Hero of Ages
The prophesied saviour of the Terris religion, foretold to come to the Well of Ascension, take its power, and selflessly give it up to deliver the land from the Deepness — and, Sazed now suspects, a fabrication. The actual original line on Kwaan's steel plate warns against releasing the thing imprisoned at the Well, not against taking the power for oneself. The prophecies appear to have been silently rewritten over centuries by something that needed a willing hero to free it. MB1:WoA:Epilogue
A figure of Terris prophecy whose coming was foretold to defeat the Deepness at the Well of Ascension. The unnamed journal-narrator was declared to be the Hero in his own day; Rashek killed him on the way and took the power. What was really meant by the prophecy — and whether the Deepness was ever truly stopped — neither Sazed nor Vin can yet say. MB1:TFE:Epilogue superseded at MB1:WoA:Epilogue
A figure of Terris prophecy whose coming was foretold before the Ascension — described as belonging to no nation, no spouse, and beyond the reach of kings. The unnamed narrator of the journal Sazed is translating was declared to be this Hero in his own day, and was not convinced of it himself. MB1:TFE:Ch 21 superseded at MB1:TFE:Epilogue
Known facts
- terris-pronoun-is-gender-neutralSazed notices late in his own draft that the Terris pronoun rendered as "he" in every modern translation of the Hero of Ages prophecies is, in the original, grammatically neuter — "it." The prophesied figure could as easily be a woman, and he for the first time takes seriously that Vin might be the one foretold.MB1:WoA:Ch 45
- was-sazed-not-alendi-or-vin-and-is-a-hero-who-spans-the-agesThe prophecy translated as *Hero of Ages* never meant a hero who would come *once in the ages.* It meant a hero who would *span* them — a single mind, watching over mankind across all its lives and times. Neither Alendi nor Rashek nor Vin was the answer. They were stages along the way. The hero is Sazed, who takes both powers at once and becomes the ongoing god Harmony — a guardian, not a saviour who departs.MB1:HoA:Ch 82
Relations
- foreshadowsVin — First time on the page that anyone wonders, aloud, whether Vin herself is being singled out for the Hero of Ages' role — she says it half-embarrassed to Sazed in his chambers. MB1:WoA:Ch 30
