deep caverns below them.MB1:HoA:Ch 22
- preserved-in-the-homelandPreserved by Harmony at the Catacendre and folded into the Homeland warren under Elendel — a narrow slot-canyon crack of slick, knobbed wall, the holes where the atium geodes once grew now empty handholds. Harmony made sure the blue fungus spread here too, so nobody would ever again be trapped in this place in the dark. The crack opens out at the top into the modern city sewers; Wax and TenSoon climb out of the Homeland through it.MB2:SoS:Ch 21
