The Mist
The nightly fog of the broken empire — now also a thing that appears in valleys during the day and refuses to leave, sometimes for weeks at a stretch. The day mist kills some people who go out in it outright, drops others to the ground in convulsions before letting them rise again, and lets still others pass through it untouched, with no rule Sazed can yet name. A skaa village trapped indoors by it would rather starve than walk into it. The Lord Ruler is no longer in the world to explain what has changed. MB1:WoA:Ch 15
The nightly fog of the broken empire. The skaa still fear it; Vin knows it answers Allomancers; and now it has begun to appear in valleys during the day, taking hold of anyone caught out in it. The bodies twist for a few seconds and stop moving. The Lord Ruler is no longer in the world to explain what has changed. MB1:WoA:Ch 4 superseded at MB1:WoA:Ch 15
The nightly fog of the Final Empire. The skaa still fear it, but Vin knows it now answers Allomancers — it swirls when they burn, and the oldest of the Terris legends say Allomancers first appeared with the mists themselves. Once, in the throne room, it answered a Pull with power Vin had no business having. She has not been able to do it again. MB1:TFE:Epilogue superseded at MB1:WoA:Ch 4
A thick fog that rises across the Final Empire every night and disperses by morning. The skaa fear it deeply and will not venture outside after dark; their dread of it is what the Lord Ruler partly relies on to keep them in their hovels at night. MB1:TFE:Prologue superseded at MB1:TFE:Epilogue
Known facts
- day-mist-selectively-killsAt Urbene the day mist is shown not to kill every person it touches the same way. Some villagers it dropped writhing to the ground and stopped them moving; some it knocked down and let rise again; some it let walk straight out of the village unharmed. The survivors called back to the rest that it had not taken them; the rest stayed inside until they starved.MB1:WoA:Ch 15
- appears-by-day-and-killsSazed reports to the palace council that he has interviewed witnesses to a new phenomenon in the Outer Dominances: the mist — distinct from ordinary fog by its thickness, its river-like movement, and its refusal to remain inside buildings or tents — has been appearing during full daylight and, more strangely, killing people. Witness accounts converge: the mist curls around a single victim, who seizes and dies on the spot. The events are concentrated in the Outer Dominances and the wave is moving inward. He found one incident south of Luthadel in which an entire village was trapped in its hovels by the mist. Sazed cannot explain the connection but suspects the Lord Ruler's death is its cause.MB1:WoA:Ch 23
- now-kills-people-at-randomFrom the night Vin released the Well, the mists routinely kill people who go out at night across the former empire — with no discernible pattern. Most struck by them only sicken; some die outright; others move through them with no effect at all.MB1:WoA:Epilogue
- killing-during-daySince the Well was opened, the mists have begun to appear during the day, retreating a little later each evening and arriving a little earlier — and they have begun to kill. Roughly one person in six caught in them takes a seizure; a fraction of those die. Survivors are immune thereafter. Animals are unaffected.MB1:HoA:Ch 8
- are-drawn-into-vin-from-across-the-empireFrom four points across the empire — TenSoon east of the Homeland, Breeze in Urteau, Elend over Fadrex, and the open air above Luthadel — the mists stop swirling and begin flowing in a single direction. At Kredik Shaw they spiral down toward Vin in a funnel a continent wide, leak from her own skin, and are drawn back into her body until none remain. The starlit night that follows is mistless for the first time anyone alive remembers.MB1:HoA:Ch 73
- vanish-from-the-empire-day-and-nightThe morning after Vin draws the mists into herself at Kredik Shaw, the mists do not return — at Fadrex Elend and Yomen note their absence in both day and night, and skaa who had finally accepted spending the night outdoors begin hiding again because the long-feared thing's absence is even more unnatural than its presence.MB1:HoA:Ch 74
