Demoux
A quiet, solemn off-worlder travelling Roshar with Galladon and Baon on errands of their own. Carries the bearing of a soldier long in service; sits at the shop table in Iri listening more than speaking, and tips a full broam to a local apprentice in exchange for what she can tell him about an *intelligent spren*. SA:WaT:I-11
A young, very neatly uniformed captain of the Keep Venture palace guard, serving as Ham's second-in-command. Carries himself with more formality than Ham himself ever bothers to — handles discreet investigations inside the palace, reports directly to the king, and tries to do all of it without disturbing anyone unnecessarily. MB1:WoA:Ch 11 superseded at SA:WaT:I-11
A young captain in General Hammond's cave army, barely past twenty, with a solemnity that belies his rank. Meets Kelsier at the canal crossroads with a small squad and guides the new recruits down into the caverns. MB1:TFE:Ch 21 superseded at MB1:WoA:Ch 11
Known facts
- stayed-back-in-cavesSome two thousand soldiers — Captain Demoux among them — refused to march with Yeden on the Holstep Garrison and stayed behind in the caves out of loyalty to Kelsier. Demoux confesses to Kelsier that he had thought Yeden rash; Kelsier tells him the rest of the army is dead and walks them all out of the caves before Ministry forces can find them.MB1:TFE:Ch 25
- survivor-preacherVin tails him out of the palace at night expecting to catch a kandra making a drop, and instead finds a quiet bonfire in a square where Demoux is one of the established preachers of the Church of the Survivor — not a shouter in the Survivor's mould, but a calm, hesitant youth whom the gathered skaa listen to as if he were a priest. He believes, sincerely, that he felt Kelsier working through his arm in the Pits-camp duel and that he sometimes still does, and he avoids telling the rest of the crew because they would mock the faith.MB1:WoA:Ch 36
- falls-to-mist-sickness-during-inoculationDemoux proves susceptible to mist sickness — collapsing from his saddle and convulsing in the ash beside his horse during Elend's mass exposure of the army on the road to Fadrex. Elend, who had assumed without thinking that his closest soldiers were already immune, is left kneeling beside him as the inoculation unfolds across the field.MB1:HoA:Ch 17
- among-the-late-recovering-mist-sickDemoux is one of three hundred and twenty-seven men in Elend's army whom the sickness did not release with the others. He spent sixteen days down with it, to the hour, and rose convinced the Survivor himself had picked him for the punishment. He asks to step down as general on the grounds that a man the Survivor has cursed should not lead Survivor's soldiers; Elend refuses him and, with a touch of Soothing, turns the same fact around — that the camp's most devout man fell sick is itself proof that faith was never the test.MB1:HoA:Ch 36
- demoux-soldiers-are-snapped-mistingsElend tells Demoux that the mist sickness he and his men suffered was actually Snapping — the men are now Mistings — and to feed them Allomantic metals and sort them by what they can burn. The camp will need every Coinshot, Thug, and Lurcher he can muster against the oncoming koloss.MB1:HoA:Ch 80
- soldiers-are-seersElend finally explains the long mist sickness of Demoux's men: one-in-sixteen of his sample fell ill the longest because atium is one of the sixteen Allomantic metals, and they had been Snapped into the rarest of Mistings — the Seer, an atium Misting the Lord Ruler had hidden the existence of. Demoux's two hundred and eighty become the Trustwarren's only viable defenders.MB1:HoA:Ch 81
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 21 Greets Kelsier at the forest with his squad and brings the new recruits down into the caves; at the feast Kelsier picks him out of the volunteers as the champion to face Bilg, and wins the duel for him by Push and Pull on the blades.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 25 Holds the inner corridor of the caves with two thousand men who would not march under Yeden. Lowers his spear when Kelsier steps into the torchlight, and confesses he had thought himself loyal by staying.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 8 Greets Elend and Vin in well-used leather-and-steel armour, the Survivor's silver spear hanging openly at his throat. Reports the canal dredged, the camp held against nothing in particular, and the route to Luthadel clear for barges.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 12 Sits with Ham; reports on the steel-inscribed message Spook sent from Urteau — that the faction holding the city is a hardline skaa rebellion — and is told to pass the march order to the men.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 17 Rides at Elend's side on a roan stallion during the inoculation muster; presses Elend privately on whether he believes what he just preached about the Survivor and lays out a formal theology of Kelsier's investiture at the Pits; then collapses from his saddle into the ash as the mists rise and the sickness takes him.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 36 Back on his feet for the first time in weeks, still pale and visibly thinned by the sickness. Lingers after the morning briefing to ask Elend to release him from his generalship, then walks Elend through the three-sixteens pattern — sixteen out of every hundred soldiers fell sick, one of every sixteen of those did not rise with the others, and the late-rising ones lay down for sixteen days exactly — as proof he was singled out. Elend sends him away told instead to find what really shaped the sickness.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 40 At the briefing and after. Lingers to tell Elend what Ham has already raised — that the mistfallen are eating apart from the camp and the wider army is starting to distrust the men he leads — and to advise that whether they should be reintegrated depends on whether Elend intends to attack Fadrex soon. Takes Elend's order to organise the mistfallen into their own company under his command.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 47 Walks into a brawl between regular soldiers and mistfallen at a cooking fire and is punched square in the face by one of the brawlers. Accepts Elend's orders without complaint to march roughly three hundred men back to Luthadel to reinforce Penrod.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 79 Greets Elend at the Pits perimeter with the soldiers sent back from Fadrex — has been holding the camp together since Penrod's death.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 80 Walks the Pits camp with Elend and briefs him on Luthadel's fall; later, vouches for the soldiers who claim to have seen the Survivor and accompanies Elend into the Homeland.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 81 Reports the indefensible numbers to Elend; receives a bead of atium from him and burns it — the first of Demoux's men to be revealed as a Seer.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 82 Crawled back into the cavern entrance bloody and crippled, waiting for the Terris woman who has been tending him to return with bandages, slipping in and out of consciousness as Sazed holds vigil for Vin's return.
- MB1:HoA:Epilogue Healed, standing near the slanted Homeland entrance with a Terris woman on his arm, recounting the vision of the Survivor he saw in the sky while the world was being remade.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 11 Meets Elend in the courtyard to report a corpse in Vin's chambers, then leads them down the hall to a second, hidden skeleton found by dogs.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 13 Knocks at the door once the meeting has broken and brings in the Terriswoman his men caught listening from the next room.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 16 Knocks on the study door to deliver the news that a messenger from Straff is waiting, and freezes a moment when he sees what Elend is now wearing.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 20 Knocks to deliver the news that Cett's daughter has arrived at the palace asking for Breeze — looking a little embarrassed about it.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 26 Pokes his head into Elend's chamber to announce that Straff's carriage has arrived.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 28 Present at the study meeting as Clubs's captain, among the crew weighing how to respond to the deposition.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 33 Crosses the Keep Venture courtyard in the dark, without lantern, moving as if he does not want to be seen, then enters the palace through a servants' door and greets the guards posted there. Vin picks him out and decides he is the kandra spy on the crew.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Captains the two-hundred-soldier escort on the trip to Keep Hasting. Vin, convinced he is the kandra spy, deliberately keeps her face composed and lets him stay close — better to know where the impostor is than to play her hand now.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Holds the Keep Hasting entry hall with the bulk of Elend's escort while the dinner proceeds upstairs. Vin keeps her glare off him.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 36 Slips out of the palace alone, walks the city to a skaa bonfire gathering, and preaches the Church of the Survivor — including a new doctrine that Vin will restore the sun, the green, and the blue sky.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 36 Meets Vin in the dark alley behind the bonfire, admits he is a believer, and asks her to keep his role from the rest of the crew — she agrees to tell only Elend.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Sits in the skaa block with Ham as part of the coordinated push for Elend's joining of the Church; the attack leaves him stranded in the crowd.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 41 Stands bodyguard for the dethroned Elend on the keep balcony and in the corridors, reminds him gently of the Survivor rally scheduled for that night, and is reassured that Elend still intends to attend it.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 42 Works the keep landing with Elend, passes the orders out to the volunteer crews, and brings Larn forward to swear to the Inquisitor sighting.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 49 Asks the Survivor to protect the departing riders, and is sent away from the wall by Clubs for preaching to his men.
- SA:WaT:I-11 Sits quietly at the shop table in Iri while Baon orders and Galladon grumbles; tips Dyel a full broam to answer questions about an "intelligent spren."
