Stable Nightmare
also known as Liyun
A nightmare that has fed enough times to coalesce into a solid persistent shape — but on Painter's world, *every* settled nightmare may be one. In the town the scholars have built around their machine, every face Yumi has lived among for weeks — her attendants, her townspeople, the scholars themselves, and her warden — is a stable nightmare given a human shape and let to *be* that shape by the machine. Removed from the machine they revert to wisps with white-pit eyes. The lupine creature Painter has been hunting in Kilahito is one of these: the warden Liyun herself. STD:YNP:Ch 34
A nightmare that has fed enough times — roughly ten — to coalesce into a solid, persistent shape rather than a wisp of darkness. A fully stable one can act with intent and slaughter hundreds; the city of Futinoro was wiped out by them thirty years before the story. Bringing one down is beyond an ordinary nightmare painter; a specialised corps called the Dreamwatch travels between towns to hunt the few sightings that do occur. STD:YNP:Ch 7 superseded at STD:YNP:Ch 34
Yumi's warden — kihomaban — a tall, severe woman in a black tobok and a white bow, with hair cut bladelike about her face. Half guardian and half sponsor, she sets Yumi's schedule, vets her supplicants, and quietly keeps her in line. Even at rest there is a demanding edge to the way she stands. STD:YNP:Ch 2 superseded at STD:YNP:Ch 7
Known facts
- suspects-she-is-failingAfter Yumi's thirty-seven-spirit summoning, she warns the half-collapsed yoki-hijo that the record will make villages suspect Yumi of having held back in their towns. Departing, she pauses to confess, with an oddly haunted note in her voice, that she feels this will happen again unless she does something — that she is failing as warden and may seek advice.STD:YNP:Ch 6
- orthodox-warden-hid-reform-from-yumiLiyun belongs to the orthodox minority of yoki-hijo wardens and has deliberately raised Yumi in ignorance of the centuries-old reform movement — concedes the fact, calls reform a destructive choice, and treats hiding it as her duty to preserve tradition.STD:YNP:Ch 22
- stable-nightmares-call-to-othersPainter explains that when one nightmare reaches stability it calls to others, and that whole cities have been overrun this way — the most recent perhaps decades ago, with only scattered survivors and a tally of dozens of nightmares rampaging at once. The mechanism is not understood; the precedent is what makes the Dreamwatch's response so severe.STD:YNP:Ch 25
- came-looking-for-yumi-and-painterThe stable nightmare is now fully stable — eleven feet tall, with claws that gouge stone and a mouth of actual teeth — and instead of attacking the city at large, it has come looking for Yumi and Painter in person on a quiet residential street.STD:YNP:Ch 28
- tracks-yumi-by-her-investitureThe stable nightmare is the reason for the weeks of skulking: it has been able to *feel* Yumi's presence the whole time and has been drawn to her, biding for a chance to attack. Where ordinary nightmares only lap at a sleeper's mind, Yumi's soul is rich enough to guzzle from — and the nightmare knows it.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- claws-go-incorporeal-to-drain-soulRather than rending Yumi physically, the stable nightmare lets its claws fuzz incorporeal as they meet her chest and uses the breach to draw her essence out directly — felt as an expanding icy cold from the heart that spreads through the body and exhales as a cold mist.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- can-be-driven-back-by-painted-visionPainter does not banish the stable nightmare outright — he forces it to *conform* to a friendly four-legged creature he paints around it on the concrete. Its skeleton seems to pop and shrink, its claws shorten, its face narrows; only by howling out a fully articulated cry and breaking from his spell does it manage to restore its true form and flee. Defeated and embarrassed, but not destroyed.STD:YNP:Ch 29
- forgetful-after-the-machine-firedWith the machine re-engaged, Liyun is bleary and forgetful. She informs Yumi of small itinerary changes she normally would not mention, cannot remember why they skipped Ihosen, and excuses herself from the evening rituals to do something she also cannot fully remember — *someone must be dealt with* — almost certainly the hunt for the now-freed Painter.STD:YNP:Ch 35
- machine-dispatches-an-army-of-stable-nightmares-to-kilahitoTo suppress what Painter now knows, the machine is sending a hundred fed-and-strengthened stable nightmares west to Kilahito — the same kind of strike that flattened Futinoro — led by one who does not know him and cannot be reached the way Liyun was.STD:YNP:Ch 36
- a-piece-of-her-survives-each-night-as-the-nightmareEven after the machine strips her shape and memory each night, a piece of Liyun persists inside the nightmare she becomes; she recognises Painter, remembers her sworn duty when reminded, and speaks in her own voice once the stones hold her attention. She tells him she desperately wants to be a person again — *so badly, it has been so long.*STD:YNP:Ch 36
- keeper-soul-released-from-shroud-to-play-her-old-roleLiyun is — and has been for seventeen centuries — the actual soul of the woman who raised Yumi before the machine's activation. Released from the shroud under partial machine compulsion to play her old role in Yumi's prison, partially given self-governance, with memory erased each day. At night, when the machine's attention slackens, she and the other warden-souls lose shape and prowl as nightmares, hunting for the lives they have lost.STD:YNP:Ch 39
Events
- STD:YNP:Ch 7 Crouches over a sleeping child in a tenement room — lupine, long-necked, bone-white eyes drawn in chalk and a matching smile, claws that gouge stone as it pulls itself through the wall — and flees rather than fight when Painter paints the child's mother in answer.
- STD:YNP:Ch 19 Lurks across the street from Painter's apartment in the rain — a darkness in an alley that brushes brick with too-real substance and leaves wisps of smoke trailing upward like a snuffed candle. Yumi notices the pooling shadow from the window but doesn't look closely enough to see it, and turns away to return to her practice.
- STD:YNP:Ch 28 Emerges fully stable from a side alley — eleven feet of jagged blackness, claws raking gouges down the wall, eyes like pits of white, mouth set with actual teeth — and is not hunting at random; it has come looking specifically for Yumi and Painter.
- STD:YNP:Ch 29 Charges after Yumi and Painter, its nails grinding metal-on-stone, rips through a jungle gym and hurls a chunk of it that knocks Yumi flat — but flinches back when spilled ink from her cracked jar stains the asphalt.
- STD:YNP:Ch 29 Emerges from inside a broken jungle-gym and grows to its full eleven feet behind Yumi, rams a clawed paw through her chest that fuzzes incorporeal as it strikes so it can drink her essence directly, hesitates at her stacked stones, turns to slaughter Akane and Tojin instead — and is driven step by step backward by Painter's silver brush, finally howling in articulate fury and loping away into the night.
- STD:YNP:Ch 2 Approaches Yumi at the shrine to fetch her for the place of ritual, redirects her tentative request about the festival into a more proper-sounding wish, and reminds her that she is one of only fourteen yoki-hijo currently chosen.
- STD:YNP:Ch 4 Stands outside the place of ritual's fence while Yumi works, screens the supplicants, and at the end finds her collapsed unconscious on the stone.
- STD:YNP:Ch 6 Enters Yumi's wagon at night while she is still recovering, lectures her on pacing and on appearing as a resource to the land, then pauses on her way out to confess she feels she is failing as warden.
- STD:YNP:Ch 9 Sweeps up into the wagon dressed in yellow on black for the fourth day of the month, reads the morning's disturbance as her Chosen attempting to escape her duties through fabricated nonsense, and warns that the guilt of such lies will tear her apart inside — leaving Painter (in Yumi's shape) to recite the apology Yumi dictates word for word.
- STD:YNP:Ch 10 Escorts the procession from the wagon up to the cool spring and waits with the townspeople below; her presence keeps Painter from breaking the spirit illusion in front of the attendants.
- STD:YNP:Ch 12 Kneels across from the body she still believes to be the yoki-hijo and demands an accounting for yesterday's faint; accepts the ritual apology Yumi dictates through Painter.
- STD:YNP:Ch 12 Leads the procession from the wagon up toward the cool spring, halting respectfully when Painter gawks at the steamwell.
- STD:YNP:Ch 13 Notes the cultivated trees and the spirit statues on the shrine's roof with a brief frown, then bows out to leave the yoki-hijo her prayers.
- STD:YNP:Ch 13 Watches the ritual ground from the edge with a slack-jawed horror as the yoki-hijo fails her first stack.
- STD:YNP:Ch 18 Strides up the path to the spring after the bath, kneels in matching apology, accepts the (Yumi-prompted) explanation that the yoki-hijo needs time to relearn her art, and offers to beg the town for the use of their place of ritual.
- STD:YNP:Ch 18 Has cleared away the gawkers and fetched gloves for Painter from the local town; watches the day's stone-weighing from the fence with a few of the town's elders looking on.
- STD:YNP:Ch 19 Stands outside the fence of the place of ritual for almost the entire training day, expression darkening from her usual unflappability into something Yumi reads as contemplating sending for the executors who could remove her yoki-hijo from duty.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Sweeps into the wagon in a maroon bell-gown, finds Painter feeding himself, and registers her disapproval in surgically polite increments before being dismissed.
- STD:YNP:Ch 22 Roosts near Painter's stacks like waiting carrion, reveals she has long known about machines like the scholars' and considers them blasphemy, then leaves before lunch.
- STD:YNP:Ch 23 Knocks (a startling courtesy) and kneels in a posture of technical apology, concedes the existence of the reform movement without softening, and warns Yumi that visiting her birth family would have destroyed her.
- STD:YNP:Ch 24 Folds her arms over a Painter suspiciously sweaty and twig-haired from "praying"; later shouts down the lead scholar with the maths of yoki-hijo productivity, and is answered with the maths of one machine per village.
- STD:YNP:Ch 31 Watches from outside the fence — haggard and worn lately, but in tears at the sight of her yoki-hijo stacking again. To her it looks like the spirits have given Yumi back.
- STD:YNP:Ch 34 Delivers the rolled wagon-driver map of Torio that Painter asked for; leaves the shrine near tears at his unexpected gentleness toward her.
- STD:YNP:Ch 34 Warns Yumi (through Painter) of the cost — removal, life under lock and key, the warden's own disgrace — then bows the deepest bow she knows. *We are your servants.*
- STD:YNP:Ch 35 Waiting unusually at the shrine before the rituals are done — bleary, forgetful, unable to remember why they skipped Ihosen or what tonight's errand is. *Someone must be dealt with.*
- STD:YNP:Ch 36 Appears as the boulder-shaped lupine nightmare in the alley by the playground; freezes at her name, kneels at the stacks, speaks in Liyun's own voice, takes Painter's folded painting between two claws, and warns him of the coming army before slipping back into the dark.
- STD:YNP:Ch 37 Opens the wagon door herself — bow untied, hair messy — to tell Yumi the town is sick, distractedly grants the festival request, gropes for the duty she cannot quite remember, drops Painter's painting on the floor of the wagon, and flees.
- STD:YNP:Ch 40 Arrives at the head of the next nightmare wave — fifteen feet of jagged smoky lupine; Painter paints her as the stern, twin-bladed-haired woman she actually is and she does not revert. Kneels outside the ring of painters, hands stained in spilled ink, gasping.
- STD:YNP:Ch 41 Among the restored Torish villagers being tended outside Kilahito; meets Painter's eyes, grins, lifts her face to the sky, and fades.
