Edwarn Ladrian
also known as Mister Suit
Wax's uncle — alive after all, beard shaved and hair changed since his faked carriage death — and the masked director of the Set who has been known to Miles' crew only as Mister Suit. Has used the Vanisher robberies to engineer House Tekiel's collapse for an insurance fraud, holds Wax's sister Telsin in his keeping, and travels with nearly twenty Allomancers of his own. MB2:AoL:Epilogue
A round-faced, grey-bearded man in expensive black silk and a turquoise vest who funds and directs the Vanishers from behind the scenes. Renounced his noble title — though, as he notes, not his privilege — and keeps a private office in Miles' new underground hideout. He brings Miles the schematics for Tekiel's new "unrobbable" freight car and tells him plainly that the planning is Suit's job and the execution Miles'. MB2:AoL:Ch 11 superseded at MB2:AoL:Epilogue
The previous High Lord Ladrian — Wax's uncle and predecessor. Reclusive, occasionally reckless in politics, and a quietly successful gambler at the racetracks; nevertheless ran the house's business and finances into near-bankruptcy before his death. MB2:AoL:Ch 3 superseded at MB2:AoL:Ch 11
Known facts
- died-in-accident-with-telsinDied in the accident that also killed Telsin Ladrian, leaving the High Lordship of House Ladrian to be recalled out of the Roughs in the person of his nephew Wax.MB2:AoL:Ch 3
- faked-deathFaked the carriage wreck that supposedly killed him, shaved his beard, and changed his hair to keep moving among Elendel's elite as a different man — the figure Miles' crew know only as Mister Suit. He all but says it on the train: the butler who tried to blow up Wax in the Ladrian Mansion was still working for him, not for the Vanishers.MB2:AoL:Epilogue
- declined-winsting-auctionWas invited to Winsting Innate's Senate-vote auction in the Fourth Octant and pointedly did not attend, despite Winsting having expected him to bid.MB2:SoS:Ch 1
- predatory-lending-doctrineBuilt his career at First Central Bank on a doctrine he summarised for twelve-year-old Wax as *only expectation has value as currency* — lending aggressively to common workers on terms that let the bank garnish their wages, and their sons' wages, when they fell behind, while wealthy clients banked at three percent and the poor at twelve. He called it a revolution; Wax called it making slaves.MB2:SoS:Ch 8
- sold-bank-before-faking-deathSold off House Ladrian's stake in First Central Bank for capital before gutting the house and faking his death — Wax retells the chronology to Steris in the coach to ZoBell Tower.MB2:SoS:Ch 8
- riding-the-bleeder-stormAdmits to Wax in the coach that the Set are *riding the storm* of Bleeder's killings rather than running it — and that within the Set he himself is the conservative voice losing ground, as Wax's campaign hardens the radicals' position.MB2:SoS:Ch 17
- holds-wax-sister-hostageConfirms in plain terms that he is holding Wax's sister captive precisely because he expects to need her as leverage one day — *kill me, and your sister is as good as dead, Waxillium* — and uses the threat to send Wax out of his coach unshot.MB2:SoS:Ch 17
- knows-wax-better-than-twenty-years-apart-explainsEavesdropping at the Shores mansion, Wax hears his uncle reliably predict his behaviour — that he cannot resist a personal grudge, and would have taken the bait of the train robbery if he had not been busy at the Bands lead — and concludes Edwarn knows him too well for a man he has barely seen in twenty years.MB2:BoM:Ch 15
- walked-into-temple-under-parleyEdwarn places himself alone in his nephew's gun at the temple entrance under a parley flag — not because he is in danger but because he has, by his own count, twenty trained Allomancers and Feruchemists camped outside who would shoot through him to kill Wax if asked. He demonstrates the calculus by carrying a metal-banded cane, no aluminum, into Wax's reach — and by smiling.MB2:BoM:Ch 25
- hemalurgically-spiked-allomancerSuit is an Allomancer by way of Hemalurgy — Wax glimpses the small spike between two of his ribs through a torn shirt in the Sovereign's temple after his uncle Pushes Marasi's rifle out of her hands. He later explains that the Set's spike program limits one body to three boons, lest Harmony interfere.MB2:BoM:Ch 26
- leecher-via-hemalurgyOn the bridge of the Hunters' airship, grappling with Wax after the duel, Suit reveals one of his three spike boons is Leecher: he can drain the metals from anyone who touches him. He boasts that this defeats Wax; it doesn't, because Wax is also a Terrisman.MB2:BoM:Ch 29
- killed-in-cellTwo weeks into his captivity in Elendel, Suit is killed in his cell by a red-eyed servant of Trell using one of Irich's early experimental explosives — the Set sacrificed by Trell in favour of an accelerated timeline that no longer requires its hierarchy.MB2:BoM:Epilogue
Events
- MB2:AoL:Epilogue Walks in on a whale-ivory cane, takes a glass of wine from a passing servant, and walks Wax through the Tekiel insurance-fraud play with growing pleasure.
- MB2:AoL:Epilogue Calls in the Set's Allomancers from the corridor, has Wax thrown off the back of the train, and never notices the appointment book missing from his table.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 25 Walks alone under a parley flag, doffs hood and parka in the vestibule to reveal trousers and suspenders and a silver-and-black head of hair, lights his pipe off Steris's lantern, and conducts the negotiation seated on the stone shelf.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 25 Calls out which of the silver-inlaid symbols to Push and in what order; warns that wrong answers freeze the door for ten years; sniffs at Wax's attempt to keep him out of the inner chamber.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 25 Sauntered in trailing pipe smoke beside Wax — and stops at sight of the empty dais. The first crack in his pleasant smile of the evening.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 26 Reveals himself as a Hemalurgically spiked Coinshot, Pushes Marasi's rifle out of her hands, and at Telsin's order drops down the pit after Wax.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 27 Tracks Wax's blood through the lower chamber, talks doctrine at him while closing, steps deliberately onto the ceiling trap to crush him, takes the decoy bracers and finds them dead. Driven off by Wayne's arrival.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 27 Drops from the air onto the snow plateau and hands Telsin the decoy bracers; reports Wax dead.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 28 Flung by Marasi's Push on the spike in his ribs.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 29 Alone on the half-oval bridge, lighting his pipe to hide a coin in his mouth, waiting for Wax to break through the window.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 29 Tells Wax he has armed the bomb, calls down the speaking tube to disarm it after Wax throws the Bands out the window, sets up the duel.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 29 Wins the draw, takes Wax's charge full-body, falls with him through the airship floor; Pushes a coin to slow the impact; takes Wax's punch and goes down on the snow.
- MB2:BoM:Ch 30 Tied to the top of the Lord Ruler's statue by the feet, gagged, metalminds removed, metals leeched out — a fixture above the negotiation.
- MB2:SoS:Ch 8 Steers his twelve-year-old nephew through the bank in carriage, lecture and viewing room, presenting predatory lending as a revolution and the defective coin as a parting gift.
- MB2:SoS:Ch 17 Comes in person to Wax's dead-drop summons; receives Wax alone in his coach, lights a pipe, confirms the Set are riding Bleeder's storm rather than running it, and reminds Wax that killing him forfeits Wax's sister.
- MB2:AoL:Ch 11 Receives Miles in his office, rebukes him for losing his temper at the wedding, and hands him the schematics for House Tekiel's new "unrobbable" freight car for the next heist
- MB2:AoL:Ch 15 Walks Miles through the new forging hall, attaches two Set minders to him for the night, warns that the Set is anxious and short of cash, then departs the city on his regular train.
