Hammond
also known as Ham, Hammond
A muscular, soldierly Misting who burns pewter — a Thug. Runs security on jobs and likes to bait people into philosophy debates between fights. MB1:TFE:Ch 4
Known facts
- hidden-familyHam is married, and so is Yeden. Ham keeps his family well away from the work, in a city he has never told even Kelsier — his wife is a seamstress there and tells anyone who asks that he is a Luthadel Garrison soldier — because the Inquisitors, when they kill a Misting, hunt his children with him.MB1:TFE:Ch 22
- captain-of-elends-guardServes as captain of King Elend's guard in Luthadel — on the express condition that he never has to wear a uniform.MB1:WoA:Ch 1
- grew-up-in-luthadelOutside Granny Hilde's passwall Ham tells Elend he grew up in the city itself — with skaa parents and a noble grandfather, in the underground but with a family — and that he later used this same passwall to sneak his wife and children in and out when they came to visit him.MB1:WoA:Ch 42
- saves-sazed-from-marsh-with-a-dueling-caneHam arrives at the end of Sazed's losing fight against Marsh in Kredik Shaw and brings a dueling cane down on the back of the Inquisitor's head — one-armed and still in a sling. Marsh is downed, though not killed.MB1:WoA:Ch 58
- gets-too-attached-to-his-soldiersHam is the one member of Kelsier's crew who has not grown into the role Kelsier assigned him in his post-overthrow note. Kelsier left him to be the new government's general; Ham instead has to know each soldier he commands personally, and once he knows them he cannot help getting attached. Elend and Vin note the gap with affection — and use it to argue Ham back when he refuses to march the troops through mist casualties to Fadrex.MB1:HoA:Ch 15
Events
- MB1:TFE:Ch 4 First appearance; arrives with Breeze and signs on to the job.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 6 Arrives in the morning with his luggage; takes on training duty for the army.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 10 Has the perimeter, with Tineyes on the corners; tries to draw Vin into one of his "is overthrowing God good or evil" debates.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 10 Reports recruitment numbers — under two thousand at twelve weeks.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 11 Has the perimeter; reports the Ministry has cleared out and left the massacre as a sign.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 15 Hands Sazed the vial of pewter that starts Vin's body working again, then assists during the surgery and carries her up to her bed.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 21 Meets Kelsier at the bottom of the entry crack, walks him through the three guarded entrances and the sparring chamber, and quietly asks the question he has not been able to put down: are skaa actually different from noblemen? At the feast he watches the Bilg duel go wrong and is told, afterward, what Kelsier really did to the army with it.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 24 Back from the caves in a vest cut from his army uniform; trades the philosophy line about money with Dockson and accepts the morning Garrison visit with Vin as cover for his old contacts.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 24 Walks Vin to the Garrison gate and waves down Captain Sertes for sparring; instead is pulled aside and pressed for a real officer's commission, which he agrees to so that he can listen to the rest.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 25 Is sent back to the Garrison as a planted ear, and tells Kelsier up front that he will not raise a hand against the men marching beside him.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Back from the Garrison — sent home early to save them the wages — and reports that the Garrison will be out of the city for months chasing rebels.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 26 Confirms to Kelsier that the Garrison is down to about a tenth of its strength inside the city — and that the rest will likely be out of Luthadel for months.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 27 Given the job of hiding the two thousand surviving soldiers in small squads through the slums and doubling the count in the months before the strike.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 29 Reports the hidden squads of the surviving army are doing better than expected — the men who refused Yeden's march have made themselves the faithful core.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 31 Fetches Sazed's healer's bag and a cloak for Vin when she walks in covered in Shan Elariel's blood.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 Cross-legged on the cellar floor of the backup lair, dismissing the plan as compromised but unbothered by the dirt.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 Asks, dumbstruck, how a man destroys the Pits of Hathsin.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 Splits away from the rooftop and pushes through the skaa crowd to fetch one of the hidden rebel squads.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 33 Charges back into the crossroads at the head of a rebel squad to free the carts.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 34 Leads his squad of fifty up the line of carts, breaking locks and fighting off the imperial soldiers around the last cart to free Renoux's people.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 34 Finds Vin kneeling over Kelsier's body in the empty centre of the square, confirms the crewleader is dead, and drags her away as the Inquisitors begin the massacre.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 35 Comes up the rooftop ladder with the rest of the crew to watch torches kindle across the city.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 35 Reads Kelsier's orders alongside Dox — general of the new nation, tasked with the four armed houses left in the city.
- MB1:TFE:Ch 37 Comes in off the Keep Elariel assault with a sword broken at the hilt resting on his shoulder; goes looking for another.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 12 Argues mushrooms and shade-grown plants and animals to eat them, presses Elend on whether they really intend to assault Fadrex, and quietly raises an eyebrow at the prospect of using the koloss against humans.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 15 Outside the imperial tent at the head of the march; refuses, at first, to accept that Elend would knowingly march the army through mist casualties, and looks to Vin for support; loses the argument, and goes off to help a group of soldiers strike their tents, laughing with them.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 25 On the narrowboat prow with Elend as the convoy reaches the canal mouth below Fadrex — spots the cut troughs in the canyon approach, regrets that the canal behind them is choking shut with ash, and admits it feels like fate trying to strand them. In the night council in Elend's tent, takes the field-fortification and scouting orders, agrees with Cett's military read of Yomen's dispositions, and bristles at Cett's casual suggestion that they simply assassinate Yomen.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 30 Stands on the deck with Elend running the obvious objections, teases Vin for having grown up on him, sees them off, and immediately begins offering Cett philosophical puzzles he cannot escape.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 36 Brings Demoux in for the morning briefing and gives the daily report on training and morale. Hangs back long enough to confirm to Elend that the camp rumour — that the sickness was the Survivor punishing the unfaithful — has gotten loose, and that the men who fell sick longest are starting to be looked at sideways.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 37 On the cliff plateau with Elend and Vin, he sifts the charred remains of Yomen's siege engines and reconstructs what happened: trebuchets pre-positioned in the back caves of the plateau, almost certainly built for an assault on Luthadel before Elend's arrival made them better used on his koloss.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 40 In the command tent for the briefing, working out the mechanics aloud alongside Elend: that the Canton of Inquisition hunted skaa Mistings to keep itself in stock, and that the corpse in Marsh's old room had been not Marsh but the spike-donors. Names the third art aloud as well — a counterpart to Allomancy and Feruchemy that draws on someone else's body. Later brings the messenger Conrad in from the canal road.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 44 Tries to keep Elend from going back into the city, pointing out that only pewter is keeping him on his feet after blood loss.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 47 Arrives at the head of the army's Mistings to clean up the brawl, and stands with Elend and Demoux after as Elend decides the man who struck Demoux must be executed and that the mistfallen must be sent away.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 61 Meets Elend at the camp perimeter when he returns with the new koloss band, delivers the scout reports about Vin and the collapse of the Central Dominance, then carries the attack order to the troops.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 65 With Elend above the army, gives him the surprisingly unhedged answer that they should not attack; later runs the orders to abandon camp at speed and call retreat when Yomen's men suddenly charge.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 73 Holds the rocky line above Fadrex with Elend, asking him what to make of the mists overhead, until a messenger arrives reporting the koloss retreat.
- MB1:HoA:Ch 74 Down in the corridor with Cett when Elend gives him his last set of instructions before leaving Fadrex in search of Vin.
- MB1:HoA:Epilogue Climbs out of another hole, alive — last he knew he was in Fadrex — and meets his wife and child climbing out beside him, separated a day ago by hundreds of miles.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 1 Leans on the parapet beside Elend, counting the enemy army aloud.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 3 Reports that the dead assassins were Western nobles of Houses Gardre and Conrad — likely Cett's men, not Straff's.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 5 Comes by to fetch Vin for a sparring session and stays to witness her first burn of the new aluminum-copper alloy.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 6 Runs the sparring lesson, gets dropped by Vin's jumping sweep, and afterwards lectures Elend on why small Allomancers can hit so much harder than their mass should allow.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 10 Sits beside Vin at the back of the stage in shirtless vest as Elend's senior bodyguard, scans the crowd alongside her, and trades civic-duty banter with her in whispers.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 11 Arrives late from organising the city guard and falls straight back into needling Breeze about his absence.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 13 Plays stones with Spook while the meeting waits for Elend; explains the siege calculus, then signs off on Elend's plan once Breeze does.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 14 Sticks his head back in the door as soon as Tindwyl opens it, notices the discarded bonds without comment, and is asked to see her to guest quarters as a friend of Sazed's.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 20 Frets after Elend's safety, makes jokes about meeting the father, and leaves to see to camp security once the meeting ends.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 21 Stands dumbfounded beside Elend in the atrium watching Breeze get hugged by Allrianne, admits he had only joked about the Cett-daughter rumour and never thought he was right, then bursts into the laughter that finally cracks the room.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 22 Leaves Keep Venture alone to walk his guard posts in the mists, flares pewter when OreSeur bays at him from the boxes, then pauses with Vin to walk her through what Thug lore knows about killing a Mistborn burning atium.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 23 Already up before the briefing, contributes the southern soldiers' account of koloss going rogue at the Lord Ruler's death and the lore that two armies in proximity might be enough to scare Jastes off; bickers with Breeze about whether he is a philosopher.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 26 Argues to ride along to Straff's camp as Elend's coachman, lets the point go when Elend insists on going in alone with Vin, and obligingly drops the nickname "El" at Elend's request.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 27 Meets the carriage in Tin Gate's courtyard with a lantern, openly impressed that Elend threatened his father in his own camp, and climbs into the carriage with him for the ride back to the keep.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 28 Relaxed across from Breeze in the study, half-jokes about having Vin simply make the suspected behind-the-scenes Assemblyman disappear, and keeps the meeting from sliding into hostility.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 31 Sits beside Vin in the audience and quietly checks how she is taking Elend's public association of her with the Survivor.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 32 Sits beside Vin and Breeze through Cett's pitch and joins them on the dais afterward to push Elend for a new plan.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 33 Stands with Elend at the poisoned well and dispatches twenty palace guards to help the skaa healers move their sick into an empty noble mansion.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 34 Sits on the floor with a stack of books and floats theories rather than studying any particular volume; reminds Elend he had once advocated selling the city to one of the armies in exchange for protection from the other.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Fully armed as Elend's personal bodyguard for the Cett dinner, needles Breeze for ducking the trip and travels with the escort to Keep Hasting.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 35 Stations his ten-man honour guard at the entries and stands in earshot of Elend through the Cett dinner.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 36 Accompanies Elend into the warehouse and out again; Breeze privately Soothes him less argumentative for the visit.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 37 Joins Elend on the wall in his usual vest and sandals, names the difference between befriending soldiers and leading them, and walks the parapet with him until Elend stops and says he has an idea.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Sits in the audience with a group of skaa including Demoux and a Survivor priest, waiting to spring Elend's announcement; once the assassins charge, he and Demoux are pinned in the crowd and cannot see the stage.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Sits with Elend in the empty benches, reports Vin will live, gives him the Mistborn-versus-the-room arithmetic — a Thug can take ten men, a Mistborn is an army — and rides on with him to Penrod's mansion when the summons comes.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 38 Stays at Elend's side through the rescheduled vote and walks out with him when the Assembly seats Penrod.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 42 Strolls into the keep landing in his Thug's sleeveless winter habit, finds the sparring grounds deserted because his men are all working for Elend, and trades a wry little argument with him about whether his vest is a uniform.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 42 Leads Elend to Granny Hilde's passwall — one he has known since boyhood and once used to sneak his wife and children in and out of Luthadel — sees him off outside the wall, and admits, when asked, that he grew up in this city himself.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 44 Looks worn out in Elend's study, pours himself a drink, and presses Elend hard on whether Vin is still stable — citing his own observation that her recovery from the Thug's full blow was too quick even for pewter to explain.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 46 Pushes back the hardest at the suggestion that they simply hand Luthadel over; mentions, almost in passing, that he has already sent his family to ground.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 49 Stands on the wall watching the riders go and wondering aloud where the column of smoke from the koloss camp is coming from; tries Kell as the answer to Clubs's argument.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 51 On the wall as the drums roll; assigned with Breeze to Pewter Gate and Zinc Gate.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 53 Bloodied arm in a sling — saved by pewter — he kneels beside Breeze in the abandoned skaa hovel and tries to rouse him enough to walk to Keep Hasting.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 54 Sits dazed and bloodied beside Sazed at Keep Hasting's gates, arm in a sling — a man without pewter would have died from the wound by now — and whispers that they have to go.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 54 Shakes himself out of his stupor in time to toss Vin the last vial of pewter he has.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Joins Elend in the street with his arm in a sling, trying to explain to him how Vin retook the city after he himself was knocked out at Keep Hasting.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 57 Walks down the hidden cavern stairs after Spook; his good arm still works well enough to keep pace.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Arrives at the last moment with his arm still in a sling and brings a dueling cane down on the back of the Inquisitor's head.
- MB1:WoA:Ch 58 Helps Sazed to his feet after the Marsh fight and calls after him as he hurries down the stairs.
