Lord Penrod
also known as Ferson Penrod
The senior nobleman remaining on the Luthadel Assembly after the Collapse — a politically conservative elder statesman with a composed manner, never heard to speak disparagingly of the skaa, and consequently more popular with the common people than most of his peers. The other nobles defer to him; Vin thinks he carries more weight in the chamber than Elend does. MB1:WoA:Ch 10
Known facts
- first-chancellorElected the first chancellor of the Luthadel Assembly on Elend Venture's own nomination, at the meeting where Elend returned after his deposition to address the chamber.MB1:WoA:Ch 31
- elected-king-of-luthadelVoting reconvenes at Penrod's own mansion after the Assembly Hall attack and seats him as king of Luthadel by seventeen votes to seven. Elend Venture himself explains the clause that lets the two Cett voters change their ballots to him, closing the deadlock; Elend sets his crown on Penrod's mantelpiece and leaves without looking back.MB1:WoA:Ch 38
- deal-with-straffWithin hours of being seated as king, Penrod rides out alone with fifty men in the mist to meet Straff Venture beneath Luthadel's walls and promises to deliver the city to him — Philen's merchants are to keep the titles Cett offered them, and Penrod is to lower himself in deference and look for the atium cache. Straff hints he might let him keep the crown as a subject king under a Lord Ruler-style empire.MB1:WoA:Ch 39
- yields-command-of-luthadel-to-vinFaced with Vin raised to his eye-level by a koloss outside Keep Hasting, Penrod accepts her orders without argument — fans his surviving two hundred garrison out to protect the population rather than fight, and sends messengers to her for each band of raiders loose in the city. He had earlier said by taking the Venture boy's throne he had saved his life and ended his own.MB1:WoA:Ch 54
- swears-luthadel-throne-to-elendKneeling in the snow at Vin's gesture, Penrod yields the crown he had taken from Elend in the Assembly vote and swears the city back to Elend Venture.MB1:WoA:Ch 55
Events
- MB1:WoA:Ch 10 Speaks last and bluntly — Luthadel is in no position to bargain with Straff, so the best they can do is meet him and try to wring concessions. The other noblemen swing behind him and the proposal passes.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 10 Tells Elend during the break that he did not support the proposal for the king's sake but to keep Philen from giving the city away before the nobility could extract guarantees from Straff about their titles.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 31 Arrives at the chamber, is elected first chancellor of the Assembly on Elend's nomination, and in turn nominates Elend for the contested throne.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 32 Presides as chancellor, grants Cett his time, calls the residency vote, and afterward — outside the chamber — tells Elend flatly that if it comes to a choice between Cett and Straff he will vote for Cett because the Lord Ruler's system kept the people safe and Elend's ideals cannot.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Presides at the lectern as Chancellor, opens the meeting, votes for himself, and is shielded by his guards in the scattering crowd once the attack begins.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Hosts the rescheduled vote in his own lounge, opens it with a vote for himself, closes the voting once Habren and the other Cett voter swing to him, and accepts the appointment as king of Luthadel.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 39 Rides out from the city with fifty soldiers and a quiet pride that Straff cuts down by stages until Penrod addresses him as "my lord." Agrees to look for the atium cache.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 54 Appears on Keep Hasting's wall in Elend's thin crown, refuses to open the gates or to lead a breakout, explains his Tineye has watched the koloss slaughter the group Sazed sent out the northern gate, and admits that by taking the Venture boy's throne he saved his life and ended his own.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 54 Watches from Keep Hasting's wall as a koloss raises Vin to his eye level, and accepts her orders without argument — fans the two hundred surviving garrison out to protect the population rather than fight, and to send messengers to her for each band of raiders.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 55 Approaches at Vin's back with an honor guard, dismounts on her gesture, kneels in the snow, and swears his loyalty to Elend Venture — yielding the crown he had taken in the Venture boy's absence.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Plays the mediator between Cett and Janarle; proposes the three of them accept Elend's rule outright in return for keeping their thrones long-term.
Relations
- relatedStraff Venture — Penrod secretly contracts to deliver Luthadel to Straff Venture in exchange for honouring the merchant titles and possibly retaining the crown as a subject king. MB1:WoA:Ch 39
